the Poni deal is 1yr/3M. Not bad at all - I like to think that he was on the Canucks radar should Raymond have gone south... |

The Rangers did well with Frolov, and I think LA made a great (and cheaper) replacement with Poni. Ponikarovsky is a great guy in the dressing room (real comic from what I hear), hard enough worker, and has some skill. No, he won't use his size like you want him to . . . but he is an awesome depth player for LA, and won't disappear for long stretches like Frolov did (talking more about effort here).
And somehow I forgot Van Ryn was a UFA and already off the books . . . sigh. Tooo much to keep track of, too busy pacing the floor each day as I wait for the Kaberle trade!

Was the hearing just on Tuesday?? It usually take about a week if I recall for an arbitrator to rule. They rarely if every rule right at the hearing. |

Yep it was yesterday, didn't realize it took that long I thought the ruling was usually within 48 hours. |

Pasty I got one for you. According to Twitter and HockeyJunkYard.com and more the Montreal Canadiens are trying to aqquire Bobby Ryan from Anaheim.
The San Jose Sharks have stopped being mentioned in Kaberle rumors.Boston could trade Wheeler for him and L.A has some players that caught Burkes eye.

Beans, i think the final quote from the agent would be "DONE!, Let's hit McDonalds, you're buying!" Then, he'd call White and tell him he got him 3 mil, including the dinner of course.... |

Oh my. As much as I was joking this morning, according to a story I found on canoe, this is actually the real reason for the odd salary. According to Feaster:
"They felt very strongly the number had to have a three at the beginning and we felt very strongly it shouldn't have a three," said assistant GM Jay Feaster. "And the number -- where we ended up -- was within the range, that we did an internal analysis on, we felt the arbitrator could come down with."
So, the range that CGY had was from 0 to 2,999,999.99. And they feel that with this contract, they won the battle. Well done boys! |

New York Islanders trade: Conditional 3rd Round Pick (2011)
Anaheim Ducks trade: (D) James Wisenewski
--
This, on the surface, seems like a very solid deal made by Garth Snow (GM of NYI).
A 3rd Rd Pick for Wisnewski, seems very fair. He had 30 points last season, lead Anaheim in blocked shots, and had almost 130 hits. He adds some toughness and puck-moving ability to the Isles back end.
Great move by Snow, I think.

Steve Yzerman is back at it. Yzerman, Lightning GM, has signed Dominic Moore to a 2-year contract from Free Agency. The deal is worth $2.2M (or $1.1M per year).
Moore played well for Montreal last seasoned, after being acquired. Moore should help add more depth to Tampa Bay.
---
The NHL and NHLPA (Along with Kovalchuk & NJ Devils), have agreed on an arbitrator.
---
Ottawa Senators have re-signed defencemen Chris Campoli to a 1-year contract today. The deal is worth $1.4 Million.
---
Edmonton Oilers have hired former Swiss National Coach Krueger as an associate coach.

I also like the Wisniewski deal for NYI - they have so much cap room, I think they're just sitting back and waiting for teams that need to dump salary, and then picking up players for next to nothing. Sort of like the Canucks getting Erhoff last year from SJ for nearly nothing because the Sharks had to shed salary, Wisniewski is a quality dman with a lot of upside.
ANA still needs dmen, they obviously didn't like Wisniewski @ 3.25M. As much as the Kaberle camp is going to perk up with this news, I still hear persistent rumours that ANA is very interested in Bieksa. |

Hmmm. Beans, I remember you though that they might not resign him? I remember agreeing with your sentiments....
Three headed monster again in net? Or are Oilers hedging their bets in case 'Bulin will be behind 3 walls and one set of bars? |

Antti Niemi has been awarded $2.75 M in arbitration.
--
Seems like a very fair number for a goaltender of his age, ability and potential. He just won the Cup, and going to make under $3M.
Seems like some value.

Devin Setoguchi has re-signed with the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.
The deals figures have not been disclosed, but Nick Kypreos reports the deal to be worth $1.8M.
--
If that is the case, this also seems like a fair deal. I like what Setoguchi brings offensively. He provides solid secondary scoring, so under $2M seems legit to me. Good on both sides.

Tsn is reporting that Chicago will sign Marty Turco to a 1 year 1.2 million dollar deal. This means Chicago will let Neimi walk and not pay him the 2.75 million dollar salary he was awarded through arbitration.

Really?? See, I find this a overpriced deal. In fact, this is the first time I would say that the arbitrator is out to lunch. $2.75 million puts him in the top 25 of paid NHL goalies. He has less than 65 NHL games under his belt and he really wasn't standout on the way to the Cup. He was far from the reason the Blackhawks won, he just didn't make a ton of mistakes. Does that put him ahead of the likes of Dwayne Roloson, Mike Quick, Chris Mason, or Craig Anderson??
He should send a reasonably big piece of his cheque each month to the Chicago Defense because they were a huge part of him getting the raise. Turco will do the exact same thing as Niemi for more than $1.5 million less.
Here's a question: What happens now as Niemi is a UFA. Does he HAVE to get paid at least $2.75 million based on his arbitrator or can a team sign him for anything(including less than that) now that he is a UFA?? |

I'm prettty sure at least the first year has to match or increase the arbitrator's offer and any following years will be between niemi's agent and the respective team to negotiate.
I think you are a bit hard on Niemi Beans, look at the last rookie goalie to win a Stanley Cup Cam Ward. His next contract he got $2.7 and that was in 2007 with a cap cieling in the mid $40 millions. Adjusted for inflation I think the arbitrator was bang on. If he had of came down with an awrard higher than $3 than I htink think the Hawks would have been right to walk away but I think they are making a mistake here. If there is one position on the ice you don't go into a season with question marks it's goaltending.
If you are the San Jose Sharks don't you now jump all over this guy???

So, essentially, Niemi is a free agent, unless Chicago were to decide to match the contract, but why would they, as they have signed Turco? |

I think Chicago has like 48 hours to trade him or he becomes a UFA

I will try off the top of my head Ladd, Byfuglien, Versteeg, Sopel, Burish, Eager, Fraser and Niemi. I'm, sure there is more but those are the ones I can remember.

i'm 99% sure no he does not have to get his 2,75... and really Neimi hasn't even proved he is a NHL Goalie yet,, i know im gonna get jumped all over for saying this, but really he hasn't as beans said he hasn't even played as many games in the NHL as Marty Brodeur wins in a single season,,, (i bit exagerated i know) and he is getting half of Marty's salary, I mean (again don't jump all over me) but there are 30 some goalies in the league i would take ahead of this guy (again slightly exagerated) how many one hit wonder goalies do we see have one good year than hang on for a couple more than play in europ or quit,,,, Robert Esch, David Aebisher guys like this come to mind when i think of Neimi,,, this was 200% the right call by Chi Marty Turco for less money infront of chi's d will definetly be back to the 35 plus win goalie we have seen in the past,, Truco is the real deal Neimi COULD ver well be in the khl or sweedish elite league in 2 years,,

Of note around the CHI decision to walk away from Niemi - capgeek lists Huet as a non-roster player for Chicago now. This give CHI the caproom that they need, they are now 3M under the cap with 5 players left to sign - still tight, but manageable.
Does anyone know what will happen to Huet? Nothing was mentioned on any of the sports stations about an announced decision for his future, but TSN did speculate that he'll have to go to the minors. Removing him as a roster player after all this time would signify that CHI has made some sort of decision about him. |
