I don't know if it's a record or not, but the NHL is raking in a lot of money with the number of suspended players this season. Not including Matt Cooke (who looks to be suspended around the time of this writing), there have been 32 suspensions this NHL season, totalling 107 games in suspensions.

And it's not just the Matt Cookes and Trevor Gillies who are getting suspended. There are some star players on the list of suspended players this NHL season, including:

Michael Cammalleri: 1 game
Dany Heatley: 2 games
Joe Thornton: 2 games
Shane Doan: 3 games
Olli Jokinen: 3 games
Zdeno Chara: 0 games (I guess that one doesn't count.)

Based on an average NHL salary of $2.4 million, the league has collected over $3 million is suspension revenues this hockey season. One would think this would motivate the league to dole out more suspensions (and for longer terms), but the league does not benefit by the suspension dollars.

The money (including money generated by fines) is donated to the NHL Players' Emergency Assistance Fund, which helps financially strapped former players.

I'm not sure if such former players are cheering for guys like Cooke to play the way they do, but every time someone gets suspended, an impoverished former NHLer (sounds like an oxymoron) stands to gain by each and every transgression!

Hmmmm I wonder if after all the "old-timers" have passed on and only players from the big $$ eras are alive, will the money still go towards the Player's Emergency Assistance Fund? Seems to me that since the late 80's most NHL players should be able to fund their own emergencies?
