Niklas Lidstrom is just plain good. 62 points and over +40 while killing most penalty's. He's the best Active defenceman by far,

Phaneuf isn't bad either. He doesn't have the +/- to show for it though. Phaneuf is more defensive than lidstrom is.

I voted for Pronger. It is pretty even between Lidstrom and Pronger though. I think Pronger is sometimes underestimated though. He isn't all that old and is great physically and plays awsome defense while maintaining an above average powerplay production. I would take either and don't favor any but I gave it to Pronger for the more exciting game.

I think Phaneuf could really improve his defensive game actually. He is still young he needs a little bit more maturing on the blue line defensively.

Actually I don't think that lidstrom will be able to keep up with the league by the end of this season. Phaneuf is only going to get better.

Phaneuf will get better... but I question the upper limit of his defensive ability. He will never be a shut-down defenseman, and hence never a top 2-way player.

What makes you think that Lidstrom wont be able to keep up with the league? I think that he's already proven beyond a shadow of a doubt how much you are wrong and there aint no indications of him slowing down. One of the best 2-way defensemen to ever play the game.

With Neidermayer not playing right now, the only guy that is even close to Lidstrom is Pronger, and he's not even that close.

Think about this, there are only three players with the same or more Norris Trophies than Lidstrom. Being in the company of Harvey, Bourque, and Orr is pretty special. He's won it 6 out of the last 7 years it has been awarded and had been nominated 8 of the last 9 seasons. That means he is voted as one of the top 3 defensemen for almost a decade.

Looking at Pronger, Neidermayer and Lidstrom, the unwritten three best d-men in the past 5 seasons, the numbers are not even close.

Lidstrom - 401games - 66 goals -235 assists - 301 points +133
Pronger - 309 games - 47 goals - 220 assosts - 267 points +51
Neidermayer - 399 games - 64 goals - 194 assists - 257 points + 69

Even this year, Lidstrom has 5 points in 5 games and is +5 while averaging the 3rd most minutes in the league.

To me that shows no signs that he can't keep up with the league. He will retire when he feels like it, which may be soon. But he could play into his 40's and still be effective.

Where's Phaneuf in this?? Not even in the same ball park. With all due respect, if you think Phaneuf has a defensive edge on Lidstrom, you must think that Defense is hitting. That is about the only thing that Phaneuf has on Lidstrom.

Phaneuf will be lucky if he ever gets to Lidstrom's level.

I think that Anton Volchenkov should be in that list. He was top shot blocker in 06-07 at only 24 years of age and he is a definate contender again this year. Every year his game has improved and i believe he is on his way to be one of the league's best defencemen.

There is no way Anton Volchenkov should be in the same list as players like Lidstrom, Pronger and Niedermayer.

It is absolutely embarassing that Souray is even on this list. He's easily one of the worst "defensive" defencemen in the whole league. A complete pilon in his own end.

He's got a hard shot. I'll give him that.

Lidstrom has to be considered the best. He has so many dimensions that every night it is lik facing a new defenseman. he blocks shots, scores goals, can handle the puck and can play a physical game when he wants to. He gets my vote.

How is Souray on that list? He wouldn't be top 10. save some embarasment and plug Bouwmeester in.

Lidstrom is still the best defenceman in the league. His leadership skills along with his playing ability, makes him the perfect defenceman for any team in the NHL.

Lidstrom by a fair margin, although Pronger is more effective physically (the non-stats component).

Please though - for the sake of validity for this poll - take down Kaberle's name and the 101 retarded Leafs fans who voted for him. It's a ridiculous joke to have him on the list, and shames every thinking Leaf fan out there. Replace him with Rafalski or Redden please.

This topic started back in October of 2007, Niedermayer was not playing in the NHL at the time...

My All-Time Favorite is Raymond Bourque. (My all-time favorite player, of any position)

Current top 5 D-men in the NHL:

1. Nicklas Lidstrom
2. Scott Neidermayer
3. Chris Pronger
4. Zdeno Chara

The fifth spot, could be any of:

Duncan Keith, Rob Blake or Brian Rafalski

Those are my personal top 4 (of overall skill, over a period of atleast 3 years) and my #5 tie.

Irvine/prez.

Dion Phaneuf?? That's funny.

Even the players agree he is highly overrated. In fact, this story says that of the 272 NHL players polled, Phaneuf was the most overrated player by a landslide. He received 21% of the vote and the next closest player(Wade Redden) got 7% of the vote.

Dion Phaneuf can hit and has a decent shot. Outside of that, he's really not that good at anything.

Ultimately, he is Sheldon Souray with a bit more mobility.

You do realize that this poll was made three years ago, and one year before Doughty was in the NHL.

There was once a license plate in Toronto that abbreviated "Go Leafs" it read "Golfs".
