Replace Vancouver with Chicago and maybe people won't laugh quite as hysterically at you.

EDIT: Personally voted San Jose. Both they and the Blackhawks have favorable schedules leading up to xmas, but San Jose has a significant points lead.

Outside of San Jose I think that Calgary has the best shot. Kiprusoff is playing like a man possessed! He looks like he did 4 or 5 years ago. Iginla was the top player in the league in November. The team is getting secondary scoring from more than a few guys. Their defence is hands down one of the top 3 in the league. And their division is not overly competitive this year which is very rare for the north west. Could be the perfect storm for the Flames.

No love for the East??? 2 of the top 3 teams and 3 of the top 5 are in the East and people have the cones to talk about Calgary and Vancouver??

I agree with San Jose and maybe even Chicago, but Washington and more specifically Pittsburgh have a far better chance at taking the #1 spot than Vancouver or Calgary.

I guess no one else noticed that Crosby and his reasonably healthy Penguins have the same number of wins as the Mighty Sharks???

And my Homie Sid has 8 points in 2 games and 12 points in the past 6 games.

Did I mention that most if not all of the Pitt's stars are healthy??? Kunitz should be back any day and other than that, Cooke(suspension) is their only player on the injury list.

And let's not forget the uber agressive Alexander Ovechkin who claims to be 'angry' for being suspended. We all know the guy has the skill to drop 10-12 points in 3-5 game stretch and see Washington climb the ladder too.

The East is a Beast.

Bean's, agreed. But the teams in the east are looking up at San Jose and that team got a wake up when Chicago gave them a spanking a week ago. I'd say its San Jose's to lose.

I would ague that Pittsburgh is not looking up on San Jose. Both have 19 wins. The difference is that Pitt does not have any overtime losses while San Jose has 4, so SJ if 4 points clear.

Perfect example of why it is pathetic to reward a team for losing. The 4 OTL that San Jose still are loses, but they get points??

Dumb.

I have no problem with OTL/SOL points, as they're meant to reward teams for at least keeping it a close game through 3 periods. However, I am of the opinion that they should give 3 points for a regulation win if they're going to keep the OTL point., that way they are always giving out 3 points per game. Though if they did that, San Jose would still be ahead of Pittsburgh, 58 to 51, as San Jose has more regulation wins.

You could argue it, but the way the rules are San Jose is the overall points leader. The question who will lead in points by Xmas. So why argue the point. San jose has 4 points in hand over Pittsburg and dont look to be slipping any. Pittsburg may be the better team between the 2 at the end of the year, but that aint the question.

Grah, that was supposed to be me. Guess what I'm saying is, if were going to reward people for OT losses, we should also reward them for regulation wins.

Out of boredom, I also took a look at the rest of the league with this system:
Team = W-OTW-OTL-L = Points (Difference from current standings)

PIT = 13-6-0-9 = 51 (+1)
WSH = 12-4-6-5 = 50 (-1)
BUF = 12-3-2-7 = 44 (+2)
NJD = 13-4-1-7 = 48 (=)
ATL = 13-1-3-7 = 44 (+1)
BOS = 8-6-5-8 = 41 (-3)
OTT = 9-4-4-8 = 39 (=)
NYR = 11-2-1-13 = 38 (+2)
PHI = 10-3-1-10 = 37 (=)
TBL = 7-3-8-8 = 35 (-2)
NYI = 6-4-7-10 = 33 (=)
FLA = 5-6-4-12 = 31 (+1)
MTL = 4-8-2-13 = 30 (-1)
TOR = 6-1-7-12 = 27 (=)
CAR = 2-3-5-17 = 17 (=)

SJS = 16-3-4-6 = 58 (=)
CGY = 13-4-3-6 = 50 (+1)
CHI = 12-5-3-6 = 49 (-1)
COL = 13-2-6-8 = 49 (=)
LAK = 12-4-2-10 = 46 (=)
VAN = 13-2-0-12 = 43 (+5)
NSH = 10-5-2-10 = 42 (-1)
PHX = 10-5-1-11 = 41 (-1)
CBJ = 10-3-5-9 = 41 (-1)
DET = 10-3-4-9 = 40 (=)
DAL = 9-3-7-8 = 40 (-2)
STL = 8-2-5-10 = 33 (=)
EDM = 8-2-4-13 = 32 (+2)
MIN = 6-5-3-12 = 31 (-1)
ANA = 7-3-4-12 = 31 (-1)

The biggest changes are Boston, dropping 3 spots and losing NE division lead to Buffalo due to having only 8 regulation wins, and Vancouver, jumping 5 (!!!) spots to 6th in the West due to most of their wins coming in regulation, as well as winning both of their OT/SO appearances.

/end tangent

the east in no beast vancouver has just walked through 2 of the top teams in the confrence back to back, there was a reason bettman didnt want the east playing the western confrence as often, there is more viewers in the east coast so you cant have their teams losing all the time.

Vancouver would to win every single game between now and christmas just to be 3 games ahead of where San Jose is NOW. The sharks would still beat Van with OTL/SOL and 1 or 2 regulation wins.

Statistically Vancouver has an extremely low chance of coming close to the top spot by christmas.

Really It's going to come down to: Pittsburgh, Washington, San Jose, Chicago. Calgary would be the fringe pick. I would be quite surprised to see any other team there come Dec 25.

The arena wall in chicago should be credited with a goal.

Are you talking about Jersey and Philly?? Ok, I'll give the Jersey game, but Philly has lost how many straight and just got their junk handed to them by one of the actual best teams in the East?? Not one of the best.

And I think you posted a day early as the current non-playoff contending Canucks just lost to the statistical worst team in the NHL. Sure the Canucks have a solid 5-1-0 record against the East. But the Thrashers have a 5-2-0 record against the West and no one is talking about them as one of the best in the league??

The Canucks are 10pts back of the actual league leaders. As the one poster said, they would win out until Christmas and be only 6 points, 7 points, and 8 points ahead of SJ, Washington, and Pitt respectively if those three teams Lose every game until Christmas.

Vancouver is only 4 points clear of Edmonton and they have the worst road record in the league have have lost even more many games to injury.

Canucks are in no way a 1 man team just to be clear. Ya i forgot Chicago and New Jersey They both got chances. Vancouver had the most games to play before christmas so i thought they had a decent chance of getting to the top. At least no one voted Toronto.
This is Chicago's last chance to win the stanley cup for a while.

I'm surprised by the LA King, personally. They recently have taken over the first spot in the West, although they have played more games than SJ. But, these kids are finally showing what they can do.

For a few years now, fans of hockey must have noticed the young talents the Kings have been growing. And now, they may finally be ready to compete.

The Kings have strong youth up-front, and a couple of young d-men who can play puck aswell. The only big issue I see right now, is goaltending. Is Quick really a number one NHL Goalie?

Their young developing goalie is Bernier, but we can't say for certain that he will turn in to a top NHL Goalie just yet.

But is it now time for the young kings to show what they have?

Well it's Christmas day and officially the New Jersey Devils are in first place (tied with Pittsburgh but they have played more games)

I'm not all that surprised by Carolina being in last. Aside from Staal (failing miserably right now), Ruutu, Ward & perhaps a few others... this team doesn't really have top-quality players. Atleast, players that make you say "Wow, this guy can help carry a team."

I'm not even sure how they won their Cup, to be honest. Hard work I guess.
