Cory Sarich absolutely NAILED Taylor Hall very early in the game tonight between the Oilers and Flames. Hall appears to lose an edge just before the hit but either way, he was going to get smoked!!! Hard to blame Sarich, but apparenlty, and not surprisingly, Hall has a concussion which will be monitored.

The Flames made a big mistake tonight. They woke up a team which had nothing to gain by winning.
Sarich made a big hit on Taylor Hall early in the game, and he also took out Ryan Jones after his big hit on Hall, but being physical was not the best way to go for the Flames tonight.
The Flames physical (and undisciplined) play caused them to spend more time in the penalty box than the Oilers, and losing two points tonight could be the difference between them making, or not making, the playoffs.

Ya the Flames made a huge mistake by willing Hall to lose an edge...c'mon! They should be playing physical, every game needs to be like a playoff game.

| I've seen worse. Yes the head is the principle point of contact but it looks like his body absorbs a lot of the impact. It's not like his neck snaps or anything. |

| an unfortunate time to lose an edge. Sarich was going to smoke him anyway, but it was only because of the slip that Sarich's elbow makes contact with the head - otherwise Hall is probably fine. |

So Clatts, the Flames game plan worked?
They took a bunch of undisciplined penalties against a team which had little to gain by winning?
If you read the quotes today, the Oilers picked up their game after the Hall hit (which was a fair hit by the way), but Sarich was definitely gunning for Hall, and that's fine and fair, but they woke up the Oilers, and they lost.
But the Flames lost moreso for taking dumb penalties, and let's see if losing two points to the Oilers causes them to miss the playoffs. |

Yeah, I have to say, I agree with this thinking.
I've never been a guy to say this "they woke a team up with a big hit" theory . . . in fact, I think it's rather silly. Most of the time, that's the way you always strive for your team to play - tough, physical hockey. To wish for anything else, to potentially "lull the other team to sleep" . . . invites a whupping, IMHO.
The Flames just lost the game because they couldn't score, period - and because RNH had a very good game. Nothin more, nothing less.

And the Oilers two penalties were offsetting minors, when Hemsky exchanged slashing and crosschecking penalties with Giordano and Comeau.
Take away Iginla's tripping penalty in the last six seconds, and this still puts Calgary in five shorthanded situations against the league's top power play. (Which the Oilers were before the game started. Vancouver and Nashville are now slightly ahead in this category.)
Calgary took five minor penalties in the third period, including three tripping calls, and they managed only 2 shots in the final period.
It's okay to admit when your strategy or game plan doesn't work. I'm pretty sure Sutter didn't go in the dressing room after the game and say "well done boys."
I'm gonna guess he made some mention of undisciplined play.
Getting back to the original subject matter, the league ruled (correctly) that there would be no supplemental discipline on the play. How could there be anyway? Sarich was not penalized on the play. He was given two minutes for roughing when Whitney went after him after the hit, and Whitney received two roughing minors. So the Oilers ended up shorthanded.
Which, by the way, should be the call more often when players seek retribution when their teammate is on the wrong side of a big hit. (Especially if it's a clean hit.)

Yeah I agree, it was the right call on the ice although I think a roughing on Whitney would suffice rather than the 2 and 1 but it's not like sarge would have been out on the powerplay anyway.

| Hall - (Glen) played over 500 CONSECUTIVE games in net, a record that Sports Illustrated said in 1985 was the number ! sports record tha would never ever be broken. A little late coming for that shy, parochial, blinkers-on strictly American magazine but nonetheless standing up to this day. |

| Like it wasn't bad enough they blew it VS the OILers, the next game they lost to the Blue Jackets too. 4 easy points lost, I think that spells the end of any playoff hopes if you lose 2 in a row to the 2 worst teams in the league. |

They are still in the race but losing those games don't help their cause
