Are there any potential developing d-men who have the potential to take over from Lidstrom?
Any with multiple Norris wins in their future?

| Eric Johnson, Jack Johnson, Whitney (pittsburg). Isn't Phaneuf already a star? He got 5 assists the other night and he has around 20 pts this season already, I think he's pretty much arrived. |

There are some pretty good one's picked to this point. When considering Norris type players who will one day be known as the best defenseman in the league. Wow, slim pickings in my book.
Some say Phaneuf has arrived, I think he still has much to learn and develop. Let's not forget people, most if not all of the league's top d-men are over the age of 30. It seems like is take a d-man 7+ years to "grow up" and really learn how to play the position to the fullest. Phaneuf could and is the most likely to be that guy. But he still has some maturing to do. He will be dangerous.
I also like Brent Burns, Shea Weber(who no one talks about), Eric Johnson, Marc Staal, M.E. Vlasic, Paul Ranger, Josh Gorges, Ryan Suter, and Ladislav Smid as the super young d-man in the league. I would say 1/2 of them turn out to be average, and out of the other 1/2, maybe 1/3 of those guys are legitimate Norris type players.
Then there is a whole group of guys that are 24-29 that are pretty solid. Bouwmeester, Volchenkov, Hamhuis, Beauchemin, Regher, Kaberle, Boynton, Brewer,Hannan, and Rozsival.
The problem is I don't really see one that completely stands out. There is a ton of talented d-men out there, and what I can see happening is like the mid to late 70's. Tons of amazing defensemen. The only thing missing will be the Bobby Orr.
So to answer your question Willus, I don't see one name I could put above the rest.
Wayne or Bobby?? How about both!!! |

I think that a defence that takes over the game either has to be Bobby Orr style or Stevens style. I think that a lot of defensemen right now are doing a bit of both, which helps the flow of the game and helps generate interest. But I think we should sit tight on the the dominant D issue, since even Phaneuf doesn't seem mature enough to be showing signs of filling in the shoes of Lidstrom.
