I would say the elite players that may be moved on the deadline are: Blake - LA sellers? There may be a deal for either St. Louis, Richards, or Lecavalier for Turco Stoll - Detroit Columbus, could play better hockey Raycroft - Pittsburgh LA Tampa Bay, Backup Sundin - Toronto Rebuilds? Ryder - Not producing Huet - Bacup Goaltender now Murray - Slow Start Sydor - replaced by younger guys Marleau - Reports on calgary but dont see how they could take him the cap, bad season Liles - Toronto Pittsburgh, Needs move O. Jokinen - anywhere, Always about to get traded

No way, no how. You don't trade to bulk up in one area, to do worse in another.
Prospal and a draft pick is more likely, only if they are confident they can go far with Raycroft. Either way, I would take Raycroft over most picks, he is the calder winner and will bounce back.

Smith has not even clsoe to as much playoff experience. If it ain't broke, ya don't fix it. Why would they do that? You know what that does for the morale in the locker room? And who says Turco wants out?

First of all I found this hilarious and actually laughed when I read it but anyways....
Turco may have playoff experience but that doesn't make a playoff performer other than last year Turco has been a dud in the palyoffs and who knows that could have been a fluke year or he could have finally broken the curse and will have another amazing performance. |

The Sundin issue was featured by Bob McKenzie this morning. I think Sundin does want to get traded on to a cup team more than he lets on. The issue becomes, what if his new team does not win the cup? Toronto is trying to pull a 'bait and switch' and Sundin is fully aware. Trade Sundin for 3 good players/prospects and draft picks as a rental to a contending team (think about how much Tkachuk, Smyth and Forsberg got, Bob points out) and then pick him up next year as a FA, at a salary loss to himself. At this point in his career, I think it is win-win. He moves THIS year on to a playoff team, comes back NEXT year onto a clearly better team, and has a chance to do what he always wanted which is win in T.O. Time is running out, but the fountain of youth will last longer than we think

Enhance what, his chances at retiring to find himself without a cup? I do not think that if he stays on Toronto, he will win a cup.
In fact, I know it. No way no how. However, the trade might just be the thing Ferguson needs to keep his job. Imagine trading your captain for great players, only to pick him up again. I think that trade would be more impressive than the Sam Pollock / Guy Lafleur one. Ingenious is what it is.
Of course, to date it is all up in the air... and so are the chances of another cup in Hogtown

I don't know Alex, Sammy Pollock's move is pretty hard to top in my books. What you're thinking of is sort of obvious. What Pollack did, trading players to a team (the Kings) to improve their chances of finishing out of last so that his team could get the first pick overall (they held the Seals pick that year), now that was very, very, very clever, if not pure "genius". And the result, lots and lots of Cups. That was a great team anyway no doubt, but what Pollack did by ensuring his Habs got Guy, one of the best right wingers in the history of the game, surpasses the type of move you're talking about (which, even if they were to get some great young guys for Mats, more than likely is not going to produce 5 cups in a decade, or whatever obscene number it was for those frigg'n Habs).
Edit - for those of you interested in the Pollock-Lafleur details, see below (copied from an article):
In May 1970, he sent Ernie Hicke and a first-round choice to Oakland for the obscure François Lacombe and the now defunct Seals' first-round pick. All the while, he kept his eye on the gifted Lafleur, who was tearing up junior hockey with the Quebec Remparts.
The following season, when it appeared that Los Angeles might finish last and claim the top pick, Mr. Pollock sent veteran Ralph Backstrom to the Kings to boost them ahead of Oakland.
That allowed Montreal to choose Lafleur first overall in the 1971 draft.

Well if, and only if Sundin waves his NTC can he be traded.
The team that picks him up is only going to offer drafts picks, or players that are in the minors. When you are in a playoff run, and you want to bolster your team this is what you do...
Sundin would get you some draft choices, but do not forget some of them will be "conditional" on whether the new team can sign him, if they can't you will lose the conditional picks...

First of all, if the rest fell in place, he would do it, for the team, knowing he would be back.
And also, someone might want to get the details for me, but as Bob said, look at what ast year's rental players got for their former teams, and its day to night by how Sundin is playing and how an injury prone Forsberg, a Keith Tkachuk who is getting old and can't puckhandle, and a Ryan Smyth who in all honesty is not worth THAT much.
I realize Pollock was thinking out of the box. And Guy did mroe for his team. But literally 'renting' your team captain. This is exciting to me, particularily because I live in T.O.

To who? Sam Pollock? I never knew him! John Ferguson? No one likes him very much, me included. Mats Sundin? The guy is a good hockey player, I am entitled to say that. Bob McKenzie? I just quoted what he said, that does not qualify as sucking up.
Anything else, 'guest'? I hope that will be it for these sort of posts. I don't need to fight with people on the internet, that is not why I join a hockey forum I have come to enjoy.
