Mike Modano announced on his facebook page sooner today that he calls it career after a prolific 20 years in the NHL

he scored 561 goals and had 1374 points in just under 1500 games (1499)

From nhl.com:

"After a long summer of thinking about my future, I've come to the decision that it's time to retire as a player from the NHL," Modano wrote on his Facebook page, a link to which he also posted to his Twitter account. "There's way too many people to thank here at this time and too much to say, so I have a press conference scheduled for early Friday afternoon. Check back Friday late afternoon for more. What a great ride it's been!"

joe is a god, if u dont agree....i dont care

Heard on the radio today that the Canucks invited him to camp, but he turned it down. Not much left in the tank i suppose. Either way, great career, and if i'm not mistaken, he retires as the highest scoring US player in history.

as the highest scoring American-born player with those point totals, he will definitely be a lock to the HOF.

21 NHL seasons!! Was it really that long ago that I got to watch him run roughshod over my hometown Regina Pats, as a Prince Albert Raider???

Man, I am getting old!!

Another saddish day for my generation of hockey fan, as another of our stars, hangs em' up.

Hall of Fame, next stop!

I'm feeling that FER. We're getting up there. He had a hell of a career...man that guy could skate!!

But, I'm glad he hung them up, I couldn't stand watching him as a 'role player' over the last few years. He was better than a point-a-game player for the first 3/4 of his NHL career, and very respectable in the final 1/4. He put up some great numbers considering he played half his career in a defensive system. But a guy like Modano is an eagle and needs to soar, you can't cage him and in the final years that's what happened.

I heard that the Stars gave him a 1 day honorary contract so his career is actually 22 seasons.

Kind of a neat move by the Stars, allowing him to retire as a Dallas Star.

The last of the Minnesota North Stars, and certainly, one of if not the brightest of them. Always a class act on and off the ice too.

A great career to be proud of.

FER, i feel ya on the age thing! That draft back in '88 was Modano, followed by Linden by the Canucks. Obviously Modano turned out to be the better player, but Linden did become a pretty good Canuck for many years!

Ironically, the next 5 picks were far from "impact" players, but at picks 8, 9 and 10 we saw Jeremy Roenick, Rod Brind'Amour and Teemu Selanne picked by Chicago, St. Louis and Winnipeg respectively! Curtis Leschyshyn and Marty Gelinas were 2nd and 7th and had decent careers, but a few teams certainly missed out on some darn good talent with those 3!

Mike Modano and the Dallas Stars were the bane of the Oilers in the late 90's. Believe it or not, the Oilers made the playoffs in 6 of 7 seasons between 96-97 and 02-03. In those 7 playoffs seasons, the Oilers played the Stars every time, winning on a 7-game sqeeker in 96. 4 our of 5 seasons the Oilers played the Stars in the first round and lost every time. A big part of that was Mike Modano.

The Oiler fan me hates him, but the hockey fan in me has seen few players that could skate as well and punish a team on the scoreboard more convincingly than Mike Modano. Great, great player.

One of the very few players that I have seen who I would pay money just to watch skate. How did he get that jersey to flap like a flag like that as he skated?
