Caught this article in Canoe this morning: http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Edmonton/2010/12/01/16387051.html. I have to say I'm a bit surprised that things have escalated to this level, have things really gotten this bad in EDM with the new stadium that they would consider moving?

Now, I would assume the biggest piece of this is to posture the City of Edmonton to start making things happen because they have been dragging their heels for a long time on this new arena thing. Considering it was first discussed in 2007, it's about time something is done about it. However, the threat is not going to make D-Katz a very popular man in this town.

Ultimately, it's a threat for now and should be treated as such. I think it would be difficult for the NHL to move a team that sells out every night. Edmonton is a pretty old barn, however as long as there are things moving, regardless how quickly, than there is no reason to move the team.

Just a little bit if a kick in the junk to get the ball rolling in City Council. Now that the 2017 Expo is off the table I can see the COE getting more agressive into this arena project. It's not like the council disagrees that it needs to be done, they are just being overly cautious of where the money is going to come from.

I think Edmonton is fine for its fan base but the problem is the players don't like the city. Financially this would be a mistake by the NHL.
Even if Edmonton is currently low on fans they can easily gain them back with there young guns.

This is not the first meeting where folks from Edmonton and Quebec City have sat down to discuss their futures. They are both in the same situation in that both need new buildings to be successful and both need Federal and Provicial cash to make it happen. Quebec got their provincial money so the Edmonton group wants to know how.

It's also not a surprise to see the Edmonton group in Quebec. The Oilers play Montreal in a matter of hours. Furthermore, Katz isn't there. It's the same group that met with a group from Hamilton this past summer.

It's a fact finding mission. But if the media stirs the pot a little and gets the Edmonton City Council moving it won't be a bad thing for the Oilers.

Listen, Daryl Katz is born and raised in Edmonton. He still lives here! Who, in their right mind as a billionaire, is going to live in Edmonton?? I mean, I love this city more than most and if I had the cash I would not live here, specifically in the winter.

I am not saying that the Oilers will never move under Katz as he is still a business man. However, it will be the absolute last resort.

As I said, it's a meeting between a few groups that happened in the past and Kevin Lowe dropped a little morsel of a headline grabber in, "The sky is the limit," and the media ran with it like a fat kid on a twinkie. Everyone ignored the "Exchanging ideas is the main goal of the meeting,” statement.

The sheep will keep coming to the feeding trough. Here is a story regarding the exact same meeting that has a completely different theme and impact. Isn't it amazing how the media can make things look how ever they want by the headline??? The 2nd is a story including a release from the Katz group.

Remember, my independent thinking friends, there are always 3 sides to every media story. One side, the other side, and the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Very accurate and astute comments Beans! Not much to add – I couldn't agree more, especially with your observations about the media! (And people who believe every word or direction the media takes.)

With regard to Utemin's comments that "players don't like the city," that's not completely accurate. A few players have vocalized their dislike for Edmonton (that they wouldn't want to play there), but there are many examples of players who enjoy playing and living in Edmonton – a city where hockey matters.

As for comments about Edmonton's fan-base, despite their poor record, the team has sold out every game for the past four hockey seasons. Trust me, Edmonton does not have a problem with filling seats, and I suspect most NHL players like playing in a rink that's full, and one with knowledgeable and enthusiastic fans.

Admittedly, some players (given the choice) would not select Edmonton as their first choice of places to play (Hockey News has already taken a player's poll on this topic), but for most young millionaire hockey players, they are not going to complain about where they play hockey, and most players who have played (or play) in Edmonton would relate very positive experiences from playing (and living) in this city.

so this rumour was apparently put to bed by Oilers management as a big misunderstanding. Case closed!

Sorry Pal, I would have love to make the bet. However, I became a new Uncle today and sometimes (very very rarely) life gets in the way of hockey.

Looks like I missed a good game for the Oiler fan.

Proof??? Everything I read said it was Kevin Lowe, Patrick Laforge(Pres of the Oilers), and a guy named Paul Marcaccio who is the CFO for the Katz Group.

Batman was not there. He was too busy saving Gothem from the Joker.
