It's been stated many times that winning the President's Trophy does not guarantee success in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and it's been pointed out that there are a number of examples where the league leader in points has been knocked off in the first round.
But if you go back 10 years, 15 years or 24 years, the President's Trophy winner has won the Stanley Cup approximately 30% of the time! Finishing 2nd overall, 3rd overall or 16th overall – the results are less, and in some cases, much less!
A lot of fans think 30% is a small percentage, but I disagree. There is more parity in the game today, and the difference between teams finishing 1st and 8th in their conference is oftentimes not that significant.
For example, in the East this year, Washington finished the season with 48 wins, only 4 more wins than the Rangers. The span in win totals for the Eastern Conference is only 6 wins. (High of 49 wins and low of 43 wins.)
In the Western Conference, the span is a bit more, but if you take out Vancouver's 54 wins, the range in wins goes from 43-48, a difference of only 5 wins.
But here's the greater point. All teams being equal (I know they're not), the odds of winning the Stanley Cup are 1 in 16, or 6.25%.
So if the President's Trophy winner has won the Stanley Cup 30% of the time, this means they have increased the usual (or average) odds of winning the Stanley Cup by 5X! This is a significant number!!
And that's why I don't believe this whole notion about how winning the President's Trophy does not guarantee Stanley Cup success. There are no guarantees, but to finish first place overall in the regular season does increase your odds in a significant fashion.
I mean really – do people actually think the league leader in points (in a very competitive NHL) should win the Stanley Cup 50% of the time or more?!?

4178.....You know, when you go to a post you've made, there's an EDIT button at the top, right near the "reply with quote", "email poster", etc. These are right beside the date and time of your post and the edit one has what looks like a piece of paper and a pencil. Click on that (only on your own posts) and it allows you to edit your post rather than cut and paste it to make corrections.
As for your comments, i agree. The President's trophy winner SHOULD have playoff success. Not necessarily be the cup winner any specific % of the time, but should make it through a few rounds. When you consider how close in points a lot of teams end up, it wouldn't ever shock me to see a Presidents Trophy winner lose after round 1. BUT, round 1 "should" be a given. If a PT winner loses round 1, it's either due to a ton of injuries or more likely, not playing up to their capabilities which could also be called a CHOKE!
Time for this years PT winner to get their heads outta their a**es and start playing like they can!!! |

I believe there are some seasons where the PT winners used up everything they had in the tank in order to finish first overall, thus leaving themselves on fumes for the playoffs. |

You're missing the point Pickles. The record shows that winners of the PT actually go on to win the cup way more than teams finishing anywhere else in the regular season standings. |
