Off of NHL.com :
quote:
Who is the League's most gifted playmaker?
Total Votes:6275
S. Crosby (PIT): 49.15% P. Datsyuk (DET): 17.71% M. Savard (BOS): 2.77% H. Sedin (VAN): 5.07% J. Spezza (OTT): 7.52% J. Thornton (SJS): 10.77% Other: 7.01%
HALF THE VOTES ! This kid gets half the votes??? Yes, yes Crosby is :"the face of the NHL", "He's the next one" blah blah blah. One word - Bulls***. Thornton is WAY better playmaker than Crosby, yes Crosby has 43 assists and Thornton has 41, 2 assists and he's 40% better? Thornton is putting up big numbers when he's playing with slumping players, where are his linemates?? Marleau has 22 points and Cheechoo's got 13. The player with the 2nd most points on the team is Milan Michalek with 26! WHAT? now you will say Crosby has no good linemates either, Malkin, "but he does't play wiht him" Crosby has 23 points on the PP, most of which he had Gonchar, Malkin etc. to paly with. Where Thornton would hold the puck for 2 minutes fighting off the defenders making great passes to where his teammates can't make a simple tap in. And get this Thornton has 14 GOALS! That's 2nd on his team. Not only does this guy set-up all his linemates who aren't doing s*** all to help him but he's scoring goals too, He has practically picked up this team and dragged them into 1st place in the Pacific, with some spectacular goaltending from Nabokov.
To all you who think Crosby is god, the next one, the best player in the league . Do this for me, Watch a hockey game don't just look at a poll and see Crosby's name on it and say "oh he gets my vote". I was fully expecting Crosby to win this poll but when he gets 50% and Thornton gets 10% tha just pisses me right off.

Like some announcers/coaches have said before,
they aren't selling the NHL as product, they are selling Crosby. |

Well, it's pretty tough to argue for one player or another when "most gifted playmaker" can be defined in so many ways. Most gifted implies most talented - not necessarily who is actually doing their best right now.
With that being said, I agree about Thornton - he is carrying SJ on his back right now. But a truly gifted playmaker makes their linemates much better as well, elevating their status to a much higher level than they could ever achieve on their own.
So, keeping that in mind - my vote would be for Crosby first, Thornton second, Datsyuk third. |

Here's the problem. The vasta majority of the voters I would bet my life on are from the East Coast. They don't get to see Thornton enough so they vote on who they see. I would agree that Crosby is the best playmaker in the Eastern Conference.
And remember, to be a "Playmaker" doesn't mean you get a ton of assists. The best passers may not get a ton of assists. A playmaker is, in my opinion, the guy who generate the play. Could be though passing, could be through skating, could be through forechecking, could be through many different things.
In that aspect, I would say Crosby does outside Thornton. Thornton is a brilliant set up guy. Could be the best in the league at seeing a guy in a scoring position and getting him the puck. But, that doesn't mean he's the best playmaker.
Wayne or Bobby?? How about both!!! |

What about the forwards who backcheck and pick up the puck? What about guys like Nicklas Lidstrom who come up with the puck most of the time and start the rush the other way.
A play is just that - a play. A totally intertwined sequence of related events that compliment each other. And for that, every single guy is responsible. Now, who is the most? Not the guy who passes the most to guys who score. The guy who starts a play.
If you look at the NFl, last week Randy Moss had one T.D. Did he have a bad game? I would say he was their most valuable player in that contest. Why? As they say, his reputation preceded him. He dragged two defenders on him in the red zone, because they knew what he could do. This always left someone with more breathing room than should be allowed. How big those things are probably only Bellichek can measure. The point is, a team is there to make a play. No single player is responsible. Everyone is collectively involved.

I would agree with you, but...
I don't see any of Crosby's linesmates any better than they could be. If they are, i'm not sure why they are playing in the NHL. Except Sykora now. When playing with him

How would you determine a vast majority are from the East Coast?
Doest the East have more internet users, or more visitors to NHL.com?
Just a bit curious how you'd determine this.
