The NHL has decided to try an NBA-style slam-dunk competition shootout. Meaning the shots will be judged upon style and ingenuity. The only question is: What three NHL personnel/celebrities would make great judges?

SNOOP DOG!!!!! That guy loves hockey!
I think getting some old timers such as Gordie Howe or Jean Beliveau to judge would be pretty cool. |

Paintrain, I honestly laughed out loud when I read that. I think Steve Carell would be pretty fun.(This guy also loves hockey)
On sportscentre today Gretzky almost looked disgusted when he heard about this, which could mean that most hockey traditionalists are not too warm to this idea. Personally I think its awesome. You can't help but feel sorry for the goaltenders though. |

I think the NHL is reaching to try to get some excitement to the All Star Game.
However, the best idea for that is, OUT DOOR ALL STAR GAME!!!
Pretty simple.
Wayne or Bobby?? How about both!!! |

I agree Beans 100%. Play hockey with the best players where it was first created, outdoors. But to the point, I would like to see it. A lot of players can do those cool moves but never do them in a game or a shootout in a game. Now is their change to do it. John Tavares in a commercial picked the puck up from behind the net, threw it over then waked it in. You never see that normally. Plays like that is just pure entertainment.
Outdoors would be cool though. Either way, I'm happy with both.

Yeah. I had already suggested that in a previous forum. It's something i'd like to see.

I would agree wholeheartedly with an outdoor all-star game - hell, if you want to make it glitzy for the americans Bettman, you can even have hot girls on skates wearing short skirts while fireworks blast away into the night - in between periods, of course.
However, I probably had the same reaction as Gretz when I heard about this listening to the radio this morning. They were even discussing the problem of the goalies, because they don't want NHL goalies getting hurt or stopping great moves - they want someone who can play pretty well, but will let in some good looking deke.
Worst. Idea. Ever.
Here's my idea to "match" the slam-dunk competition: two superstars face off at centre ice, with two all star goalies behind them. The ref drops the puck, whoever scores first wins, and then it's another two. Alimination round tournament that woul take all of an hour to finish, with I am sure some great end to end rushes in between. |

An outdoor all-star game would be great. Even better if it was actual pond hockey (not that it would ever happen).
As far as a hot-shot shoot-out I like the idea. I mean who didn't get excited when Marek Malik put the puck between his legs or when Robbie Schremp did his full-on lacrosse goal?

Slozo - that one on one tournament is a pretty good idea too. |

And the downward spiral continues... Terrible idea. No doubt Bettman will make it an institution. I think what Bettman and his marketing schmucks don't get is the fundamental difference between hockey and basketball. Basketball players love to show off. Hockey players don't.

It will be interesting how many of the top scorers, or performers in the NHL participate.
The top players I saw thought that it would be entertaining but that they don't have those moves them selves...
Is it not ironic that the fanciest shootout players are no where to be seen on the top list in NHL scoring, I wonder if they spend too much time practicing there shootout skills, and not enough on the real game at hand...
I guess if the NHL wants entertainment who don't they get some chimps, put them on skates, and see if the can score on a bear...
