Thoughts on Leafs acquiring Phaneuf, Giguere

How did they manage to trade away Blake contract?

Sure GIguere had an efty contract as well, but Blake AND Toskala. This is amazing, hopefully Gigučre can find his form back. And losing Toskala and Blake is nothing big.

As for Phaneuf, I am stunned. Both Stajan and Mayers were UFA so no big lost there, and Hagman so this was Hagman and White for Phaneuf.

Hagman and White are good players and they should help Calgary, but to get Phaneuf for them is a good trade in my opinion. Hopefully this will spark the Leafs blue line and the Leafs young guns who will make the step in the NHL now. Like Stalberg and Hanson and Bozak should stay there. Also Sjostrom and Aulie are just adding depth because the Leafs lost a lot of players in that move.

I am so glad to see Phaneuf as a Leafs and Gigučre maybe can return to form and help the development of Gustavsson.

Honnestly I like both trade, plus they did it without trading away any draft pick. The biggest lost is Ian White, but really with Phaneuf, Kaberle, Beauchemin, Komisarek, Schenn, Finger, Exelby and Gunnarson on the blue line, I'm ok with this.

This could be two examples of both teams winning, as Phaneuf, Giguere and Toskala all needed a change of scenery big time. The play of all three could improve. Its funny you said the leafs did all this without giving away draft picks (they had none to give). Burke is definitely gambling now, but something had to be done to shake up this awful team. Time will tell if the gambles pay off.

Awesome trades for all teams involved. Except Calgary kind of gave up alot of depth, 2 high end prospects. As of today it is pretty even but down the road things could change.

The only team I think you could argue lost today is the Ducks. They don't noticably improve their team. It is possible that Blake could mesh in Anaheim and they needed someone to help fill the holes Selanne and Lupul left, but personally I don't see Blake (at 4 million a year) being that guy. But if Blake puts up decent numbers or them its win-win-win for all teams involved today.

wow..... Boston is the biggest winner today. They now have the first pick in the draft locked up. Could help TO in the future but they gave up four forwards today. Three of them were on the first two lines. They gave up stajan and hagman, their two best forwards other then Kessel and they gave up the only player Kessel could play with so basically they arent gonna have any offense for the rest of the season.
Winner of the Day: Boston Bruins with Torontos first rounder!

I like how we have 4 different topics about the same thing. Was that really necessary?

edit: make that 5 now

Wow.

When I first seen these trades happen today, I was asking my self "What are the Leafs going to do for offense?"

Then, after evaluating. I'm not sure it matters.

The Leafs have acquired a #2 D-man for their team, behind Kaberle. Something they needed desperatly. They also get a legitimate #1 goaltender (in my opinion) to play in net next year, with Gustavsson backing him up. (not starting)

The Leafs have now opened up some cap room for the offseason, where they can then focus on adding secondary scoring. The type of guys they lost, won't be impossible to get back during the offseason.

And at the end of the day, they weren't going anywhere this year anyways.
