It's really easy to see what one year is all about:

From New Jersey's Perspective:

Parise is coming off a very serious injury which kept him sidelined for almost all of the year. Is he healthy? Will he come in a mesh with Kovalchuk and be a 40 goal guys again??? One year will tell them.

From Parise Perspective:

Is this team going to be good enough to be a contender?? They sucked for most of last year and they sunk all their eggs into Kovalchuk's basket. Secondly, how many years does Brodeur have left and who's the next keeper in NJ?? Does Parise want to stay for longer than a year??

For both parties:

New Jersey has $25 million to spend next season. They can lock Parise up at that time for big money for a longer period of time. Parise will also have a chance to test free agency if he wishes or NJ can trade him at the deadline for value to a team that wants to sign him long term.

1 yr makes perfect sense to me.

I can see your point Beans, in one sense. Lets see if he is healthy and still got it.

On the other hand, by not signing Parise right now to a long term contract, ( he just turned 27 ) he can now walk next season if he wants.

NJ can possibly lose out here big - time. But what do you do ??

If you sign him long term and he is healthy...boy what a return you can receive if you trade him with a good, locked up contract....on the other hand, with this 1 year deal there could be little or no return.

Has he a received a no - trade clause with this contract ?? This could be very important as to NJ`s trade return on Parise...if he is dealth down the road.

there is no NTC with this deal, so he could be easily traded should he not sign a long term deal with NJ before the deadline.

I think this will be one of those things that sorts itself out pretty early. I think Beans is (mostly) correct - this was a 1 year deal that made sense to both sides, and by December they'll both know if they want to commit longer term. Either Parise is going to gel nicely with Kovalchuk and provide a very strong 1-2 scoring threat on LW and NJ will look for many successful years to come, or something will not go well (either team chemistry or knee), and he'll be dealt for something by the deadline.

The last thing NJ wants is 2 high priced wingers signed to long term deals that do not work well together.

I was just going to say - there is absolutely NO NTC in his contract. ahem.

Let me repeat: The former (before Kovie arrived) franchise player - non-goalie, of course - was re-signed for a one year contract.

He is likely getting dealt. And they want him to do well and show other teams he's still got it, which he is likely to do.

All that said though . . . who knows? Maybe he meshes well with Kovalchuk on a different line, they tear it up, and he re-signs for a long term deal that summer after a solid cup run. I just don't see that as likely, however.

I heard this discussed briefly on the radio the other day and from everything i've heard, Parise actually wants to be in NJ. Of course, you have to assume he wants to win too, and if they really stink it up, he could be outta there i suppose?

However, this also could be one of those deals where he's dealt at the deadline, and returns in the offseason after a playoff run elsewhere? The return on him would be good and he would reap the benefits after returning and signing as a FA in the offseason.

Not saying this WILL happen, but it wouldn't shock me either.

That would shock me. Parise is not the kind of player that you move like that - the price to get him would be steep for any acquiring team at the deadline (I'm thinking multi-player and prospects), and no team would give up enough to get Parise without also having some sort of guarantee or strong sense that he would sign long term.

NJ is only going to move him if a) he does not gel with the rest of the team and Kovy, or b) NJ cannot sign him to a long term deal. And if either of those happen, Parise would not go back in the offseason anyway.

He will be used as trade bait at the deadline if NJ is in need of a few points to get into the playoffs.

True nuxfan, those deals usually are rental guys who are older than Parise and past their prime. It will be interesting to see what the return on him is though. Regardless of whether or not a team has a "feeling" they can sign him long term, or should i say, whether or not they've actually spoken to him , the price could be slightly lower than expected.

Perhaps a sign and trade will be the way NJ deals him?
