Last night the Canucks outshot the Oil 32-12 in a lopsided-in-every-way-but-the-score game. The Canucks played one of their best games of the year (Dubnyk was stellar in net, otherwise it would have been a rout - Burrows could have had 4 goals all on his own, Kes and Hank each clanged one off the post) offensively, but defensively, they only allowed 12 shots on net. Only 1 in the 3rd period. I don't see a lot of Oiler games, but I can't imagine it was one of their best showings.

Is that the lowest shot total this season so far in the NHL for shots by a team in a single game? Or even in the last couple of years? I did some searching but cannot find an answer.

That is crazy low, but I personally hate the way they count the shots on goal stat. For instance, hitting the goal post does not count as a shot on goal, and yet every time the goalie snags a shot directed his way it counts as one (I think, not positive), and some of those would never have hit the net.

But yeah, 12 is pretty bad . . . I know the Leafs had a game this year with 18 or 19, but no other game comes to mind with anything below 15.

there was some speculation from the commentators last night that the scorekeepers were being unfair to EDM, and that some shots that were not counted should have been. But hey, its the official count.

The shot count was deserved. Although I agree that shots on goal is one of the most subjective measurements in hockey, the Oilers offensive push last night was weak. Too much pass when shots should happen.

And no, I don't recall anything less than 15 this year either.

Hopefully a bump in the road as the Oilers are 5-1-1 in their last 7. Soon to be 6-1-1 after another huge thumping of the Leafs tomorrow night!!

Anyone else notice how well the Oilers are playing.........Without Alex Hemsky???

Yes. Very different team from last year when Hemsky went down, this year he does not seem to be the offensive focus, and has not been as missed. Traded before the deadline do you think?

The canucks beat the oilers with there size.

The canucks didn't get that many scoring chances btw, but compared to the oilers they got alot

Go OILERS Go!!!

I saw an awful lot of chances for the Canucks last night, and good ones too. Like I said, Dubnyk played a very strong game, he could not be faulted on either of the Canuck goals scored, they were unstoppable IMO. 4 separate very good saves on Burrows, and 2 posts, and thats just what I recall off the top of my head.

still not a bad as the 6 shots the Leafs had in a playoff elimination game against the Devils about 8 or so years back. now THAT was ridiculous!

Have to say, if that was one of the best games of the year for the Canucks, then I think that fans better start looking for the playoffs scapegoat now.

I watched most of the game, and was wholly unimpressed by the Oilers, as they were dominated in every category by Canucks. But seriously, Nuxfan, you must have written these comments with your green/blue glasses on, with your monitor tinted the same colours.

I highly doubt this was one of the Canucks best games! Had they really poured the pressure on, Dubnyk and the Oil would have cracked.

Come on! The Oilers were playing with only 5 DMEN- Vandermeer was injured after playing only 1 and a half minutes, so two shifts?

As mentioned Hemsky, their best player was missing.

Horcoff, their captain, and best faceoff man was also missing.

I saw two plays that were almost own goals, bouncing from off Canucks defensemen in front - no doubt the hardest and best saves of the night by Luongo.

Then the Canucks let one in on the PP in the final minute.

Canucks had a good, solid game, but I think it had more with the Oilers being the Oilers than the Canucks having one of the best outings of their year.

Just checked the ESPN boxscore for the faceoff stats for that game:

Oilers won 23 faceoffs, the Canucks won 32 faceoffs. That means that the Canucks won about 58% of the Faceoffs. Was kind of surprised, thought that it would have been more lopsided, but nonetheless, Canucks were at nearly 60% winning in faceoffs.

A note, Dustin Penner, who won 5/9(about 55%) faceoffs, was the only Oiler to win more than 50%, in fact the closest was 40% in faceoffs.

On the other hand, the Canucks, of players that took faceoffs in the game, only Kesler was below 50%, at 30% and 4/13. All other Canucks were above 50% in faceoffs.

polish - the Canucks have really been either very on or very off this year, so it was nice to see a complete effort all around. This game was definately one of the top 10 games they've played this year, although certainly not the best. Luongo looked sharp - even on the nearly own goals, and really with Alberts on your team Luongo is sort of expecting that - defense looked quick and mobile, Sedins were sic, second line was popping.

The Canucks have been doing that in the faceoff circle all year long. Malhotra, Kesler, and Hank are all in the top 20 faceoff % so far this season. Its a refreshing change. Malhotra was 14/19 in the circle for that game.

I saw a game, a number of years ago, where NJ was in town. Can't remember for sure, but the Canucks only reg'd 8 shots or something ridiculous like that? Funny, if i recall correctly, they only lost 2-1!
