I know that Kovalev is having an off year, but only a 7th round pick? That is a surprising lack of return value IMO.
This move had been rumoured for the last little while. They're stockpiling all these scoring wingers, now all they need is a top centre and they're good to go. |

Lowball could be just a rental? He has a pretty brutal contract. Ya, just looked it up, he got 2 yrs @ 10 million. Got to be a rental as Kovalev is UFA July 1st and i'd guess goes off into the sunset after this season or takes a dramatic paycut with another team next season. |

Absolutely a rental. No doubt about it. He is a shadow of his former self but will help Pitt on the PP if he is motivated.
He will not be in either Ottawa or Pitt come July. My bet is the KHL. |

See, this is what the new economic landscape of the NHL has done, reduced Kovalev to a 7th round pick (ie. A BAG OF PUCKS!). Yeah, he was having a crappy, unmotivated season, for sure . . . but 14 goals and 13 assists with his talent and experience, having just played on one of the crappiest teams in the league - you'd like an NHL where a guy like that is worth more than a 7th rounder.
So the Pens added Neal, and now Kovalev . . . very nicely done, I think, and it just added a lot of skill to a team without Malkin and a soon to return Crosby.
I can't remember, but did Kovalev ever play with Crosby? He actually might be a great fit with him . . . he can score and pass, is a smart enough player to be in the right spot when he is motivated . . . but who knows with Alex.

You might hate him and his work ethic or lack thereof, but to claim it's too much to pay (7th rounder) for a guy who "can" be a game changer still, who could mesh with arguably the best player in the game today, is simply showing your hockey knowlege (or lack thereof) |

And to add to that Alex, People forget Kovalev was getting over a torn MCL, and reports are that he was looking better and better as the season progressed.
He still has game, in my opinion . . . and would not look out of place on a top line.

Couldn't agree more. To take on that salary for a rental of his potential / calibre is not tough! I'm surprised they couldn't have gotten a little more for him! He's put up good numbers lately and going to a legitimate contender, one which has made other recent moves to strengthen their run, might just be enough to motivate this guy for one last run! Being in Ott couldn't have been motivational for him, that's for sure! |

Slozo...no they've never played together. Kovalev was traded to the Rangers at the 02/03 deadline...Crosby didn't join the Pens until the 5/06 season.
I have to admit, never been a big Alex Kovalev fan, but i really like this pick up by the Penguins. While he's 37 years old now & has slown down considerably, he can still be a game changer & is playing by far his best hockey as a Senator right now (6 goals in last 10 games). I think he'll be motivated not only returning to Pittsbrugh, the city where he enjoyed his most (individual) success, but also perhaps his best opportunity since 1994 to win a Stanley Cup. When Crosby does return, and hopefully he is able to come back this season, he's going to find himself surrounded with much more talented wingers. It'd be interesting to see what a Neal-Crosby-Kovalev line could do. Hopefully we get to find out (ie a Crosby return, as well as Bylsma giving it a shot. Definitely worth giving up a 7th rounder for IMO. There's also a chance it turns into a 6th depending on how many games he plays/if the Pens win around in the p/o. |

Its a conditional 7th rounder. If Pittsburgh wins the first round of the playoffs and Kovalev plays in at least fifty percent of the games, the pick becomes a sixth-round selection. Its likely that Pittsburgh can make it through one round so odds are it will be a 6th round pick. I am not saying that is much better! |

Kovalev is a good (rental) addition for the Pens. There is another talented winger for them.

I am sorry but a good rental player is not correct for a 7th rounder. Kovalev has some sweet hands and has the ability to be a game changer especially when all the attention will be on other guys. For a 7th round pick that 99% likely will never see the nhl is a stellar pick up for the pens and clearly just a cap move by the sens. Yes kovalev is known to show up about once a month but when he does he can put on a show. For that i will gladly pay a bag of pucks for the price of admission |

Kovalev did have a NMC, that probably factored in to what they got in return. He probably only authorized a deal to a couple of teams, if not just the one. |
