The Oilers have traded Andrew Cogliano to the Ducks for a 2nd round draft pick.

I think they're paying too much for Cogliano, but one thing for sure – he never missed a game in his four seasons with the Oilers, so he's proven himself to be durable (or lucky).

He's meant to be more of a 2 way forward down there. He is the replacement for Marchant, who was the exact same style of player lol

By the way, that's a $7.17 million 3-year deal. $7 and 17¢ would have been a helluva deal for Cogliano! :) |

Just my opinion here but i think the 2013 draft pick may have been intentional in order to try and trade for depth at the trade deadline that year. If the oilers expect a decent playoff run that year that is. |

I agree with Beans that the Oilers had no room for Cogliano, so the trade makes sense.
And I also agree with Guest 4312 that it would have been better to get a 2012 pick rather than a 2013 pick. (I suspect they tried though.)
Funny thing – an average 2nd round pick (middle of the pack) doesn't usually get you a player of Cogliano's ordinary stature. In fact, Cogliano would be a bit better than average for what you get around the middle of the second round.
However, there have been some very good mid-round picks in recent history, including: Matt Greene, Duncan Keith, Patrice Bergeron, Shea Weber, Paul Stastny, Milan Lucic, to name a few.
So the Oilers probably got the most they could for Cogliano, and if they can turn this pick into a decent NHL player, they end up looking like the winner of this trade, but who's going to remember this in 4-5 years, because it's rare for 2nd round picks to make an impact in the NHL (if at all) for 2-3 years after their draft year. |

Good pick-up for the Ducks third line, for pretty cheap. Adds to the depth in an aging Anaheim lineup (after their first line).

with the rebuild in full effect the oilers might have been better off getting a second rounder for the upcoming 2012 draft rather than 2013 or a prospect that can jump in sooner than this player will be able to |

Odd man out. With Horcoff signed long term and nearly a certain #1 or #2 centre, Gagner with better skill (but lesser speed) than Cogliano, and Hopkins waiting in the wings there is no room for a Cogliano.
I liked him last year and he really did his 3rd line role well. However, I don't think the Oilers miss him today or tomorrow. |
