Not sure but i don't think anyone's calling him a "bad" goalie and if they are, they're not smart. To call someone overrated is very debateable as it really depends on who's opinion you're comparing his value to. |

Roy has one. I only listed the guys who had more than 1.
Bottom line, Nabokov gets the beat down because he did not win the playoffs. Ultimately, it's warranted. He simply couldn't win when it counted.
But, he did win a TON of games. 293 puts him only at 27 on the all time win list, but he is also one of only 2 goalies in the top 30 all time wins who have less than 600 games played. Of those 30 goalies, he is 7th in win %. His save % is just 2 points behind the great Marty Brodeur.

There have been various teams through the years who have been significantly better than the Sharks and their goalies did not have 40 win seasons. In facts, a 40+ win season has happened just 44 times in the entire span of the NHL. Furthermore, there are10 goalies in the history of the game who have more than 1-40 win season.
Broduer has 8
Sawchuck, Kiprusoff, Plante, and Nabokov have with 3 each.
Perent, Belfour, Luongo, Miller, and Dryden have 2 each.
It's maybe a fluke once (guys like Turek and Kolzig come to mind) but to have 3?? To have more than anyone else except Brodeur??
Give credit where credit is do. Nabokov was(is) an amazing regular season goalie and if he had a Cup or 2, he would be in some people's top 5 all time list, but most people's top 10 all time list.

Wow, awesome stat(s) there Beans! Really puts it into perspective. Would have thought Dryden would have a few more but he did share the net a fair amount back in his day. |

What if Nabokov played for those devils teams in his prime. We might be talking a few stanley cups on his resume. Some of those devils teams were powerhouses of their day. |

When you put the shoe on the other foot for a second, this is not a surprise.
Picture a Canadian playing in the KHL who is about 35 years old and he gets told he can stay in Moscow for $1 million a season or he can go and play for the Oilers (least liked NHL team in recent player polls) for $2 million a season.
Where do you think that Canadian's gonna play??
Exactly as Irvine said, he would have been lucky to get a $8M for 2 year deal. Instead he gets $24M over 4 and gets to play in his home country.

Yeah, it really seems that Nabakov was a victim of the market for goalies at this time, and a victim of the past playoffs having the goalies they did.
This is huge for the KHL though, and make no mistake about it, the NHL is getting itchy about others (especially the Russian stars) following suit.
But I bet you he comes back in a year or two.

Indeed he did, and I can't say i'm surprised.
If Nabokov wanted/expected more than $4M per season, it was only going to come from the KHL. And, it did.
He signed a 4-year, $6M per year contract in the KHL. No NHL team was willing to pay that for a goaltender this year, I don't think. All teams are seeking (or seem to be), cheaper alternatives.
Is Nabokov worth $6M per year? Perhaps. He is among (numbers wise), the elite goalies in the NHL. But, he's not going to get that.

That is exact same what I would say,and if you watch the interview with Dan Rusanowsky and Doug Wilson,also the article on NHL.com he hints that he has to sign Pavs,Seto,Scotty,Manny and Ortie he says nothing about Marleau so that means he might be moving on.

Beans, I agree - Nabokov must certainly now be on Washington's radar - he's Russian and he's a huge upgrade from what they had last year. He'd have to take a discount, WASH can't afford 6M for a goalie - but I'd have to think that a chance to play for WAS and possibly win a cup would be attractive to him. I would guess his upcoming contract will be his last.
Phili might be an option too. I don't think LA is looking for a goalie. |

San Jose has had a history of finding prime goalies. At one time, Nabokov, Toskala, and Kipprusoff were all in the Sharks system at one time. I agree that Greiss does not seem to be the guy, but at the same time he only gets about 10 games a year playing behind Nabokov. He might be the guy that none of us know about.
I also think Nabokov lands a job with a contender. Washington and Philly come to mind. I would also put LA as an outside shot if Nabokov is interested in staying in Sunny California. |

They are definitely going in the direction of Hawks, Flyers etc. in terms of goaltending, but will they choose the right guy for the job? |

I can't really say its much of a surprise - the rumours were there, everyone was aware of the cap issues that would have been facing the Sharks - if they want to keep their team intact and have any shot at all of keeping Marleau, they could only really dedicate 2-3M to goaltending.
The question now is, who comes in? I can't believe they're going to go with Greiss, so they'll have to sign a UFA. My guess is they'll make a play for Mason, or possibly Emery (if he's healthy). |

will be hard to replace, but i cant say that i'll miss him. He never lost us a game or series, but he never won us one either. Once again he will be hard to replace and i am sad to see him go but at the same time i think this is the right move for the sharks. |
