Luongo did not play well after the Olympics, and did not have a solid year. should Luongo lose his C? will he lose it?

Seems like there is a bit of a backlash about this right now. Even the paper mentioned that the team needed a new captain. But my opinion is that after a playoff loss, there is lots of finger pointing, and people are looking for whatever excuses seem to be at hand.
To most people it goes like this: 1) Luongo was captain this season. 2) Luongo played poorly this season. 3) As Luongo was captain and played poorly, Luongo should no longer be captain so he can play well again.
And to most people things are just that simple, but the reality is far more complex. Many factors lead to a goaltender's performance, many of which seem to be much more prevalent. (To me workload might be better example)
As for the Canuck's leadership, in the end it was one of the team's all time greatest seasons, but only the members of the Canucks can really tell you how good of a leader he is. Not the media and not the fans.
Should make for an interesting summer debate, though. |

He should. He won't.
He was interviewed locally today and indicated that he thought it was no distraction, and he was proud to be captain. That says that he will not give up the C on his own, and there is no way the team will take it from him - even if they think he should not have it now. No one knows what Gillis and AV think.
I personally never thought that he should be captain - had I been Gillis back in the summer, I would have given it to Mitchell. Perhaps him getting the C was part of the contract negotiations that went on last summer, who knows. Luongo will likely be captain until he thinks he should not be captain. |

In my opinion, giving it to a goaltender (not Luongo specifically), is a bad idea to begin with.
Goaltenders have enough on their plate to begin with. You have many forwards, many D, one #1 Goaltender + a backup.
He already faces the toughest job in the league, with the most pressure. Yet, you have him take the C on top of it?
Also, he's not 'officially' Captain. As the NHL does not allow goalies to be the Captain. So, why bother giving him all of the pressure, without technically, by NHL standards and rules, being the real Captain?
I can think of a couple of goaltenders who should dawn a C. The main one being, Martin Brodeur. Yet, NJ never gave him it. Why, did the Canucks give Luo it?
I believe they should give a C to another player on the squad. Perhaps, they could have 'co-captains.'
Since, Luo is not recignized by the NHL as it is. Luo could still be a C within the team, with a REAL Rep on the ice.

Irv, the talk around town about "why" they gave Luongo the C is a mix between negotiations with him (showing him their commitment and love for him more or less) and Gillis' want/need for thinking outside the box sotospeak?
To me, it's not necessary. I mean, if he's not officially the captain, then why can't he just be a veteran who can help lead, be it on the ice or in the room?
I absolutely agree with you that his workload is a HUGE issue! This isn't just the number of games played. I'm sure many will say "well, Marty's done that for years" or something to that effect but what many don't realize is that he rarely takes breaks or days off from practice as well! He does a lot more practice-wise than most goalies including taking shots on game day and almost daily on ice workouts!
nuxfan, i didn't see/hear that interview. I heard a bit of him in one interview but he only really said "now's not the time to talk about it...." or something along those lines? I personally would like for him to ask the team to relinquish the C from him and assign it to someone else (such as Kesler) but at the same time, i don't think it's as big a distraction as a lot of people think it is? Look at it this way, even without the C, he'd still be regarded as one of the best, he's gonna be the highest paid and he will continue to be asked for interviews and such. Really, would things change all that much if they gave the C to someone else? |
