At this time of year, I would rather talk about what takes place on the ice, and not what takes place off the ice.
For far too many years, there has been discussion on how Montreal fans (not all of them to be fair) have booed the US anthem, in particular, during the playoffs. This appeared to have begun just after US invaded Iraq, but it has continued for 10 years. In 2004, it happened when the Bruins met the Habs in the playoffs. How did the Bruins fans respond? They gave the Canadian anthem a standing ovation. Good for them, and shame on the Habs fans who booed the US anthem.
During the 2009 playoffs, Bob Gainey admonished the fans who once again booed the US anthem in the playoffs, urging them to show more respect.
During last year's playoffs, a video message from Jean Beliveau was shown prior to a playoff game against the Washington Capitals asking the fans to show some respect for the American anthem, but the booing happened again when the Habs played the Penguins.
Just prior to tonight's game, the PA announcer delivered a lengthy message in both official languages asking fans to respect the singing of the US anthem. To help make the point, the announcer named all seven members of the Canadiens lineup who were born in the states. There was subsequently no booing of the American anthem.
Let's hope this continues for the balance of the playoffs, for which I hope Les Habitants
have a successful run for the cup. (Despite the behaviour of far too many fans who
show no class.) Hey if you want to boo - save it for Chara if you want, but let's keep politics
out of hockey!

The only thing sadder than booing an anthem, is knowing you need to remind your fans to please not boo the anthem....
Reminds me of when I was in Germany for world cup in 2006 - before every match they had a big racism thing, telling everyone to respect other races, racism has no part in the game. As a Canadian, its pretty surprising to see. |

Interesting, Guest . . . I didn't know that they announced the american player names to fans, that's kind of funny, actually.
Don't get me wrong, I do think it's classless to boo an anthem, especially since it's the common folk who get offended, and certainly not the leaders of the country that you might be booing.
But I just wanted to make a point: you say for fans not to "make it political", when in fact, the whole reason for having an anthem in a hockey game is . . . what exactly? Anthems ARE political, you cannot get around it. An anthem and the flag are the two biggest symbols of a country, a political designation. So, one can argue that politics already IS involved. And, many rinks have some ceremonies before the game, in the middle of the intermission, with some soldiers or whatever as well . . . they do inject enough politics in there themselves.
So, while I am for not booing the anthem, I am also for the elimination of all that other political stuff as well. To me, hockey has nothing to do with any of it.

Don't want to make a big deal out of this,because it certainly shouldn't become one, but I feel the country of origin of the home team should be the only anthem played prior to the game. If you go to the states to watch two american teams play the canadian anthem will not be played yet 3/4's of the players on either team are of Canadian decent. As Slozo, said this is completely politics & the belief behind it that you do not want to insult the american team coming to Canada & vice versa yet have no concern of insulting all the europeans in the league.
If the anthem is deemed necessary and the game is in either Canada or the US then that should be a moment for the fans of that particular country to take pride in that country's anthem, get pumped up for the game & nothing else.
Yes the booing is classless, but your always going to have a group of knuclehead's ruin it for everyone else unfortunately.

But why do most of those "knuckleheads" reside in Quebec? (And this coming from a Habs fan who's married to a francophone.) I've never heard of this happening (at least this to extent) where fans in other Canadian cities boo the US anthem.
If I were at a game and fans were booing someone's national anthem, they would be told to be quiet, or ferme la bouche!
But that's enough said (at least from me) about a subject matter which really has little to do with the game of hockey! |
