David backes has signed a 5 year / $22.5 m contract with the blues. In fourteen games, he has six points with the team. Personally I think it's a great deal. I like backes a lot and he is exciting to watch ! He will be a addition to the team for the next few years.

I don't see a lot of Backes, but i know the Canucks have been quite interested in the past. 4 Million + per year seems like a lot but he must bring more to the table than i've witnessed? 4 million just isn't what it used to be i guess? |

yeah, I'm with you Alex - I'm not sure if 4.25M is overpaying for Backes. 4.25/year seems high - however, if you look at other Backes-like players:
- Lucic is at 4M with nearly identical stat profile and 2 years less service. - Rene Borque is at 3.33M, but that was signed 2 years ago. - Mike Fisher is @ 4.2M, with the same points and less PIM - Ryan Clowe, 3.625, Pavelski, 4M - etc etc
So maybe this isn't so crazy. I know that STL covets Backes, and VAN has been very interested in him in years past, there is obviously high hope that he will develop into that power forward good for 30g/70pts a year.

I agree with Nux, I totally see Backes develloping into a 30 goal, 70 point guy.
There was once a license plate in Toronto that abbreviated "Go Leafs" it read "Golfs". |

I think this smells a lot like a Kevin Lowe deal. Let's give a guy we THINK will do something in the future a huge pile of money. That way, if he does turn out to be great, I will look like a genius.
Backes had a single 30 goal season in 4 years and last season had 48 points. He's on pace this year for about 40 points.
Maybe I am old school, but $4 million should get more than 40-50 points unless there is a near certain 30+ goals which there is not.
I think I might just be getting old. |

Beans:
I do agree with you that $4M should gain you a little more than a 40-50 point guy.
However, you are getting old. LOL. In today's NHL, sadly, $4M does not get you what it used to. Even, 6 years ago.
In some cases now, you have to pay on potential. I don't believe in it, personally, but sadly, you do. Or you'll lose out, and most GM's, don't want to look like a "fool", if a young player who they have high hopes for, does turn out, and they let him walk.
But I will say this,
Backes does bring a lot more than just offensive production to the table. Backes is a good two-way player, who plays a hard, physical game. So add that in to 25-30 goals, and, I guess you have your $4M dollar man.

Beans - I too thought of Penner here, you're right it smells the same. I suspect STL wanted to lock him up longer term, hoping that in year 2-3 this contract looks like a deal. If he does develop into that 30g/70pt power forward that STL wants, his next contract will not be for 4M
Beans - I also agree that you are probably getting old . Irvine is right, 4M doesn't get you what it used to. |
