... if I hear "take away time and space' in hockey commentary ONE MORE TIME... I think I'm gonna puke!!!! I blame McGuire for starting that whole thing... what does that MEAN anyway? Just "stay on your man" for pete's sake!... REALLY? Time and Space?... geesh... this is HOCKEY... NOT sci-fi drama! LOL

Any other over-used hockey phrases that you find irritating?

Taking away time and space definitely is not a McGuire thing, nor do I really see what you're problem with it is. Essentially by "staying on your man", your cutting down on the space he has to work with and making him take longer to make a play, thus "taking away his time and space". I'd honestly rather not hear "stay on your man" exclusively.

I guess that's my point, ANY phrase gets tired when it's overused. I just seem to hear that phrase lately more than any other and it seems to grate on my nerves, especially when McGuire says it in his "monster" voice. JUST KIDDING!

No doubt, that phrase will probably be overused during the Olympics too. I was just curious if there are phrases or hockey buzz words that other people would rather NOT hear any more... thats all...

Taking away time and space . . . well, I can see how one would get annoyed with that phrase, especially after analysing it. How can one take away time? One can only restrict another player's time to do damage to your team, and of course, that's what they mean . . . and again, one can only restrict space without getting penalised for "hugging".

I am sick and tired of a player saying "we have to play better" or that the team, to get out of a rut, has to "play better". Ugh, what idiocy.

The whole time and space doesn't bother me. Ask an NHL player if Lidstrom takes away their time and space and they will agree. It does make sense, but it seems more like you are a McGuire hater rather then the saying itself.

Also I do completely agree on the whole "our team has to play better", I really noticed it the other night when Crosby said it. Of course you have to play better, but I'd like to see a player with some knowledgable insight on the game. When Craig Conroy is interviewed he breaks it down piece by piece, we need more of that rather than the generic feedback. Then again, maybe a player wants the media to get out of his face after a loss and not ask the same stupid questions?

doesn't quite have the same ring as "he dekes, he shoots, he scores" eh? .... but yeah, any overused phrase gets annoying - this particular "time and space" i have to agree, i simply don't like from the first few times i heard it

Peter Loubardious' "SOME KIND OF GOAL"

If he doesn't stop saying that, I'm going to sue Sportsnet!

If he stops saying that I'm still going to sue Sportsnet for having him on commentary!

There was once a license plate in Toronto that abbreviated "Go Leafs" it read "Golfs".

The phrase that absolutely drives me nuts is;

'I thought you said it was bigger!!!'

And a bunch of hockey phrases irritate me as well.....

I actually kind of like it......

I wish this I heard this more often in hockey commentary after a goal:"He scored that top shelf, where momma hides the cookie jar!"

That never gets old.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttttttt saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaavvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeee Luongo!

That doesn't get old. But I hate John Shorthouse. His voice is so annoyyyinig! The best commentater is easily Jim Hughson. If Don Taylor could commentate that would be something.
