While reading the "what type of hockey..." topic, someone mentioned the commentators bring a lot to the games on TV. So who is your favourite announcer/commentator/analyst and why?

I'm a Leafs fan, so I guess it'd have to be Harry Neale. He's pretty funny and bring some worthwhile stats and opinions to the games. Mind you, that's in comparison to a lot of terrible commentators like Jim Hughson and Chris Cuthbert. I've listened to a couple Habs games and the radio guys they have on NHL.com are pretty good. They actually bring some relevant information to the game instead of stating the blatantly obvious.
What I can't stand are those guys that bring you "in depth analysis" from ice level. Glenn Healy and Pierre McGuire are probably the two worst guys in the NHL at stating the absolute obvious. While watching a playoff game last season, BUF at NYR I believe, Pierre Mcguire said "..The reason the Sabres were so effective on that penalty kill was because they got the puck down the ice." Thanks Pierre.
One thing that has completely turned me away from watching the west coast games is that Jim Hughson always has to say the first name of every player that is involved.
I'm not too familiar with a lot of the other announcers so let's hear it! |

Bob Cole is the best play by play announcer. He has the best voice, and by far the best tempo for the game and the way it's supposed to be called. His focus on the game creates a flow that no other can match. There are almost no digressions and any mistakes that he makes are almost ever significant. Joe bowen and Jim Hughson are next and Gord Miller follows but does have some bad digressions. For Color Commentary and analysis, Harry Neale is great, he has fantastic timing which makes for great flow and gives relevant and interesting info. McGuire is loud and obnoxious but very informative, Bob Mackenzie is also fantastic. Hrudey is interesting but a little monotone (dull-sounding). On the other side Healy is arrogant, loud, and too insistent with his analysis which is usually unimportant, wrong, or uninteresting. Millen is boring. |

Bob Cole and Harry Neale, I've heard these voices more then my own mother growing up watchin HCN. But the ultimate was my former neighbour Danny Gallivan, bless his soul, the voice of the Montreal Canadiens. |

I agree, Bob Cole and Harry Neale, other than the fact that I actually enjoy hearing what they have to say, have timeless voices. If tomorrow they hired some random young guy off the street to do the show, it jsut would not be the same. Some guys got it and some don't, and the government knows who they are hiring.

I absolutely agree with Guest7211 but I would add the name of Chris Cuthbert to the list of great play-by-play announcers: great voice, good tempo, and digressions to a minimum. Also, Joe Bowen sometimes allows too many digressions that he does not do a good job of stifling. However a good color commentary announcer has to know when to shut up so the play-by-play announcer can carry on his job which should take precedence when the play is on. This is part of the reason why Harry Neale is so good at his job. This is a reason why Healy sucks, he thinks his job is more important than the play-by-play announcer. This is also a problem with Pierre McGuire, though I like his excitement and enthusiasm, he can be a little too enthusiastic which crosses the border of obnoxiousness especially when he interferes with the p-b-p guy. Simpson isn't too bad, but I don't see him too much.

Oh I love the good ol' sound of Sabres announcer Rick Jeanerette. His goal calls are classic. In case anybody has never heard of him, check out this link. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JEfbyrKnKc0 |

I love to listen to Rick Jeanerette talking hockey on the radio shows. He is a very knowledgable articulate and an interesting man to listen to which is the direct opposite to his ability to call a game. The guy is like Jeckyl and Hyde. That high pitched screaming and moaning is the most assinine game calling I have ever heard and I'm 61. La La La La La Lafontaine is so absolutely hideous and deserves a visit to the announcer's booth with a bloody gag. I remember the first time I heard him just talking hockey on WGR in Buffalo and I could not believe it was the same guy as the screaming ninny doing the games. The best, our own Joe Bowen of course. Could somebody please tell me what distant star Greg Millen is from? |

Bob Cole by far; Clear, accurate unbiased play by play. The odd fact to fill the voids. When his tone gets excited, you can be aure it's a highlight. This is usually followed by an interesting stat. Harry Neale adds interesting tidbits to enhance the broadcast. It will be a sad day if/when Bob retires. |

Danny Gallivan was a gag me with a spoon announcer. He did nothing but remind me of his gag me with a spoon hockey team. The man seiously ruined my hockey for five years straight at one time. The Habs are definitely my most hated team. Number one on my list of the twenty nine. |

Bob Cole, clear and unbias?? What?? Have you watched HNIC in the past 5 years?? He has no idea who most of the players are and mispronounces almost every name. And unbias?? If the jersey doesn't have a Leaf on the front or say Crosby on the back, Cole has nothing good to say about it.
This is a complete joke.

Hey, Beans. Does Rod Phillips still do the Oilers' play-by-play on the radio? There's a classic. I seem to recall that somebody produced a single featuring Phillips calling plays that actually sold rather well.
The Oil WILL make the playoffs. |

hey boys....i will take a shoot out between danny g and foster h.....alot of you guys might be too young to appreciate a 15" black and white with bunny ears as your cable.....fuzzy screen ....broadcast used to start after the first period was over, so you would begin watching just after the first intermission....no out of town scores every 60 seconds.....6 teams.....anyway, i digress.....the two were the foundation of broadcasting today...... |

"Pronger, takes the puck up the ice......HE'S BIG!!!! He passes it over to Niedermayer..... HE CAN SKATE!!! Dumps it into the corner, the Ducks chase......THEY CAN"T FIND IT!!! "
Can anyone guess who is that?
Bob Cole is absolutely horrible at play by play. He is so biased and when the Leafs are losing a game, it's almost as if he doesn't care. Bob Cole is repetitive and points out the obvious. "He shot that high puck high" He said that once. Almost every 4 minutes he tells us the shots on goal, because we care so much about the shots on goal. If anyone was actually watching the game they would know what team has more shots on goal then the other. I can not listen to him on HNIC, I have to change the channel.
I love Rick Jeanneret though. So much enthusiasm, it just makes the game that much better. |

Jeanerette is the biggest beauty in the "league"...A lot of the American teams play by play guys are solid...As much as I don't like the Pens, that throaty play-by-play guy they have (or had..he's been doing it for a while, but I'm not sure if he still does) is classic. The Rangers guy really suits the Rangers. The Blues guy (former Colorado play-by-play guy) is fun too. The Caps guy is hilarious (remember the line "alex ovechkin rides again"...classic)...And the Sharks guy, "HE SCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" is great too. But Jeanerette is in a league of his own, he does play-by-play for fights as if he was a former UFC commentator. The Jeckle and Hyde comparisson is perfect, hahahaha.
Most Canadian commentators are a little too tightly wound for my taste, except Danny Galivan. I'm too young to have heard him live (I have heard old highlights with him before), but apparently an Oxford professer said "the words he uses don't even exist", to which Galivan replied "they do now", years later the word spinorramma was entered into the Canadian oxford dictionary...
I do like a few canadians though. Cuthberts my favorite, for the exact reasons guest 9323 said. TSN has to replace Gord Miller with him as their primary play-by-player!! Or maybe CBC could snag him back!

Bean 515 is totally right, Have you heard Bob Cole? He did the Vancouver Toronto game last season, he called bieksa bieska, Daniel sedin Dimitri sedin, Krajicek Krabchuk. All he knows is Toronto. Jim Hughson is the best. He could do any team in the nhl because he actually knows all the names and isnt goin senile like Cole. Why do you think EA chose Jim as their play by play announcer in the video games? |

The only thing good about Bob Cole is the sound of his voice is now deeply imbedded in eveyone's skull and it just sounds so Saturday night. What he has to say is something all together different though. I just think his time has come and gone now and it is time for him to move on. I don't wish him any ill will but it is over for him I am sorry to say. The word on the street had Jim Hughson replacing him but I am not a big fan of his although I've heard worse. Hughson to me is just too googily uppity giggly perfect. Please Jim, just say something nasty for once. Tell us how you really feel instead of candy coating everything. I listen to him and am surprised when I see the players not wearing flowers on their sweater shoulders? Enough of this, Bowen is the best bar none. Some of those foreign announcers are ok but their color guys are for the most part absolutely horrible. |

Yes, Phillips does the radio stuff still with Morley Scott. Phillips is by far, without question, the most biased play by play guy in history. However, his is also, without question, the most entertaining as well. He will undoubtedly have a heart attack or an anneurysm on the air one day.

I like Craig Simpson on the late games on HNIC. I think that even though he is/was an Oiler, his comments are very unbias and he talks hockey without the crap but not jaded or contridictory like McGuire.

I'll never forget Cuthbert's call of the Flyers/Penguins game....since I live in The States, I was fortunate to hear it on CBC rather than ESPN. I've looked high and low on the web for it, but I can't find it.
"SCOOOOREE - KEITH PRIMEAU - THE MARATHON MAN!"
Classic. If anyone knows where to find audio/video of that call, I'd live to get my hands on it.
Likewise, an announcer I can't believe nobody has mentioned is Pat Foley. He got hosed in Chicago a few years back and now does the Wolves games. I don't even live there and I listen to Wolves games just to hear him. Wish I could get TSN to hear Cuthbert as he's still the tops. Miss him gravely on CBC. |

Bob Cole's time is done, I fully agree with Antroman on this one. We have a memory of a fantastic voice - unfortunately, he is well past his prime and cannot follow the play well, remember the names, and has no interesting observations to offer.
Yeah Beans, I like Simpson as well, good call. I also don't mind Bob Mackenzie in the booth. Cuthbert's ok as well.
I wonder why no one has mentioned Ron Maclean? Although he gets into the histories of the players a bit too much and is a bit wordy, not many can even compare in terms of hockey knowledge . . . |

Between Phillips and Bryan Hall's post-game show, one would be lead to beleive that God, himself, bestowed the Oilers upon the NHL. I remember driving home from a few games that the Oilers lost, and Hall sounded absolutely suicidal! Some were pre-season, too!

A lot of guys have responded Bob Cole and Harry Neale. As a life-long, 35-yr-old Leafs fan who has missed perhaps a handful of televised games in that time period, I have one question. What the hell are you smoking? The only man worse than Don Cherry at pronouncing players' names is Bob Cole. Both Cole and Neale are too old, stale and tired to keep up with the flow of the game. Guys I like are those who inject some passion and humour into the game, like Glenn Healy, Pierre McGuire and Jim Hughson. All 3 will tell it like it is and are not "homers" like Cole and Neale. Even Healy, who played with the Leafs, will blast the team when they play bad, which is often. For you guys that picked Cole and Neale, try watching some actual T.V. games before giving an opinion. |

I remember about a year ago Cole and Neale having a whole discussion on how to pronounce Kovalchuk's name. They had been saying it Kovalchook for a year and a half.
The next day on TSN McKenzie made fun of it and asked how many more goals he would have to score to deserve to get his name pronounced right.
