This guy could be a top 6 in alot of teams but due to the depth of the flyers, he simply does not fit in.

What do you think will happen with this kid? (picked 4th overall in 2003)

I agree - he has great skill and alot of speed, most teams would be lucky to have him. I don't think he will be on waivers for long..

this move doesn't help them with keeping Leino - Zherdev would have been UFA at the end of this season and his salary would be off the book next year anyway.

PHI still only have 1.8M to sign 6 players for 11/12 - one of which is still Leino

I am puzzled, frankly . . . but I guess the report was true that when Philly shopped him, there were no serious takers.

I guess that means Burke doesn't like him either, since he surely would have been offered in the Versteeg deal, no? It's a head scratcher, since I would have gladly taken Zherdev and a low round throw-in for Versteeg . . . but Burke I guess wanteda 1st rounder specifically for more dealing I suppose.

I mean, we are talking about a one year removed 60 point guy, played top line in Columbus . . . I really don't get it how Philly couldn't get ANYTHING for him.

Weird.

Have fun playing for the Islanders, Zherdev! lol

This is a bit of a puzzler for me too. I watch alot of Flyers games and Zherdev did not look bad...looked great on occassion. Scored a number of goals but just couldn't seem to find the consistency to crack the line up. Surely some team could use a pure goal scorer???

Zherdev has always been plagued with the stygma of Russian players. That being unbelievable skill and talent, zero work ethic. When he felt like playing he was amazing but when he didn't feel like playing he was a waste of space on the ice.

Today's NHL commands a level of work ethic and Zherdev just doesn't have it. He was brought by to the NHL as an experiement and it looks like it failed.

But I do agree he can help some teams out there. He's on pace for 22 goals playing 3rd line minutes so one has to think someone will pick him up for a few bucks.

I liked Zherdev when he was on the Rangers. As already stated, a supremely talented player who can be a a forced when motivated. He's a very inconsistent player in that he can be dominant offensively at times, and then he'll follow up his hot streaks with droughts of un-inspired play where he's invisible on many nights. He's signed for $2 million this season, so really he's only owed in the $500k range for the remainder of the season, so there might be some suitors. He might even be a decent fit with a non-playoff team such as the Islanders...unless of course instead of scoring goals, they have their goals set more on remaining in the bottom 5 to ensure a lottery pick (currently 28th, only 5 points up on Edmonton).

Why would Philly drop this guy? is he not cracking the lineup every night? This puzzels me because they're only saving roughly 500k on the cap this year so they dont really create alot of room for a big move and hes a good hockey player that can jump into your top 2 lines if you run into injuries in the playoffs. Really doesn't make any sense to me at this point.

I don't think Zherdev has played since the Flyers acquired Kris Versteeg. I agree that it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing for the Flyers to have a proven 25 goal scorer waiting in the wings in case they run into injury troubles in the playoffs. I'm not sure how tight the Flyers are against the cap right now though...while whatevers left on Zherdev's $2 million cap hit may not seem like much, in a way it is i suppose if he's not in the Flyers plans. Or maybe they are trying to create a bit of space so that they can make another move.

Either way, i'm glad they went this route. Zherdev is too talented a player to be sitting in the press box every night. Hopefully someone picks him up.
