New York Rangers forward Derek Boogaard has died.
Minneapolis Star Trbune's Michael Russo first reported the news on Twitter Friday evening, saying the 28-year-old was found dead in his apartment by his family.
"Derek was an extremely kind and caring individual," Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather said in a release. "He was a very thoughtful person, who will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time."
Boogaard began his NHL career with Minnesota and appeared in 255 career games with the Wild from 2005-06 and 2009-10. He joined the Rangers on July 1, 2010, appearing in 22 games in the 2010-11 season.
Throughout his career, Boogaard sought to make a difference in the communities he played in, taking part in numerous charitable endeavors. Boogaard was a supporter of the Defending the Blue Line Foundation, a non-profit charitable foundation whose mission is to ensure that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the great sport of hockey. While with the Rangers, he created "Boogaard's Booguardians," hosting military members and their families at all New York Ranger home games.
In addition, he made multiple appearances with partner organizations of the Garden of Dreams Foundation, the non-profit charity that works closely with all areas of Madison Square Garden, including the New York Knicks, Rangers, Liberty, MSG Media, MSG Entertainment and Fuse "to make dreams come true for kids facing obstacles."
The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native was originally Minnesota's seventh round choice, 202nd overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft

news like this is always stunning, especially when its 28 year old athletes. That is 2 deaths in the NYR organization in the last few years too.
I wonder if we'll hear what the cause of death was. Certainly when you're 6'7 and 265 lbs, you immediately think of heart failure or steroids...accident or suicide perhaps. |

It's very unfortunate. From what I've heard Derek was very kind and charitable, if anybody in the Rangers organization had to go it shoulda been this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ec_2oKWe2Gw I don't have anything against him personnaly, but it shouldn't have been Derek Boogard dying.

FutureKesler, sometimes a joke isn't a joke and wishing anything of this sort on anyone, doesn't sound funny no matter who it is. I am not crapping on you, just ensuring that you understand the lines of good taste.
I used Boogaard a few times as a reference to what I thought of what the enforcer postion had become, in a negative way, but what I never mentioned was that I had the pleasure of meeting him once, as I am friends with the Harding(Josh) family, and he was indeed a gentleman.
He will be sorely missed for many reasons, much more important than hockey. |

The boogyman was one of the most feared men on the ice. When he was on the ice very few liberties were taken against his teammates. Love his game or hate it, this is a tragedy. Very very sad! |

Futurekesler.....Not even sure you were joking about the Avery thing, but to say something like that is just sick and classless. Give yer head a shake.
Another tragedy really. Funny thing is, i never really knew much about the guy until now. Just saw him as a hockey goon and not the kind and caring human being that it turns out he was.
Really sad, my heart goes out to his family, friends and teammates. |

Bizarre news indeed, but it seems like this is happening more and more among all professional athletes . . . and I can speculate on several things, but who knows if we will actually hear the truth.
I totally agree with Fat Elvis, nicely said.
I truly wonder though, knowing that Derek had been out a good part of the year with a concussion, whether his death was partially related in some way.

It's alarming that at 28 yr old athlete is found dead. Normally, these guys are the cream of the crop in a physical sense. 28 yr olds in peak physical condition do not just die. This is where the spectulation comes in of drugs, steroids, suicide, etc.
Regardless of how it happened, it's sad news and no one like to hear these kinds of things. If something comes out that his death was something viewed as a poor lifestyle choice hopefully Boogaard can be remembered as the charitable person he was. |

A couple of tweets from Larry Brooks about Boogaard.
NYP_Brooksie Larry Brooks Post has learned that Derek Boogaard was receiving counseling through NHL/NHLPA Behavorial Health/Substance Abuse Program at time of death.
NYP_Brooksie Larry Brooks Story that will appear in Sunday's editions will be posted on NYPost.com....No inferences should be drawn as to cause of death. |

I heard his family immediatly donated his brain to the scientific concussion research place, so that leads me to belive suicide. Condolences to his family/friends and FutureKesler, thats not a joking matter at this time.

His family were simply honoring Dereks wishes. He was asked by researchers in the wake of the Bob Probert study & Derek agreed to donate his brain as well when he passed. |

He passed sadly, due to mixing alcohol with oxycodone.
And, apparently struggled with addiction to Oxycodone.

Sad when this happens, death caused by mixture of alcohol and drugs.
Is this only the second time that something like this has happened in the NHL? I know it happened to Kordic.
