That's the thing though - the playoffs just featured two inexperienced, average goalies . . . and San Jose sees a risk like Greiss - cheap, looks great so far but a big risk to consider as a starter yet - as a possibility for a deep team.

And Nabbie . . . he might be getting that feeling that, he's in his prime, and his chance might be slipping by him, staying on this team that will never win with Thornton and a talented crew. It's his big free agency, at his prime after a great season with the second best team record=wise . . . he won't command better dollars than right now - ever again. That's my prediction, anyways.

I don't really know, it's just guesses . . . I am not close to the Sharks. But I think Nabakov will look hard at other offers, and those other offers will be better.

some further rumours, or additions to already mentioned rumours:

- Horton is likely to be traded before July1 (when his no-trade clause kicks in), and apparently BUF are highly interested, and may dangle Connoly or Roy in return. The canucks boards are all a-twitter about possible trades to bring him here (Bernier/Beiksa/Raymond seems to be the consensus)

- lots of chatter on the Canucks forum that Hamhuis to VAN is a done deal. He's from here, he has a home here, he has expressed an interest to be here, and we have 4M to chuck at a desirable dman for 3-4 years. Sounds like a match made in heaven

- Mason Raymond - sources say that the Canucks are trying to package him up to FLA for the 3rd overall pick (obviously not straight up). Apparently they don't think that they're going to be able to afford Raymond after his arbitration hearing this summer, and want to get something for him now. Interest in Raymond as an RFA is high.

- Canucks apparently interested in Versteeg. Depends on the price I guess. Perhaps this is the plan b if we lose Raymond...

- FLA will not look to trade Vokoun this summer

- Brendan Morrison likely heading back to NJD. Back where it all began...

And now for the blockbuster that I came across on the Canucks board...I have no idea how true this rumour might be...

To VAN: Lucic, 2nd overall draft pick, another later round pick

To BOS: Grabner and Hodgson

As a Canucks fan, I would love this deal. I would also be very surprised to see it happen - why would BOS be thinking of trading Lucic and the second overall pick?

nuxfan - word from Boston is, there is absolutely no way they trade their second pick. They want value for trading away Kessel, and it won't get any better than this year's pick.

Cam Neely is now the president of the Bruins franchise, and he was on Toronto radio last afternoon . . . and he made this clear.

And who isn't interested in some of the very juicy parts of the Blackhawks juggernaut? Versteeg, Sharp, these guys will get shopped around for sure. Would love Sharp on my team. I know they'll be looking for something in return with almost no cap hit, so picks or fringe players in return . . . but in their situation, how much they actually get back should be a huge concern for Hawks fans. Well, I guess it was worth it, right?

Slozo, I had thought the same - perhaps the rumour was getting mixed up with the drafts, and they really mean next years first round pick, I'm not sure. If that is the case, then this deal suddenly doesn't seem as creazy. I'd love a shot to get Lucic on the Canucks, but I'd ideally be looking to trade at least some salary back the other way.

I suspect the Hawks management has been getting a ton of calls for many of their players. Versteeg was not at the top of my list - I too would rather see Sharp in a Canucks uniform - but its worth taking a look at depending on the price.

I really hope the Canucks don't land Versteeg, just never been a big fan. Would LOVE to see Sharp here but i think the money might be too much.

The Lucic deal i could see happening IF Hodgson's back didn't act up and it was a year ago (after he'd come off a great WJC tournament). Now, it's unlikely.

The Savard / Wheeler for the 4th pick is very intriguing. I wonder who the Bruins covet in that spot? Safe to say, they'll likely get Seuguin and already have Bergeron, so that makes Savard and his contract quite expendible?

Would love to see the Canucks get Horton and/or Weiss. Not sure what it'd take and as much as i've been impressed with Raymond's development, see ya later.....

The Burrows talk is very interesting and i still believe some are clouded by their opinion of him as a "douche" and therefore undervalue his worth. Without the Sedins i see him as a 20-25 goal scorer with a HUGE boost to any teams PK!

I don't understand how the leafs aren't interested in getting kovalchuk...that's ridiculous. the guy is an elite player that can put the puck in the net in my opinion i would rather have kovy than kessel i mean having both would be ideal but how can brian burke not want this guy he is amazing, i think if he is interested in the leafs they should go after him with a huge contract. what do they have to lose it's not like they have even been to the playoffs the past few years with kessel phaneuf kovalchuk, kadri, bozak and kulemin and schenn the team would be a lot better looking with kovalchuk on the roster. what team wouldnt want this guy????

Pretty good pick up for the Devil's. Arnott loved playing in Jersey, and wanted to go back there since moving from NJ. He's still a depth Center, who can produce some points. Perhaps even, more so playing somewhere he loves.

--

As for Philly, if they can sign Hamhuis, it's a great pick up for them. Pronger, Carle, Timmonen, Hamhuis, etc.. on the back end. Wow.

A little less work for Pronger with Hamhuis joining the blue line, should help both Pronger and the team as a whole. Pronger having to play less, is great for the Flyers. As, he'll be more rested and energized during his regular ice time.

So are the Preds looking to rebuild after a moderate playoff season? This team looked like they were only going to get better thanks to Pekka Rinne, who seems to get better every game...

I mean, Hamhuis, I can see that deal...but dealing the Captain...really? It's not like this team was bad, they were a solid balanced team...

I think Nashville is going to stink it up after these deals . . . it sure does look like a rebuild. Which, inevitably, could spell disaster for Nashville after this year (see: Winnipeg, Hamilton, Quebec City, or heaven forbid Kansas City). Weird trade, considering that if you are rebuilding, don't you want a solid young defenceman?

Good for NJ obviously, Arnott is a solid dressing room guy who still has plenty left in the tank, and is a big physical center, exactly what they need. It's also a good indication that they don't re-sign Kovalchuk, in my mind. Hamhuis will fit in perfectly in Philly as well . . . but don't look for him to light it up there points-wise.

Good luck in your second full season, Hornqvist, you are now the man! (gulp)

Was Halak the only potential UFA goalie??

What about now that St. Louis picked up Halak?? Chris Mason anyone?? Biron, Ellis, Emery, Niittymaki, Turco??? The FA goalie crop is not deep, but there definitely are some jewels in the group.

I am not saying that Nabokov is completely done, but I think the chances are so slim that he resigns in SJ I would be willing to bet on it. He's coming off a $6 million/ year contract and he is 35 years old. Honestly speaking, 5 more years is a stretch to say the least. I would suggest 3ish max. So what kind of pay cut is Nabokov willing to take??? He's not getting $6 million again from SJ knowing they have to sign Marleau, Pavalski, Setogouchi this season and Joe Thornton is a UFA next season. It simply too much.

Couple this with Nabokov being a goalie that will often not lose a play off series but is has been at least 4 seasons removed from the last time he won a series. It's more than likely time for a new direction in goal.

And if we listened to everything we hear on fan sites, there would have been a deal for Horcoff, and Moreau for the 2nd overall pick and Edmonton would be getting Hall and Seugin!!!

Proof of this is that not only Vancouver fan sites but also many reputable publications had the rumors of Hamhuis going to the Cancucks all but done. Where did he end up???

We can agree on one thing, Beans - we have recently gotten a lot of these deals happening "out of the blue". As Leafs fans know, we had no warning on any of the major deals that happened last year (including the departure of Toskala and Blake), and once again we are greeted with what I would consider big moves - NJ getting Arnott and Philly getting Hamhuis - with no talk about either beforehand in the media.

These days, if it's quiet, it means something is about to happen!

Furthermore, if it's 'reported' as close to happening, something completely different is going to happen. As recently as last summer, Bouwmeester was going anywhere and everywhere other than Calgary, Ilya "The Situation" Kovalchuk was not pictured anywhere near the Jersey Shore, and Dion Phaneuf was never talked about being a Leaf. Heck, just last week the goalie that everyone 'knew" was staying in Montreal ended up in St. Louis.

Ultimately, neither us nor the hockey world really has a sniff of what is going on behind the scenes within the NHL. We can act like we have a clue, but if we get one right it is more about luck than it is skill.

But I heard Byfuglien is on his way out of town. (Cap Issues)

Yeah, let's talk Blackhawks. Who is potentially on the trading block? At some point, players of good quality are leaving here . . .

Hossa is staying - contract too expensive, too long.
Kane and Toews and Keith and Seabrook are the core, staying.
Huet . . . might be bought out, or put out on waivers, but no one will take him. Too many decent goalies on the market.
Campbell - staying, too expensive to trade, although there could be some sucker out there, but who?

Now we get to the nitty gritty.

Sharp (3.9m) - available, I would think.
Versteeg (3.08m) - also available, I would think.
Byfuglien (3m)- available, I would think.

Why oh why do I think that? Because folks, the Hawks have totally snookered themselves into a cap crunch, and frankly, they may actually have to deal all three of these very valuable pieces . . . and even then, it doesn't put them in the safety zone under the cap!

But constrained as they are, what will/could they get for each of these three, and where might they move? Thoughts, comments?

My thinking is Sharp and Versteeg are gone for sure, and that the Hawks will try their absolute hardest to keep Byfuglien - still relatively cheap for what he brings to the table, and considering his contribution to the cup win. He is a key cog in that motor.

The Hawks will want picks for each, but I am actually thinking they will get underpaid, maybe only getting a second rounder and another pick for each, including Sharp, the more valuable of the two. Who wants to deal picks for these guys?

I'd take sharp or buff well before i made a move for versteeg for my team. i am hoping the leafs try and land one of them but i would think sharp will be gone before buff. i'd be happy with either of them in a leafs uniform...or both.

honestly, he's ended up nowhere - its just a different team that now has the right to negotiate with a pending UFA. A trade to Phili was fully out of his control. I'm sure Phili will negotiate with him and see what they can do, but Phili is not exactly swimming in cap space either - 8M to sign 6 players, they'd be hard pressed to commit half of that to a single player. Although I must say, if he does sign in Phili that will be quite a formidable defense.

I still think there is a good chance that Hamhuis goes to UFA.

oh, is now a good time to talk about the hawks cap woes? can i chime in without appearing to be biased?

Simply put, I think anyone not named Niemi, Keith, Toews, Kane, or Hossa is available for the right price, and in some cases any price. In the cases of Huet and Campbell they have some hard choices to make - for a team to take on either of those contracts, in exchange for prospects and no salary going the other way is highly unlikely. Something tells me they are going to have to bury Huet in the minors, and hope they can unload Campbell (who is a pretty good player but just overpaid) while taking on as little as possible in return.

They will likely get a lot of interest in players like Sharp (the Hawks have said they have no intention of trading Sharp, but fact is they may have to), Byfuglien, Ladd, Versteeg, Brower - and I think they could offload any of them for prospects and very little salary in return.

I think Seabrook is an interesting case - he's under contract for next year @ 3.5M but will be RFA after that. He would almost certainly command a raise to 4.5M, the Hawks may be forced to deal him before the end of next year - despite the fact that they very likely do not want to.

fresh off the wire @ TSN - Horton has been traded to Boston, players going the other way unknown right now. Apparently it is Horton + 1 going to Bos in return for 1 player (must be someone significant)

Boston is going to be great once again next year I think.

According to TSN the Hawks consider Sharp a part of the core and is not available, and that RFA Andrew Laad is being shopped as with two stanley cup rings and decent 3rd liner checker stats he will get more than hes worth. and apprently the NUcks are working hard to obtain his services which is weird since he and Kesler went at it verbally for much of the season,, with kesler if i do recall calling Laad "a coward" and a :marginal NHLer"

Well, it seems the Bruins have found a scoring Winger. He may play well with a guy like Savard, centering him.

The Bruins still have 2nd overall pick, so they will have added either Seguin/Hall & Horton to the lineup next year, this team is starting to look fairly deep.

Highly, highly unlikely. I don't think you could tell me a single situation where the rights to a players were traded and the player still went UFA.

These GM's are not stupid. As much as you might think that the GM's and agents are not already talking, they are. No way Philly trades a roster players and a draft pick for a guy they are not nearly 100% sure they are going to sign.

I think that a fan blog page for the team in question is far from reputable. How about a legitimate sports site (TSN, CBS, CBC, NHL, etc) or a legitimate newspaper??

Good Luck.

Oftentimes these fan blogs get the story first, especially blogs on SBNation. They do get their stories from their respective newspapers, so I'm sure that the Sharks blog is a little more knowledgeable since they read the San Jose papers and we don't.

I wouln't be suprised to se Nabby stay, especially since the Halak trade. San Jose would be foolish to let Thomas Greiss start next season.

Looks like those Fan sites were dead on, hey??? I take the word of Doug Wilson over the fans any day.

On a side note, I really like what Tallon has done already. Horton apparently wanted out, and DT picks up a solid offence contributor in Wideman AND the 15th overall pick! FLA has 5 of the top 50 picks.

FLA in 2-4 years is what Chicago is today. Tallon may be the best up and coming GM in the NHL today.

Agree with your assesment of Tallon and the Panthers, however I also like the direction the Bruins are takeing too. Horton is a great pickup for them and they can afford to part with their pick this year and next years too because of the Kessel trade.

they have alot to play with ie draft picks and players like Thomas Ryder and even Bergeron or Krecji if they draft Seguin with thier pick. Lots of options come trade deadline day next year if they so choose.

Highly, highly unlikely. I don't think you could tell me a single situation where the rights to a players were traded and the player still went UFA.

2002 - Theo Fleury's rights were acquired by SJ in June 2002, he eventually signed with Chicago

2002 - TO trades rights to Cujo to Calgary in June. Cujo signed with Detroit as a UFA

2002 - Dallas trades rights to Belfour to Nashville, Belfour signs as UFA with Toronto

2008 - Wild trade rights to Brian Rolston to TB, Rolston signs as a UFA with NJD

I ignored RFA rights being traded, as its easier to sign those players because they have nowhere to go. I also didn't include 2010. I was able to find about 10 trades involving soon-to-be UFA rights being traded to other teams, so close to half of them have signed with the team that got their rights. I'm sure there are more, this is a hard stat to find.

Anyhoo, I'm not saying that Phili won't sign Hamhius before he goes UFA, just that nothing has really changed for Hamhuis except the team his agent is negotiating with. I don't think Phili can sign him for what he would get on the market (some team will offer him 4M/year on a long-term deal I think), so can they play the "chance to get a cup" card and lock him up? Or do they offer him market and trade one of their forwards (Carter and Gagne have been brought up in other threads as likely-to-move) to make room?

Hamhuis has to be thinking that this is his chance to make a big payday as well as a UFA - he may not get another chance. We'll see what happens.

Ha! And who wouldn't listen to Beans and slozo . . . so Nabakov is out of San Jose.

Great pick-up for Boston, tough luck for Habs, Buds, Sabres, Sens. sigh. The problem with our division is, there's too much history, rivalry and hockey love in these towns, and when one or two start building good teams, the others want to build great teams. Boston is starting to look deep indeed, I really hope Krejci doesn't start reaching potential!

Wideman is a great young d-man, hard to see a clear winner in the deal.

Who's next, and why do I get the feeling this is the tip of the iceberg?
