Was listening to the radio today and they were discussing the whole 50 goals in 50 games and how the NHL only recognizes it for the first 50 games of a teams season. Aside from the 5 who've done what the NHL considers 50 in 50, there are 3 players who've scored 50 in "their" first 50 games, not the teams first 50.

Can you name them (without googling it)?

I know for sure that Cam Neely is one of them. Not sure on the other 2. A few guesses would be maybe Teemu Selanne, Alex Mogilny or Phil Esposito during their 76 goal campaigns.

How about players who have scored 50 goals in the last 50 games of the season?

Does anyone keep track of that?

A player who scores 50 (or more) goals from games 33-82 accomplishes at least the same thing as a player who scores the same number of goals from games 1-50.

And while the value of a game is the same whether it's the 1st game or 82nd game, one could make the argument that there's more on the line with late season games than early season games.

Ryan.....Neely is correct. So too is Mogilny.

4306 - not sure if anyone keeps that kind of stat and i know what you mean, but really what if a guy got 50 in games 21-70? Same thing, right? A great accomplishment, but the league only counts their 50 in 50 guys as the TEAM's first 50!

Neely, Mogilny and _________ all did it in "their" first 50 (not the teams), meaning they may have missed games for one reason or another.

was it Charlie Simmer ? I remember he had a couple of amazing years and missed a bunch of games early in the year.

Nope, not Simmer, but Bernie Nicholls came extremely close. He scored his 50th in his 51st game.

Ryan, if I am correct you will be disappointed with yourself. I believe it was Adam Graves who was the third player to get 50 goals in the first 50 games he played. He was a Ranger at the time.

*update

Sadly, I am wrong. My nature does not afford me patience so I had to see if i was correct. Nope. Graves has the Rangers franchise record for goals in a season with 52, but he did not do it in 50 games.

I may be wrong, but I remember a big stink about Jari Kurri get 50 in 50 but it was his 50th game played not in 50 games.
It was one the seasons in Edm when Gretzky had already gotten 50 in 50 only a few games earlier.
I was a big Oil fan in the Gretzky days and I remember something about Kurri doing it too

I knew Cam Neely, but couldn't remember Mogilny doing it. Kurri sounds right, now that he's been mentioned, so he'd be my third guess as well.

50 in the last 50 games though . . . to me, that actually means MORE than the traditional 50 in the first 50 games. It's tougher games against teams trying their best to make the playoffs!

Would love to know who besides Gretzky, Lemieux and Hull and Selanne have done it (I assume they did it, knowing how high their goal totals were).

Wrong again Beans, Jaromir Jagr holds the Rangers franchise record with 54 goals Though yes, Graves did hold the mark for 10+ years.

Kurri is correct. I thought Beans would get that one for sure, but Graves was an interesting pick. If he'd done it, and i'm guessing he was close, i don't think many would have come up with that name!

Here's the wikipedia article i confirmed it on. Scroll down and you'll see the guys who came very close.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/50_goals_in_50_games

Oh, and Ryan, you were closer than i thought with Simmer (i'd missed him as i looked at the article). Here's what it said about Simmer: Charlie Simmer of the Los Angeles Kings scored his 50th goal in his 51st game in 1980–81. In Simmer's 50th game, he had a hat trick to bring his goal total from 46 to 49. Simmer and Mike Bossy (see above) were involved in an exciting 'competition' to achieve 50-in-50 in 1980–81.
He came as close as you can, just like Nicholls!

I wasn't sure if Kurri had done it, but I remembered something about him. Now after reading Alex's link to wikipedia its hard to believe that Kurri actually hit 50 goals in Edmontons 53rd game only 4 games after Gretzky did it in 49 games that season.
Great question Alex116.
One note - according to your link there are 4, not 3, players to have scored 50 in 50 games played. Mario Lemieux is also on the list.

I'm not sure what you mean? Neely, Mogilny and Kurri all scored 50 or more goals in THEIR first 50 games.

Don't wanna go on as i don't want this to come off the wrong way! PC, lemme know what you mean.

The following players scored fifty goals in or before their 50th game in a single season, but do not officially qualify for 50-in-50 status because the NHL requires a player to have scored his 50th goal in or prior to his team's 50th game.

Jari Kurri (1984–85) of the Edmonton Oilers scored his 50th goal in his 50th game of the season, which was his team's 53rd game. He finished with 71 goals for the year.

Alexander Mogilny (1992–93) of the Buffalo Sabres scored his 50th goal in his 46th game of the season, which was his team's 53rd game. He finished with 76 goals for the year.

Mario Lemieux (1992–93 & 1995–96): in the 1992–93 season Lemieux scored his 50th goal in his 48th game, which was his team's 72nd game. He was plagued by injury that year, and finished with a total of 69 goals in 60 games played, having scored 19 goals in his remaining 12 games. In the 1995–96 season he scored his 50th goal in his 50th game (the team's 59th), and finished the season with 69 goals in 70 games.

Cam Neely (1993–94) of the Boston Bruins scored his 50th goal in his 44th game (his team's 66th game) — tied with Lemieux's 88-89 season for the fastest by any player other than Gretzky. Plagued by injury, Neely played a total of 49 games and did not score a goal in his remaining five games after reaching fifty.

I copied that right out of the Wikipedia link you provided.
All I was saying is that your original post asked for the three players to have done this. There are actually four. Even though Lemieux did the legit 50 in 50, he also did the 50 in his first 50 games played too.
Thats all, I am not making it a big deal, just something I noticed.
