This was touched briefly on in a previous thread but figured I'd bring it up in a separate topic after another article surfaced today about players thoughts on moving to Winnipeg.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=363238
I truly hope that Winnipeg gets their team back and that it happens sooner rather than later, but I feel badly for the city having to endure their name being taken through the mud. If the move happens, I wonder how many players will jump ship or put up a huge stink about moving. Winnipeg may have a bit of difficulty in the first year or two because of this until they reestablish themselves, I hope their fans are okay with that.
Edit: For some reason I can't get this to appear on the home page forum section. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong?

You can't get it to appear on the front page cuz the topic isn't popular enough. I've been there Pushrod.

I can understand that Kesler, but it doesn't make sense because many other topics appear on the home page right when they are initiated with no replies or views. If that's the way it is though, that's fine, I just wanted to make sure I didn't make a misstep along the way that made it appear in the wrong area. Not a big deal.
Ah. there it is now. I guess you were right Kesler! Apparently I'm easily confused this weekend. |

Frankly, suck it up. Edmonton has been dealing with the same kind of crap for decades and no one complains about it here! Face it, living in Winnipeg in the winter sucks. Living in Edmonton in the winter sucks. For many, neither City is cosmopolitan enough or maybe too blue collar.
In the end, Winnipeg lost their team because no one stepped up. Edmonton kept their team because a number of people did step up. I want to see a team in Winnipeg because I think it's a better option an virtually any other place. But the fact they could not keep their team viable is a concern for the long term. The American dollar is not going to be at par forever. |

Fair enough. Being an Edmontonian I sympathize with them, that's all. Since some players have had the guts to come out and actually say it, I'm guessing that it represents the majority view in the dressing room. It will be interesting to see what happens if the move takes place. It may take a bit of a rebuild early on, so I would hope the fans stick it out, otherwise it would look pretty bad and may jeopardize any other future moves to Canada..... |

there are a few teams that get beat up for one thing or another in the hockey world - EDM and WIN certainly for hard winters and lack of size/culture. VAN and COL still gets beat up for having a difficult travel schedule. Teams that do badly (NYI, ATL, FLA) have trouble because the teams aren't good enough and players don't think they'll ever win. TOR has too much pressure. French players don't like playing in MTL because of the added pressure. The list goes on.
WIN will be able to field a team regardless - the salary cap world is the great equalizer, and if players want to play, they either have to take cuts to play in favourable cities or take market to play in cities they don't necessarily like. WIN may have to overpay on a few contracts or give longer terms, and it sounds like they won't have Bryzgalov next year (perhaps this is why PHX was not able to sign him to an extension), but they'll get players. WIN/PHX is also a pretty good team, so they'll attract players that think they have a shot at winning too. |

I hated the Jets when they were here the first time around, but being much younger then I had less appreciation for Canadian Hockey teams as a whole than I do now ( except for Toronto, no appreciation, no respect...). Now as an adult of course I want more Canadian hockey teams. Bring back the Jets ( but can we somehow keep the coyotes - I like their jerseys). Bring back the Nordiquse. Heck, I think even Halifax would be able to support a team with the hockey interest hear in eastern canada. The Halifax population may not seem large enough to support an NHL franchise, but with interest from all of the surrounding communities I think it could fly. Doesn't matter though, it'll never happen. |

I'm pretty sure that Doan will be fine with it, maybe guys like Whitney, Aucoin, Jovanovski, you know, older guys.
There was once a license plate in Toronto that abbreviated "Go Leafs" it read "Golfs". |

I'd actually think the exact opposite. I'd guess the older guys are quite settled where they are with families, enjoying the weather, etc. Amongst one of the guys who originally said he didn't want to go he alluded to players who were there before that didn't want to go back. Since Doan is one of the few, if not the only, original Jet you'd have to assume it was him. It's easier for the younger guys to pick up and move and they may enjoy being higher profile celebrities in the community like they would get in the Canadian market. The more restrictive nature of their contracts also gives them less choice in the matter anyways. |

yeah, I also think the older guys would be less likely to move up to Winnipeg. Doan would, but he is the only Coyote that also played in Winnipeg, and he's a quality person as well, he'll likely retire a Coyote/Jet.
I heard from a friend that if they do move back, they cannot be the "Winnipeg Jets", apparently there are legal reasons? The speculation was that they'd be the "Manitoba Jets", or change the Jets entirely. I can't imagine a team in Winnipeg not called the Jets... |

From what i understand, the league owns the rights to the Jets name. Not sure how that works but i assume the league owned the team in the end, prior to the move to Phoenix and therefore would retain the rights to the name? Not sure if that's accurate, in fact, i don't even remember if the league took over the team?
Heard there was a chance they'd remain the Coyotes (Winnipeg does have Coyotes) but wouldn't the league own those rights too? Either way, wouldn't the league be willing to give up either name? |

I thought they could be the Jets as long as it was the Phoenix franchise going there, since they are till technically the same franchise. If it was any other team relocating, they would have to adopt another name. I want them to be Jets. |

I believe that Jets is fine. However, "Winnipeg Jets" - specifically the Winnipeg portion - is not. I don't know why though - perhaps someone in Winnipeg could shed some light? |

I was just reffering to guys who I know said they would. I wouldn't doubt Doan would like to come back. Maybe someone like Whitney would to be closer to family. I couldnt see too many of the older guys wanting it though. They probably enjoy the obscurity while playing the game they love.
