Posted - 04/10/2012 : 05:13:14 Pickuphockey members, guests, esteemed associates, puckheads:
It's the game you've all been waiting for . . . the 2012 Playoff Match-Up Extravaganza! As in previous years, the rules are simple: pick the winner of each series, and if you are in the top half of players who have correctly picked the most series, you go through to the next round! This continues until the cup finals, when a winner will be chosen, and the glory will be yours - along with the envy of every smartass PUH member
Along with choosing the correct series, each player and entry will include the prediction of how many games the series will go. To prevent "bet hedging" and to promote fairness, I will have the tie-breaker point system work like this, with the more points accrued the better:
Correct series length, correct winning team: 3 pts. Correct series length, wrong winning team: 1 pt.
Anything else does not get you a point.
Once we reach the finals, another tie-breaker may have to be included. Please note that the tie-breaking points for correctly guessing series length will be CUMULATIVE - that is, it is carried over from round to round.
I want to reward overall ability in guessing, not reward the guy who got one lucky round.
Good luck to all, and may the best PUH member win! I will be entering my picks tomorrow, btw, but consider the gates open as of now to submit an entry, and obviously, at 7pm game time tomorrow, the game will be closed to all further entries.

And with a showering of boos raining down from the crowd as I waddle out like a lame duck commissioner to hand out the trophy . . .
. . . it is with great pleasure that I hand out this year's PUH PLAYOFF MATCH-UP Game trophy . . . yes, the cybertronic and illusory Stanky Cup . . . to . . .
. . . OPEN ICE !!!!
Congrats my man, you deserved it. You gave 110%, played hard every round, and in the end, had the most talent this year to bring the cup on home (wherever that may be).

Dude, do the math. You are the only one who picked the Kings in 6 games, Foolpittier picked them in 5, so he can't get the 3 points, or even the one point. If you get the 3 points then, you win on the tiebreaker. If the Kings didn't win tonight, you'd lose on the tie breaker no matter what you said for series goal totals.
Anyways, looks like you won it.

So, here is the situation for all concerned:
1) If the LA Kings win tonight, Open Ice wins it with his Kings in 6 prediction, as he would then edge out foolpittier on the first tiebreaker - series length prediction points.
2) If New Jersey wins tonight, Open Ice cannot win it, and it's then between Alex and Foolpittier - and then it's quite simple: Kings win. foolpittier wins; Devils win, and Alex wins.
So, Alex and foolpittier are Devils fans for a night, and Open Ice cheers on the Kings.

Then again, LA just doesn't seem to lose on the road so with 2 of 3 (if needed) in NJ, it seems to play into the Kings favour! |

Foolpittier looks to be in the lead to win this thing. With the Kings in 5 guess, and together with the fact that he would still lead over Open Ice if the Kings swept . . . it looks like it's his to lose, at ts point.
I mean, for Open Ice - he needs 2 New Jersey wins, and that looks so unlikely at the moment. And for Alex . . . yeah, it doesn't look good at all knowing Jersey would have to take 4 out of 5 against a team this hot.

Good job Open Ice, i hope there's 24 goals scored after that classy move! Of course, i hope the Devils win it though. However, the game 1 OT loss hurts. Sure makes game to the proverbial "must win" for the Devils! |

Unless my counting is off all three of us have gotten the same number of series winning teams correct in the playoffs and we are within one tiebreaker point meaning that any of us can still actually win. That is exciting!
Oh yes, that is totally correct Open Ice - it's as close (or wide open as it were) as can be in the final. Obviously, with 2 votes for the Kings and 1 for the Devils, you'll have to get the right team - and if it's the Kings, you'll have to get the right number of games for the series.
If it's the Kings who win, and it's not in 5 or 6 games that they do it . . . well, then it goes to foolpittier, who has one more Series Length point than you . . . so in this case, the third tie-breaker will not be necessary it seems. BUT - I do really appreciate that you could have shaved a goal off of foolpittier's window, but instead chose what you would have guessed in the first place. That's class, dude.
And obviously, if the Devils win, it's Alex!
Good luck to all three of you . . . looks like it's gonna be a real closely contested series!

Posted - 05/30/2012 : 04:28:13 Well, I wouldn't 100% bet on Open Ice going with the Kings, Alex . . . the reason he and you guys made it to the finals in the first place is because you have gone with some of the unpopular picks (ie NJ over the Rangers last round).
That being said - my personal pick would be Kings in 6, 27 total goals, Dustin Brown gets MVP.

Posted - 05/28/2012 : 15:20:09 Here are the final standings for Round 3. They are in order, with the first number series denoting winning team picks; the second number marked as SL pts (Series Length points), and the number in brackets how many goals off the total goals you were (both series added up, and obviously the lower the number, the better in this case):
foolpittier - 2 for 2, 8 SL pts (12) Alex116 - 2 for 2, 8 SL pts (14) Open Ice - 2 for 2, 7 SL pts (15) ------------------------------------------ slozo - 1 for 2, 11 SL pts (6) mandree888 - 1 for 2, 6 SL pts (N/A) Clatts - 1 for 2, 3 SL pts (N/A) Guest 9173 - 1 for 2, 2 SL pts (N/A)
My own darn fault for not clarifying the point of where the cutoff line would be, even though once those late entries came in I had it in my head to make it top 4 out of 7. But, that being the case - myself not making it clear, that is - I am going to make the cut-off at the top three who went 2 for 2, which is sort of the easiest way to decide anyways the way it worked out here. I mean, it just might seem a bit unfair to some if I only include myself as the lone 1 for 2 guy, and like I said, I didn't make it clear, so that is my own fault.
So, foolpittier, Alex116 and Open Ice are in the finals. As all three of you can see, your tie-breakers are all very, very close . . . so it is likely that they will be used - especially since it's possible two of you might pick the correct winning team.
Good luck guys!

Wow, 7-1 is pretty good considering you didn't even pick between the Blues and Sharks!
Keep the faith, the Canucks must still have a shot! If you ever begin to lose faith, look up Pasty's "Canucks got cheated" post for reassurance, and some good laughs. |

Same goes with you Clatts - you automatically lose all tie-breakers due to the late entry, but you're in.
So how that works will be thus, for the late entry guys: 1) your goal totals are thrown out 2) your series prediction is not counted either, you will automatically get 0 points fr this round
If you still make it to the final and then put in a timely entry, you are good to go for all tie-breakers.

Posted - 05/13/2012 : 18:57:53 Last post for the day,
The Standings for the Final will be determined by: 1) number of match-ups correct 2) 1st tie-breaker: points accrued from guessing series length 3) 2nd tie-breaker: lowest difference for guess of series goal totals
Right now we just have 4 contestants who put in their entries on time; So I might just take the top 2 for this round . . .
Open Ice - NJ, LAK Alex - NJ, LAK slozo - NYR, LAK foolpittier - NJ, LAK
If the contestants remain the same, there won't be a need for any tie-break if Jersey and the Kings win. Other than that outcome however . . . it'll get dicey.
Lord help us all if Phoenix actually wins!

Posted - 05/13/2012 : 17:23:55 Ok,
As of the puck drop, Mandree, Clatts and the Guest lost their "tiebreaker" rights. They can still put in their picks until the beginning of the next game . . . and still have the possibility to advance - but basically, they'll have to get both games correct, since they will lose any tie-break to the contestants who put in their picks in a timely manner.
Make sense? Fair? I hope so.
