I guess Carolina's 2006 cup wasn't a fluke...Their my pick

Pittsburgh's just being what they are...a joke team too focused on one player to perform well....Maybe if they focused more on winning rather than keeping Sid's point streak going they'd be over .500!

Philadelphia I must say has surprised me to this date in the season. The picked up Briere and a couple of other minor aquistions but I still didnt think they would do very well.

I must say they are off to a fine start and I wouldnt mind seeing them keep it up.

The play of Briere has been a great boost for the entire team. The did not really have a superstar( Gagne at the best ) before Briere was signed in the off season. He is my favourite on the ice and for good reason. If Briere was a bigger body and had a bit more creativity with the puck he could easily be the best player in the league.

Pittsburgh for how bad they have been. So far, they are Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, and 19 observers. Jordan Staal - 2 points. Yikes.

I was tempted to go with Pitts but decided on other, the Montreal Canadians. I almost went into shock when I saw them at #5 in the latest power rankings. Their power play is definatly clicking right now. When they get a chance to use it that is. For a non playoff team last year that only additions were from subtractions for the most part they've been playing surprisingly well.

The flyers do not surprise me. They did not sign a few minor acquisitions, they acquired a few a good players.

Brier is the most notable, of course. But in addition they have added two good defencemen as well in Smith and Timonen. Both were captains of their respective teams.

You take Knuble, Richards, Gagne, Brier, Timonen & Smith. Add a decent goaltender, you have a good team if the rest of your team can contribute some as well. I mean, they are not stanley cup contenders yet, in my opinion. But they are a playoff team.

My biggest surprise is also the Montreal Canadiens. Their powerplay is excellent and they are winning games. But, we seen this at the start of last season to? Then it went down hill.

So, who knows. But I do hope they keep it up.

I agree with Irvine. If I remember correctly, Hockey News put them at 13th place, and now they are 4th in east.

Actually, the last 2 seasons were like that. Let's hope it doesn't became a habit.

Suprises This Year: Carolina - But they have stumbled a bit lately.
Montreal - Can they keep it up? Time will tell.
Ottawa - Over achieved thus far. I hope
Rangers - Starting to come on. Getting scary.
Columbus - What's with that start?
Leafs - Same old team so far. Surprised me as I
expected more.
Anaheim - Didn't expect them to drop this much.

I think Chicago. 4th place in the West. Tied for 8th overall. Not too shabby considering they've been in the basement for years.

Montreal Canadians, No doubt, everyone had them nto making the playoffs and being a dissapointment, fortunatley for me and all the habs fans, there proving everyone wrong, 2 solid goalies, strong defense and a much improved offensive line, not to mention there powerplay...hopefully, it doesnt start to go downhill after the all star break, if they keep it up, they can be solid contenders...Also Chicago, Columbus have been very surprising this year, the rangers, flyers and sens were my obvious choices to be very strong this year...Its gonna be a tight year...Go Habs Go!

I chose Pittsburgh

First off, Crosby, while I still believe he is a shoe in for Art Ross, is not building off sucess of last year like he did after 05-06.

Essentialy, though, you have a team of high draft picks in Sid, Malkin, Staal, Armstrong, Fleury, Malone, Christensien, Armstrong, Orpik .... you get the point

One would only expect them to get better with experience. The chemistry seems to be fading though. You have to wonder if a little bit of the fanfare they manage to block out so well until now is getting to them. After all, the 20 year old sensation that is Crosby showed up players twice his age last year at the awards ceremony.

You cant blame anyone for hoping that one day its them.... the credentials are set in place. Maybe. just maybe. there is a little less focus on the team, and a little more on individual performance. At any rate, they should soon realize that their individual performance is dependent on the collective unit, and the Pens should be a powerhouse before January.

I went with the blackhawks. Who would've known that guys like Kane, Teows and Lang would have such a big impact.

Whoever went with Ottawa, I just want to know why, they've been one of the top team for quite a few years now.
