It looks like Daniel Sedin will win the Art Ross Trophy this season, and in doing so, this will be the ninth year in a row with a different scoring champion! (By scoring, I mean points.)
Here's the list of most recent winners, who have won the Art Ross Trophy the past eight hockey seasons: H. Sedin, Malkin, Ovechkin, Crosby, Thornton, St. Louis, Forsberg and Iginla. And while Daniel Sedin looks to win the scoring title this season, it's very unlikely that he will do so again next year. (He's probably only got a 50% chance of beating his brother to name one player.)
Are scoring champion dynasties gone just like Stanley Cup dynasties? Is there more parity in top-end talent? Will we ever see a Gretzky or Lemieux again (or even a Jagr) – a player who wins the scoring championship by dozens of points, and repeats as the top player in points for multiple seasons?
In the 21 hockey seasons preceding Iginla's Hart win in 2001-02 (from 1980-81 - 2000-01), there were only three different scoring champions:
Gretzky: 10 Art Ross Trophies Lemieux: 6 Art Ross Trophies Jagr: 5 Art Ross Trophies
Crosby is the most likely player to become a repeat winner, but the way he plays the game affects his ability to play a full hockey season. After that, you have the Sedins, Ovechkin and Stamkos as the most prolific producers of points. (The latter two who have not yet hit their prime.) And to round things out with players who have not yet hit their prime, you have Perry and Getlaf from the Ducks and Toews and Kane from the Hawks. I'm sure that I'm missing a few other players, which means that it's unlikely we will see someone win the Art Ross 3 or 4 years in a row, or even 3 or 4 times in the next 10 seasons.

There may not be any 3 or 4 year in a row type guys, but i wouldn't be surprised to see Crosby win a few more, say 4 in the next 10 years? I'd say he's as close as you're gonna get to a guy who might win 3 in a row, but it's obviously his health that would have to improve. Of course, by health, i'm talking injuries. He's had his share, but some are fluke, like his most recent one. You can't really blame him for that one or blame it on his style of play. |
