My goodness, its like 11am EST, I figured when I checked in this morning we'd have at least 3 threads regarding the Schenn signing .

A very good signing for TOR, Schenn is a great stay-at-home defenseman, and I don't think they overpaid for his skills.

i'm betting that going into year 3 of his contract he's gonna be proving to everyone that he was signed at a very very good price.
good job Burkie! and good on Schenn for not being greedy!

Defensive players (regardless of being forwards or defensemen) never get as high a salary as offensive players. Even 2 way players often get less than their offensively focused counterparts. In the case of Schenn, I think this is a sound value for both player and team. I was listening to an interview with Greg Whatever(PuckDaddy) who was saying the litmus test for the Schenn deal would be the Marc Staal deal from last season. Both are comparable and now both have comparable contracts.

I love Schenn, he's really young and he was first in hit for a defenseman last season. He's also very strong.

He does have a lot of room for improvement, like giveaways. He's not good with the puck yet and he was one of the worst for giveaways last season.

I think it's a good signing and I'm glad it's for 5 seasons.

I don't think a stay at home defense should get paid more then 4 millions, because they are usually a second or third pairing and a team can't afford to have 4 or 5 defense with more then 4 millions each.

Very solid signing with not too much risk, agreed.

3 il would have been better, but for 5 years, may be a real cheap deal at the end of it.

Looking forward to seeing this kid play in the second season

if i recall he did have 20 some points last year wwhich is very respectable for a stay at home defender and he is young enough a couple seasons at 30 plus points is not out of the question,, no very sound value indeed for this young man,, i think any team in the league would take him for 5 years on this contract

Yeah, I wouldn't pigeon-hole Schenn into calling him a "stay-at-home" guy per se . . . you can't be stay at home, lead all d-men in hits, and still put up 20 pts really. I'd say he's our "gritty" responsible d-man . . . he may never be our best defensive defenceman (although there is time to grow into that) but he will certainly be the most feared when coming over the blueline, even moreso than Phaneuf. And I like that, it's a solid role and he is a very important player on this Leafs team.

And on a continually improving offence, he could get as much as 30-40 pts, although less pp time (additions of Liles and Franson) means that 25 is probably the very high end for him at this time, which isn't too shabby for a guy in his role.
