Antti Niemi has an opportunity to be one of the few players to win back-to-back Stanley Cups with two different teams. The last time a goalie did this was in 1917 with Harry Holmes.
Since expansion, there have only been two players (not goalies) who have won back-to-back Stanley Cups with two different teams. See if you can guess who, but no looking it up on the internet. One hint though - one player did it 5 years ago, and the other player did it 15 years ago! By the way, here's a list of players (and respective teams) who accomplished this "feat" prior to expansion. There are a few notable players on this list, but there are also a number of relatively "unknown" players on this list:

| without checking the net, I'm sure one of them is Cory Stillman (TB and CAR I think?). Can't think of who the other is. |

Yup, it's Claude Lemieux. Well done!! And despite the fact that he was one of the most hated players in the NHL, he was quite effective in the playoffs.
Hard to believe, but he actually scored 39 goals one NHL season! |

| Whoops. He actually scored 41 goals in one NHL regular season. And separate and apart from his 39 and 41 goals seasons, Lemieux had 3 other 30+ goal seasons! |

Man, I just couldn't think of Stillman, but now that I read it, I totally remember him getting a ton of mention. And he was indeed integral to both cup wins, especially in Carolina, so it is a notable achievement.
Claude Lemieux I remembered, actually - I just remember having a discussion a long time ago about how great a playoff performer he was, and had remembered that stat about his back to back with different teams. He was also a very key player to do this, and was an awesome guy to have on your team in the playoffs. Super-pest, and often, a very tenacious scoring threat.
I don't think Niemi will do it, but he certainly showed he wants to last night - he played very very well early, despite the softish "giveaway" goal later.

| Great question 8149. I wish I had seen your question earlier because I knew Lemieux and remembered Stillman, once I saw your hints. Anyway, if Annti Niemi does win back-to-back Cups, is he the first player to do that in his first two NHL seasons? He certainly would be in the post-expansion era. Does anyone know if any of the players listed previously by 8149 were winners in their rookie & sophomore years? |
