Posted - 10/21/2007 : 18:28:29 Hey everyone, just wondering what kind of hockey stuff you have that you are paticularly proud of. I'm a huge collector of hockey paraphernalia, such as cards, sticks, jerseys, and so on. List a few things of yours, if you like. It's not really bragging, it's sharing.
My top 10:
1. Autographed Wayne Gretzky card, obtained through the mail about 15 years ago. 2. Autographed Gordie Howe card, obtained in person when I met Gordie about 14 years ago. 3. My autographed Nick Schultz game-used Team Canada jersey, purchased off of eBay but signed in person. 4. Montreal Canadiens oldtimers hockey stick, autographed by quite a few notables - Maurice Richard, Henri Richard and Eddie Shack to name a few. Obtained in person when I was a kid and they played a fundraiser game in my hometown. 5. My Gretzky rookie card, bought when I was 9 or 10 years old. 6. My Sid Crosby autographed jersey (not game-used). Bought it off of eBay before he'd played an NHL game. 7. My Dany Heatley autographed game used jersey (even though he was a Thrasher at the time). Obtained by a friend of mine in the NHL. 8. My Paul Coffey autographed jersey, signed after he entered the Hall of Fame. 9. My Messier rookie card, which I traded a Lanny MacDonald autograph card to get from a friend of mine. Man, Leafs fans are crazy. 10. My Steve Yzerman rookie card, which I pulled out of a pack of cards about 15 years ago. It is pristine.
Those are my faves - I keep them in a climate controlled room with an alarm. I'd protect them within an inch of my life, so anyone trying to get to them is looking for trouble.

Posted - 08/11/2009 : 06:59:21 My most prized possession is a framed photo of Gilmours behind the net goal on Cujo in the 93 playoffs. I finally got it autographed by Dougie last year when his Kingston Frontenacs were playing the London Knights. Why is this my most prized possession? I am in the picture. Row 10. Dougie's autograph is right beside me. I get goosebumps everytime I look at the picture and remember that goal. I couldn't see it go in but it was the most electrifing moment at a game I have been to. Had no idea I would be in the most popular photo to capture that moment. |

Posted - 08/11/2009 : 06:05:05 Of all my memorabilia, I'd have to say the following are the "most prized"...
1) Wendel Clark Leafs jersey. Autographed, got it signed at his restaurant opening.
2) Mats Sundin Leafs jersey. Autographed, had it signed at a golf tourney a couple years back. Also had his Rookie card signed.
3) Gary Roberts Leafs jersey. Autographed way back in '02. Know his parents lol
4) Jerome Iginla Flames jersey. Signed at the NHL awards last year.
5) Alex Ovechkin East All-stars jersey. Signed at the all-star game.
6) John Tavares Generals jersey. He was parked beside me at GM Centre.
7) Signed rookie cards (Ovechkin, Crosby, Phaneuf, Sundin, Getzlaf)
8) Other non-signed rookie cards (Heatley, Luongo, Spezza, Thornton, Nabokov, Brodeur, Mogilny, Lindros, Modano, Kariya, Pa. Stastny)
9) Doug Gilmour signed Leafs hat. He was in the box beside mine.

Posted - 08/09/2009 : 11:49:17 Hi
I have an autograph stick from the 1997 Detroit Red Wings. My brother got it for my daughter who was in hospital at the time. I also have a couple of pucks signed by Darren McCarthy and Guy LeFleu. Also, a card signed by Guy. A friend was the senior officer for the oldtimers game played locally, he got me into the hall, just ouside the dressing room for autographs. I have a bunch of others, but just on the programme. I also have an old Pit Martin autograph from when I was a kid. |

Posted - 02/13/2009 : 21:27:57 My parents were fortunate to be in Edmonton and get playoff tickets for the Oilers, the game they knocked Detroit out of the playoffs in the Conference finals in 1987. My mother grabbed 2 white Oiler caps, one for each my brother and I, and decided to see if she could get them signed by anyone. She went out to where the players were exiting, passing unknowingly by the Red Wings, (mom didn't follow hockey as much, so unfortunately didn't know Yzeman from Adam ), and found a spot to see what was happening. As she was standing there this guy approached her and asked her if she wanted her hats signed. She said sure, these were for her boys, did he know any of the players? He chuckled and said yes, he should, he was one. It was Kevin Mclleland. Apparently, after signing the hats, he found her so amusing, he went back and told another player to go out and sign her hats, as she was getting the autographs for her sons, but didn't recognize any players. The other player came out and signed the caps, and I would be surprised if anyone other than my brother and I have memorabilia where Kevin Mclleland and Wayne Gretzky are the 2 signatures.
PS. My mom did recognize Gretzky of course ! According to her, he came out of the players entrance and made a bee line over to her to sign the hats and chat before wading into the sea of much younger fans to start signing autographs.
I also have a perosnalized, autographed 8 X 10 of Laraque in Oiler whites, and an Oilers puck with a personalized autograph from Pronger. Didn't meet either one, but my brother in law is a manager for a company that are Oilers sponsors, so he gets me some good stuff |

Posted - 09/04/2008 : 09:40:38 I recently purchased off of a starving college kid a Russian Jersey and a Canadian Jersey both with the World Juniors patch from when Halifax hosted them a few years back. Oh yeah, they were both signed by every member of each team...Ovechkin included. Also purchased from the same kid, a puck signed by Zherdev and a poster signed by Ovechkin. |

Posted - 09/01/2008 : 19:07:14 I was cleaning out a locker room recently and amongst a bunch of junk I found two neat hockey-related things that I had forgotten about. One was a Bobby Orr jigsaw puzzle and the other a menu from Don Cherry's restaurant signed by Don. But it's not so much the signature that I find cool but the CLASSIC message from the coach of the famous TOO MANY MEN ON THE ICE team to a diehard Bruin fan who experienced that nightmare in his formative early high school years. Written on the menu are none other than the words "Sorry Andy!". To me, that is more than kind of cool! I actually framed the really cheap paper menu in plexi-glass back at that time believe it or not (was dating a girl from a framing store at the time - most things I've framed in my life probably occured in that period ). |

Posted - 03/24/2008 : 10:21:46 More news to update you on: my father as recently as Saturday night told me a story that when he was young, Toyota had a promotion that if you test-drived one of their cars, you got free baseball tickets. He and his buddy showed up in a beat up Chevette, with faded jeans and caps and asked to try one out. The salesmen, knowing obviously what their true intent was, kicked them out before they could say 'baseball.'
An hour later, the SAME kids showed up, albeit in suits and, get this, Mike Bossy's convertible.
(The story was, my dad's friend was tight with the Bossys. Mike was at his friend's sister's wedding.)
This time, the manager welcomed them in, let them test drive the best Toyota car at the time (apparently the Supra) and gave them the tickets. All because of Mike Bossy's car!
All aboard the Price bandwagon

Forsberg Jersey Card Signed Mike Richards Card Signed Guy Lafleur Picture Gretzky 801st goal card (this one is funny) Signed Montreal Canadiens Jersey -- by Tucker, Colaiacovo, Corson and Sundin! Bobblehead box to the giveaways from the Corel Centre in I think 2002 (they gave out Chara bobbleheads) signed by everyone but Hossa.
My dad used to have the entire team, the 4 years Cornoyer captained them, all cards and signed, mostly. I think he either sold it or I dont know.
My dad recently (last week) got me a signed Ovechkin away jersey, and a signed Maurice Richard hockey stick! Only problem is, Richard signed a lefty stick... |

Posted - 10/25/2007 : 20:34:23 Talking hockey cards in that other thread inspired me to take a look at my old collection. It would have been way better if my Mom hadn't thrown out a whole bunch of great cards in the '70s (I fired her as Mom for that for a while - still love her though ). But there are some cool cards in there. In no particular order they are:
1. Gretzky Rookie 2. Messier Rookie 3. Neely Rookie (but I traded a Roy rookie for this - not a good move - BUT in my defence the trade occured when Neely had about sixteen goals and counting in the '91 playoffs, just before Ulf changed hockey history) 4. Sakic Rookie 5. Bourque Rookie 6. Bossy Rookie 7. Yzerman Rookie 8. Lafleur Rookie (a bit roughed up though) 9. Lots of early Lemieux and Gretzky cards 10. A bunch of cool Phil Esposito cards
Other interesting rookies include Brett Hull, Gilmour, Shanahan, Kurri, Glen Anderson, Modano, C. Joseph to name a few.
But I think that third year Orr one I mentioned in the other thread is my most prized one. I just love the design of the cards that year (68-69) with the stick on the right side.
Also, I guess I was smart enough to keep some of my old cards from when I was a real young lad in a place that my Mom couldn't get at, as I have those Orr ones with all the trophies from '69-70 and '70-71. Love those black background ones. Phil and Tony, Mikita, the Big M, Gordie, Johnny "Pieface" McKenzie (that has to be one of the best nicknames ever by the way!) and others. I just love some of the old cards from those years - guys like Ratelle, Park, Gump Worsely and so on. In a way I value some of the more basic ones more than some of the superstar ones. The vast majority of all of these came from the pack by the way.
Oh, my Dad has a painting of Rocket Richard by a painter named Jack Reppen that we have been told may be worth something. If anyone has any information about that, or how one could get an appraisal of it, please let me know. I don't think we want to sell it but it's probably a good idea to find out its value.
He also has some cool autographs - Gordie Howe and all the Red Wings from the late 60s for example.
Anyway, thanks, that was fun (haven't looked at them in a while). My wife thinks I am nuts (or is confirming that as she does daily ) but it was very enjoyable indeed.

Posted - 10/24/2007 : 19:42:04 Although he was not as famous as he is now, the fact that Cherry took a few minutes to talk to me made me feel great. The guy who introduced me to him (a friend of my dad's) said, "Hey Don, here's Travis. He's a real up-and-comer." That sort of got his attention, I guess.
So he talked hockey with my 11 year-old self for a couple of minutes. He didn't have to. He was at a sportsman's dinner where he was the guest speaker, and he was busy, but still, I mattered. That's a lifelong memory. |
