Not sure if this will go or not, but I thought I would start a forum regarding things you have read about hockey. Not so much stuff on the internet as much as items that are in your locale paper. I live in Edmonton and the Edmonton Sun does a pretty big Sunday Sports section. Usually pretty good.

So, what have you read about hockey lately?? Please don't make things up and indicate where you learned the information.

Wayne or Bobby?? How about both!!!

I have issues with some of the items:

Best Skater - how does crosby and cogliano come ahead of Kovlchuk, Ovechkin, Koivu, alfredsson, or Datsyuk?

Hardest Shot - Everyone seems to forget that Freddy Modin has the hardest shot. It is only because he wasn't in the All-Star game, that it isn't official

Smartest Player - sorry, but crosby is not smarter than Datsyuk or Lecavalier, or the other two mentioned below him

Best Stickhandler - other than datsyuk, the other two would be far down the list, after some stickhandlers like gaborik, lecavalier, jagr, kovolchuk, hossa, spezza, and alfredsson...I could go on and on.

Sorry I don't think I really kept to the topic, but I just couldn't help myself

Remember Sakic, this isn't my opinion or yours for that matter. It's a poll of current NHL players.

I would think that they are the experts on these matters, wouldn't you??

I know, I know. I coudn't resist.....BUT....I would say that the results of the polling are in large part determined by who was polled. If you polled mostly players from a certain division or conference, then their opinions would probably tend to be biased. For example, if you ask philly players on who the best skater is, they may say crosby, because that is who they play against the most over the course of a season. Or maybe they'll say Briere because that's who they see playing day-in and day-out. But as a fan, I'll probably see more players than the actual players playing the game (this is in large part due to the stupid new nhl schedule). I know that the players themselves maybe able to look at the game at a micro-level (given that they are on the ice), but I think being at the micro-level also gives them tunnel vision, in that, they only see certain aspects of the game at certain times.
I think if they polled coaches, then that would be the most valid poll...just my 2 cents

I would love to comment on this topic But the T'burg News does not cover any NHL teams...

Now if you want to know how the Rep teams from T'burg are doing I can go on for days....

Just so every one know T'burg is short for Tillsonburg.

Always thought Stillman was under rated. In the last couple of years, he's been almost a point per game guy.

I'm reeling from Iginla as nicest guy though. He plays a mean game.

Very surprised that Lidstrom only showed up once in the best passer category. Thought he'd be a shoo-in for top 3 smartest.

The currently highest point getter (Vinny) is not even mentioned in any category. Strange or curious??

If it was really weighted towards Edmonton, Hemsky would have shown up as one of the top 3 stickhandlers (which he should be).

Why is Chara not on the list of best fighters? I don't think any of those 3 mentioned would want to take Chara on. Is he considered a defencemen rather than a pure fighter?

Nice to see Kopitar being recognized by the players between the Hawks rookies. Finally saw an LA game. He is awesome. He should have been in the under rated category. Can you do that for a 2nd year player?

Theodore didn't make it to the most over rated? What were those players thinking?

Saw the same list in the Ottawa Sun. For the Americans, Ottawa is the capital of Canada NOT Toronto.

Where is that darn edit button?

Another Crosby hater.

Of course you're right. What would other NHLers know about who the smartest players and best skaters are? Obviously you are more of an authority than, say, guys who play against him every night. Why, you probably watch SportsCentre three, four times a week.

Stupid professional hockey players.

Another crosby-lover....we could go back and forth at this all year long Fly. However, I will abstain from making any further comments about your boyfriend if it ails you so much. But I do take exception to you and your attitude towards my posts as if they have no merit whatsoever. The other thing that gets me is that you choose to ignore my other posts so that you can make comments in your favour. If you had read one of my previous posts, I had said that, I would like to see a polling done by coaches, as they would provide a more objective view. (I have a major in Sociology, so I know something about biased and unbiased surveys). But, once again, I am sorry if I like to say who I think is better than your choice because you are the only legitimate authority on hockey.

And so what if I do watch SportsCentre however many times I wish? Are you suggesting I should be sitting around my tv and order all of the hockey games in the NHL on my digital box, while sitting around on my couch with a big bowl of chips laying on my potbelly, while thinking to myself: Man, do I know more than everyone else, or what? You maybe that person, I however, am not. But I do watch what hockey games I can, and watch the sports shows to catch up on things that are going on in the NHL, other than just in TO. I would think that if you polled the people on these forums, you would find that the majority falls into this category.

For every one else: forget about posting to these forums, because Fly knows more that we do! He is the only one who's opinion matters!

Part 1

When Gaborik got his 5 goal game, I think it might have been the Sun Sentinel or the USA TOday down in Florida that had the headline 'Glimpses of Pavel Bure'

This to me is very exciting, because I think that with less injuries Gaborik could be an amazing player. Obviously the issue is consistency, but you look at the guys speed, and if he learns to harness that type of potent weapon and use it properly, he will be unbelievable. I believe speed is the number one important thing in hockey behind maybe a balance of smart play / hockey sense.

Was this just a good headline, or is there some truth

Part 2

The Gaborik one was something that first popped up in my mind, so I felt I should post it. But I'm really glad Beans that you started this forum, because in the States especially I think the papers tell all there is to say about why hockey does not catch on.

For 3 weeks, without fail, hockey was last page material in the sports section of USA today. I would say for about 16 of those days, the article was about the USA junior team. Other than that, it was about a struggling Panthers team, the Gaborik story, and the outdoor hockey classic. And the time that we merit more than a half-stub of info, what is the feature but the longest suspension in the NHL, Chris Simon. See why we get bad publicity?

Americans are very into themselves, and hockey is not their game.

Part 3

And lastly, I read that Iginla and Huselieus won nos. 1 and 2 in clutch players for December. The headline was something like 'Iginla's clutch not limited to on the ice' Thoughts?
