i think Columbus has a turn around season. With a healthy team they play a really good defensive style, add the scoring touch of Nash, Huselius and Brassard and good tending by Mason and you might have something. Also St. Louis if healthy makes the playoffs this year. Watch out for Kariya, Mcdonald and Boyes!

i really think ottawa can turn it around this year. they have their head coach and i think he'll b around ALL year. also they hope that they have finally founf their number 1 goalie in leclaire. as for the new guys, look for cheechoo to have a rebound year, michalek to show his best stuff and kovalev to b more consistent now that the pressure of being the main guy on the team is gone. and of course spezza and alfie should have good years as always

I voted Vancouver, but i wouldn't really consider them a "Cinderella" this year. Many expect them to win their division and do well in the playoffs? Some of the other teams i wouldn't consider Cinderella's would be Buffalo, Carolina, Anaheim, St. Louis etc. Basically, any team that made the playoffs last year, unless i felt they could go from a low seed to maybe a high seed?

Anyway, out of the non playoff teams from last year, i'd have to go with Ottawa to have a bounce back year.

I voted Vancouver here, because I believe it will be them.

But, I am hoping my Ottawa Senators will do the same.

I dislike the loss of Heatley, of course. But the additions up front of Kovalev, Cheechoo & Michalek aren't too shabby.

Vancouver doesn't belong in this poll - they should be and are considered a true Stanley Cup contender.

Putting them aside, I voted Columbus. They are very much on the right track, and I think they will continue to push forward this year after last year's playoff glimpse.

I voted for the team that I think will finish highest in the standings, not make the biggest jump upwards. I predict Tampa Bay to make the biggest leap up in points, followed by Toronto.

It reall is so tough to predict now, however . . . so much parity in the league, and it seems like all the former doormats of the league - the Jackets, Blues, Isles, TB, and of course what used to be a bad Chicago team - are all heading at least towards respectability.

Well, everyone except maybe Florida and Atlanta.

I agree that the canucks shouldn't be there, I can't believe no one has mentioned Nashville though. They play a choking style, have a great defensive core, and now that Sullivan's back, they can probably manage more than 2 goals in a few games.

St. Louis and/or Anaheim .. Vancouver shouldn't even be on this list 100+ pts last year I'm not sure but last time I checked that doesn't qualify as 'cinderella'. Mide as well call Detriot cinerella too.

I think that L.A. will do pretty good this year with Kopitar, Brown, Frolov, Smyth, and/maybe Handzus and Greene.

Vancouver is a contender not a cinderella team.

So on that list Vancouver will do the best but LA, Tampa Bay, Ottawa, Toronto and Dallas could all make the playoffs this year compare to missing them last year.

Vermette was traded to Columbus.
They do have Kovalev, Leclaire, Michalek, Fisher and a young Karlsson though. That should do the trick.

Funny how in this poll everyone is stating Vancouver and Ottawa as sleeper teams, but in the NE poll I'm up against a wall endorsing Ottawa as my favorite for NE division champs this year.

I definitly think this is Ottawa's year, if for no other reason than the fact that finally the pressure is off of them, to be the best team in the league.

Your right! The pressure is off Ottawa. Still doesnt mean they have a good enough team to win the northeast division.

Lets see here. They have a brutal defensive core (with the exception of injury prone Volchenkov and Chris Phillips) in front of a goalie who hasnt proved himself as a top end goalie.

Up front they have lost a 50 goal scorer. They did gain another 50 goal scorer but not of the quality of Dany Heatley. Cheechoo's totals have tailed off dramatically. Kovalev was a good pickup but I sense this wont help much.

I guess Campoli and Kuba are chumps and you forgot Michalek wow what a bunch of bums! Why is one former 50 goal scorer better or worse than another former 50 goal scorer. At least Cheechoo is responsible in his own end.

To be honest they lost a 39 goal 72 point player with attitude, replaced with a 12 goal 29 point player, 23 goal 57 point playerand another 26 goal and 65 point player. Kovalev on his own may equal Heatleys stats, plus the work effort of the other 2.

By the way to define the defense as poor defensively shows you dont know what your talking about. Its not the defense, its the offensive contribution the defense has to offer thats the question. Thanks for coming out!

Why are so many people picking Vancouver, they had 100 pts last year. The post title is for CINDERELLA TEAM... that's rags to riches people. I'd say only non-playoff teams from last year should even qualify, furthermore I'd say even bubble teams that didn't make it would be out. I'd say a Cinderella Run would have to come from teams like NYI, TB, ATL, TOR, COL, LA, PHX... In the context of the actual story Phx making it to the playoffs, and unbelievably further than round 1 would be best cinderella team.

But if you're asking about likelihood, I'd say LA would be the best pick for a Cinderella run IMO.

They lost a 72 point player who did not have a stellar year(usually 100 point player) and was falsely portrayed by the media as having a bad attitude. GAINED a 65 point player whos point tallies wont be nearly as high with a proven bad attitude. Remember when he was asked to stay home on a road trip last year by GM Bob Gainey.

With regards to the defense, I was talking about effective players. Kuba and Campoli are just there though Campoli has potential. You make it seem like they are great players.

Another thing I dont understand about your post. Are you saying you would rather a group of skilled offensive defensemen over a group of skilled defensive defensemen on your back end. I dont understand what you were trying to say with your last couple lines. NO PROBLEM

I'm going to say the St. Luis Blues and Pheonix Coyotes will have decent seasons. Not excellent, but I believe they will make a showing that they are not to be taken lightly.

I don't say this because of the first two St. Luis games, but because of the young talent the Blues have. They have a decent young team building there, and may do something with it.

As for the Coyotes, a coaching change and few vets added this season may be what they needed to actually compete in the NHL. They're likely not going to make the playoffs, but they may actually be taken seriously after a few games.

The NYI have a nice young top line, but after that they have 0 depth and their back end, well, it's just awful. Streit and Witt can't do it alone. Goaltending wise, they may have solved the problem of DiPetro being missing. But, still not going to compete much yet.

Too your last question, I was refering to the fact that the defensive minded d men are of good quality, but the team lacks offensive minded d men. I do think Kuba and Campoli are great young dmen who may step it up offensively.

Kovalev bad attitude or not is gifted offensively, and has not played with superstar players like Spezza and Alfredson in 5 or so years. I expect his points total to go up this year even though he wont see regular playing time with either unless he and Alfredson are paired up. Plus I notice you still havent added all the new pieces, just the one you wish to compare.

We really should be arguing this in a Ottawa forum.

Buffalo never made the playoffs last year. Also, how is Vanocuver in here? Calgary would technically be more of a Cinderella team than them, and neither are even close to Cindarella teams.

Here a link by a professional on his take on both Campoli and Kovalev, so you dont think its what I'm smoking. BTW Michalek got a hatrick with 2 shorthanded and one powerplay last night and Kovalev got his 2nd. I figure I'm not off the mark by much with my statement. We will see how they end up at the end of the year.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=498014

the quote was:
I'll nominate Chris Campoli. He's not the goal scorer Wideman is, but he's a very adept puck-moving defenseman who excels on the power play, and I project Campoli for 8-33-41, which would be an 11-point increase from his 2008-09 stats. Ottawa had the 10th-best power-play percentage last season (19.5) and the additions of Alexei Kovalev and a full-season from Campoli could make the Senators even better with the man-advantage.

No doubt, Ottawa looks good! and i have Alfredsson in the pool all the power to them. However everyone here thinks Vancouver is a top rated team...i don't see it, i didn't see it when i posted this topic thats why i included them, and i don't think they will turn it around either. They are only an average team. Vancouver still a cinderlla team to me!

I still say the Cinderella team will be the Blues or Coyotes.

The Blues are developing some talented youth, and if they can keep Kariya healthy, they have scoring up front to help those youth reach potential.

As for the Coyotes, a coaching change and media down-play about their future should help them focus on hockey.

They have added some vets that will definatly assist them in this years race. Lang will help in the scoring department, adding 20-30 along with others. And Bryzgalov can be a good goaltender, he just needs some more help from his D-core.
