From the article:

Nothing will surprise me with this group at all,” Renney said on Friday. “It won’t surprise me when we make the playoffs. The biggest surprise at all might be if we don’t
Improved from last year, yes. Playoffs...well, I would certainly be surprised even if Renney isn't.
Anyone? Anyone?

Bold statement for the west. The oilers are still fairly far out. I'm still optimistic though, and renney is a little to much so, or he's just trying to pump up the boys.

Making the playoffs would be, in my opinion, the dumbest thing the Oilers can do. This team is still missing at least 2-3 key pieces for them to be contenders(in 2-3 years) and that is found through the draft.
No, miss the playoffs. Please. Add in that 6'4"-205 lbs 18 yr old centre to fill the gap between Hall and Eberle. Trade Hemsky for picks if possible and then look hard on the UFA/RFA/draft side for a talented puck moving defensemen (Kaberle??) and have a look out for a goalie that will take Khabibulin's place in 3 years.
Making the playoffs this season will put the rebuild at least one year if not two years off.
Any fan who wants the Oilers to make the playoffs this season does not see the forest for the trees and does not want to see a Cup back in Edmonton. They are still not good enough and need more early picks to get there.
Lose this year, Cup in 3ish years. Win this year, Cup will not be here until after the next rebuild. |

agreed Beans - it is in the Oiler's best interests, as a team, to continue to finish near the bottom so they can get some picks. I guess Renney has to do what he can for the fan base, not every fan takes the long view like you seem to do, and the Oil have to make sure they continue filling seats and getting sponsors.
But I'd love to see them try to make the playoffs - if only to have them miss out on those picks. |

Lol nice optimism Nuxfan & it sure sounds like Beans wants the oilers to bottom out for Couturier.
I have to agree with Beans though in order for Edmonton to compete for a while they are still a couple players away.
Hey Beans here's a proposal for you rather then bottoming out for the high draft pick. Trade Hemsky & Penner to New Jersey for Parise and a young dman and the trade can only be completed upon Parise's agreement of a long term contract. This way you get a solid two way player who can play centre and his contract would nullify Penners & Hemsky.
What are your thoughts?

Size. The Oilers a currently missing a ton of size and moving Penner's 245lbs out for a player that is 5'11" and 195lbs is not a good move. That Couterier kid is already bigger than that. Furthermore, Hall is the scorer. A team does not need 2-40 goal players on one line. Not like it is a bad thing, but the big centre is more important. Not everone can have a line of Thornton, Heatley, and Marleau.
Hemsky and Penner for Getzlaf or Staal or Kopitar or (puke) Kesler and I am cool. The key piece to the puzzle for the Oilers is a large centre. Not a small left winger. And as the large centre currently playing in the NHL commands top dollar, the smart move is draft him if possible.
Compete and don't tank obviously, but finish low and pick up Couterier is the smart choice. |

Chicago was 2 points out of the playoffs kane and toews rookie year. If the oilers make the playoffs then clearly the talent we have is good enough to win in 3 or so years without couturtier or whoever |

Kane and Toews are just two pieces of the 10ish that helps the Hawks win. The Oilers do not have any defensemen other than Whitney that could be compared to Keith, Seabrook, or Cambell, they do not have secondary scoring with the comparable to Hossa or Sharp, and they do not have size and skill the comparable to Byfuglien.
Great. The Oilers can match up 2 players. Where is the rest coming from.
The Oilers are only about 1/3 of the way to a contender. It's not bashing them, it's looking objectively. |

You are right, but, since when do the NYI do anything right? Maybe they pick someone else and screw it up like they seem to always do. Here's to hoping! |

If the Bruins get Couterier...Burke should crawl into a hole !!!
No - body likes to see their team lose but if the Oilers were to receive a ( 1st ) top pick along with what they have, what a boost that would give their hockey team in 2 - 3 years time.
I`m not a kaberle fan Beans but i will agree that Kaberle sending in Hall and Eberle with those long soft passes would be an explosive offensive in Edmonton...no doubt about it. |
