For those who don't like clicking on links the article basically says that Volchenkov has put his house up for sale and will probabley sign with Washington for around 5 mil per year. As a Sens fan this is terrible news he is probabley one of the best shutdown defencemen in the NHL but the price was simply to high. Oh well now Brian Murray can focus on signing his replacement Andy Sutton

It was bound to happen - Ottawa was very open about the fact that they could not sign him for 5M/year, and his agent has repeatedly said that is what he expects to get for his client as a UFA. I don't think anyone in hockey thought that Volchenkov would be in Ottawa next year, so putting his house up for sale is just part of the exit.
However - I read this article (before it was down, your link is now dead sensfan), and was surprised by some of the comments. If this is true, would this not be tampering on the part of Washington? |

Interesting - I cannot find this article anywhere on the interweb, nor any mention of it anywhere now. Could it have been retracted in some way? The article I read was pretty close to blatant tampering IMO...
I read it first thing this morning, gone this afternoon.
Also - Sutton. I heard that the Sens will be focusing on him now, but its not guaranteed that they can keep him either - money again. I'm not sure what Sutton is looking for, anyone? |

It will be interesting to see how Washington will manage that. If they sign Volchenkov for $5 million, that leaves less than $9 million to sign another 7 players.
Also, what about Fleischmann, Walkers, Morrison, Schultz, and Corvo?? All need to be resigned.
If they go with Volchenkov, that means that virtually all the guys listed above are gone. |

Indeed Beans, it will be interesting.
But, Volchenkov is perhaps exactly what the Capitals need on their backend, and for their team as a whole. A shot blocking, shut down defender.
Now, as for the guys you mentioned...
If they sign Volchenkov, they can let Shultz walk. Volchenkov would take his spot on the top d-pairing anyhow, with Green.
Corvo, is fairly one-dimensional. He's not exceptional defensively. And with Green QB'ing your PowerPlay, and being your #1 Offensive D-man, perhaps Corvo can walk too.
Fleischmann is developing nicely. He's going to be a pretty good 2nd/3rd line offensive talent for some time to come. They could use him, even with all of the offensive talent they have as is. Although, Giroux could step up and take his minutes from the minors. He's about ready. But, I believe they should re-sign Fleischmann.
Scott Walker is a gritty guy. But, i've never been sold on him personally. I believe he's easily replaceable. Unless, he takes near the league minimum.
Morrison (the Defensemen?) or the Center? Either way, both are fairly replaceable guys. Especially, the Defender. With Karl Alzner and John Carlsson ready for full time NHL action. They'll need slots open anyhow.
So, if they play their cards right, I think Washington might be able to fit him in. If, they bring up some youth from their talented farm squad to fill in roles, at the rookie paycheck of $850K (or whatever it is.)
But they will be cutting it tight.
To me, Carlsson can replace Corvo. Alzner can replace Morisson, Giroux can replace Walker, and try to re-sign Fleichsmann.
