The Flyers are down 3-0 after the 1st period of game six, facing elimination if they lose.
While the goaltending (Leighton) in the first period was not good, the Flyers power play has suffered too.
The Flyers are now 2-for-30 on the power play at this point in the series! (And the absence of Pronger is a big reason why.)
To understand how bad 2-for-30 is, this works out to two goals in 60 minutes of play. Could you imagine playing 5-on-4 for the entire 60 minutes of a hockey game, and only scoring two goals?!? You don't win too many hockey games scoring two goals the whole game,
Gotta get back to the game. The second period has just started, and no big surprise - the Flyers have made a goaltending change. If the Flyers expect to stay alive, Boucher needs to stand on his head, and the Flyers need to find a way to score on the power play!

Goalies also have a lot to do with teams PP numbers....shooting on Miller game after game surely will not boost team numbers. |

Yeah, that stat is just a stat, and in a 7 game series all against the same team . . . the goalie and defence you are playing against has just as much to do with it as your own pp.
What a whale of a game today though, and Philly did get a pp goal if I remember, and ended up scraping out a win. All credit to Buffalo, who have been very good, very scrappy, and Miller was playing pretty well considering the score - it was pond hockey for much of the time.
Great game, and looking forward to the game 7. I predict a Flyers win, but this Buffalo team has been incredibly resilient, and I don't want to underestimate them by saying it'll be easy.

Well if that were true, Buffalo would have one of the best records on the penalty kill. They actually finished the regular season 13th overall, which is not very good really. (Ryan Miller played 66 games for the Sabres in the regular season, so these stats reflect on him, as well as the team.)
Yes, these are "just stats,", but if we were to remove the inclusion of stats in any hockey discussions, it would be quite boring, and quite likely, limit an important perspective in any group discussion.
If the Flyers can win game 7, it will be in spite of their anemic power play (in the playoffs), but if they lose, it will be for a number of reasons, including their lack of power play success. And if you don't like that "stat," it will be because they scored less goals then their opponent for 4 out of 7 games, and that's a.stat you can't ignore! |

Ryan Miller is a great goalie guest. He came within 1 goal of winning a gold medal at the Olympics againist a very powerful team Canada.
The Sabres are an 7th -8th conference seed with Miller in net...without him they are a 9th to 12th seed like so many other teams in the east. No Miller...No playoffs. |

I agree Duke that Ryan Miller is a great goalie! I'm just stating that he (or Buffalo) do not usually kill off 28 out of 30 power plays, which is what Miller and Buffalo were able to do at the time of my original posting.
I think the Flyers going 2-for-30 (they're actually a bit better than that now) is a combination of Miller standing on his head, the success of the Sabres penalty killers, and also the Flyers not executing. (And the absence of Pronger is a factor too.)
For the Flyers to win game seven, they're going to need to find a way to beat Miller on the power play, and also, at even strength, but I guess that's stating the obvious on my part. |
