Well, I would think the sports writers would have something to say about Tim Thomas as well through this point of the season.
However, goalies have been known to go on losing streaks as well. Just as easily as Halak or Thomas are 7-1 or 8-0 or whatever, they could pull a Leaf move and win just 1 out of 9.
I do not do this often so enjoy it, I was wrong about Halak. He is played better than I thought he would and does look like the real deal.
However, I am still not sold on the Blues!! |

if Halak keeps playing like this, the Blues could be contenders for their entire division, never mind just making the playoffs... I'm pretty sure no one would have predicted that in September.
However, its just too early to be going on about Vezina trophy winners. Too much season to play yet. |

I'm a Bruins fan so I'd pick Thomas over Halak.
But to be fair, Thomas has more experience, plays on a better team, and more importantly I think he'll have a better year.
Go Bruins!!!
There was once a license plate in Toronto that abbreviated "Go Leafs" it read "Golfs". |

Utemins Current 2011 Vezina
Nominees Halak: StLouis' major improvement is made by this guy. Howard: Really good sv% wins and GAA Luongo: Consistency, Wins, Big Saves
Current leader for me is Howard.

While it's def far too early to pick a Vezina winner, my current list wouldn't include Luongo! Halak, for sure, Thomas more than likely and prob J. Quick? Luongo's getting wins, but his play has been anything but Vezina worthy! Consistent, yes, but that'd be consistently uneven |

It's still very early. STL is playing well over their head defensively. I mean, only Boston is reasonably close in regards to goals against per game which is saying a ton.
But the team is not that brilliant offensively to this point. 23rd in the league with 2.5 Goals per game and a killer 11.2% on the PP.
This team still has something to prove offensively and they are really on injury away from medicrity. Halak goes down and so does the house of cards.
However, they could be one of the biggest surprises and teams to prove me wrong. Possibly of all time. |

Well, it is early, and the Blues are on quite a roll . . . but still, Halak has continued his play from last year without missing a beat. He is looking more and more like the real deal.
For me, the defensive soundness and depth of Boston take away from Thomas' start, especially considering the year that Rask (a mediocre goalie IMHO) just had.
The Blues don't have good defensive depth, and they have trouble scoring, so for me, Halak wins this easily so far. He'd be my pick right now, but it's real early.

It is too early to pick Vezina winner but the topic is up. Luongo is up because his october and start of november always suck but he is playing decent. I have no faith in Tim Thomas I believe he will go off track, and Quick has never had sucess I don't expect it now. Maybe Anderson over Luongo?

Utemin, what is your hate-on with Quick all about?
If you're talking early Vezina trophy candidates, Quick is right up there: 8-1-1, 1 SO, with a 1.64 GAA and a .942 SV%. Tied for first in wins, 4th in GAA and SV% (for goalies with more than 4 games played).
He is currently well ahead of 2 of your 3 nominees... |

Exactly what i was about to say. Utemin, how can you possibly vote for someone because "they usually have a bad start"? That makes little to no sense! FTR, look up goalie stats and you'll see that there are more than a couple of goalies who would be more deserving than Luongo for the Vezina if for some crazy reason you had to pick now! Here, lemme help you....
Neuvirth, Lundqvist, Price, Howard, Nittymaki, Bobrovsky, Backstrom, Quick, Johnson, Halak and Thomas, ALL have more wins, a better GAA AND a better save %!!!! There are others who lead Luongo in 2 of the 3 categories as well. I'm a fan of Luongo, but in no way do i think he'd win a Vezina with his current numbers!!!
Even worse, you ask who might be in the running, i suggest Quick and you say because he's never had much success that you wouldn't pick him??? Wow....... interesting. Glad you don't vote on awards. |

I was going to mention Price last post, but my Leafs reflex kicked in and I didn't say anything about his strong play. But, despite the pressure, he has been playing very, very well . . . good enough, I think, to drown out the great start of Halak even, which is quite an accomplishment.
I just think at the first hint of a mini-slump, it'll all fall apart for Price, but who knows. Maybe he is the next Patrick Roy
The other guy who has had a real strong comeback season so far is Backstrom in Minny. He has played very well, and is making that Wild team look very competetive, for a defence that does give up its fair share of quality chances.

It's a little early in the season to be calling a Vezina winner.
But Halak is doing great! |

Finally! A Detroit goalie who is getting some credit and not being discredited for his team's defensive play. I agree Howard is good and is the future for Detroit, but I don't know why people have knoced Osgood so much yet regard Howard so highlly. They have played for pretty much the same team. |

Utemin, how can you say anything like what you said about Quick When he only played 44 games first season going 21-18-2 with four shoutouts and his second season (first as starter) he goes 39-24-7 with four shutouts. showing success the kings, got into the playoffs and are now becoming one of the better teams in the nhl, he is one of the reasons, Luongo on the other hand took till getting to vancouver to post a winning record. plus only posted 12 wins in his second season where he played 47 games. so really you have nothing to stand on. |
