Poll Question:
What should the oilers do with hemsky?

Choices:

Sign him short term(1-3 years)
Sign him long term( 4+)
Trade him no matter what
Trade him, but only for a good price

Get rid of him, he's too injury prone and not as good as people think. He has 26 points in 47 games so far this year, he had 42 in the same amount of games last year. He has never had 80points in a single season and has only had two 20 goal seasons.

He has also returned to health and has 9 assists in his last 12 games. Decent but not quite 5mill a year if you ask me. Hopefully he can get back in form for next year....

5mil a year is absolutely ridiculous for Hemsky, that being said it is the Oilers so it's no like they will need that money in the offseason to sign free agents

If hemsky remains healthy, then this deal isnt an overpayment. Plus its a short deal so its in no danger of being a gomez type deal. The chemistry hemsky has with paajarvi and hall is great, so its still good for the rebuild. Hemsky will get 60 points next year.

Its a pretty big IF for someone that hasn't played a full season for 6 years...

But I agree, its a pretty safe bet given the short term nature of the deal, and the fact that EDM has loads of cap room to play with, for now. If he can stay healthy, and produce at PPG or better for those 2 years, then it will be worth it.

Ya, cuz the teams at the bottom of the league don't need to sign free agents and make their team better

They still have 10 million or so in cap space, Im still guessing they:ll go after suter. And when that fails they:ll try and sign the 2nd best d-Man out there, then the 3rd etc. BTW smyth is making like what? 5 million, 6 million? And hes not making more than 3 next year. So hemsky ands smyths new contracts burden the oilers less then the old ones.

Ohh Im sure they would love to sign some free agents, my point however is that Edmonton does not attract free agents. Who is the last big name they signed? Khabibulin....brutal

In the past that has been true. But looking forward, with hall, RNH and eberle there is a realistic chance that could change. probably not this off season though

Have you ever been to Edmonton? It's not exactly the best city in the world, very hard to attract free agents....same problem that Winnipeg will have

I voted sign him short term. So i am okay with the Oilers did.

He has been with the Team for awhile but has lacked some depth in supporting cast. Maybe the young guys will get him going again.

I would have preferred 3.5 to 4 a year but Hemmer has skills and his next year will determine whether or not the teams stays with him for the rebuild. I think he deserved the opportunity to continue with the team. Next year should be fun in Oil Country!
