Poll Question:
Who is the best Back up Goalie in the NHL right now?
Requirements: (must be a true Backup i.e Tim Thomas is not a backup, and lets try and avoid young goalies who should become starters i.e Schenieder. And try and avoid Platoon goalies like the san jose situation)

I'd have to say Clemmesen.
Anyone who can guide the Devils to a playoff spot without Brodeur deserves the nod.
There was once a license plate in Toronto that abbreviated "Go Leafs" it read "Golfs". |

I would have to say the penguins Brent Johnson.
He is 6-1-1 with a .943 save % and 1.63 gaa. With faced with over 200 shots.
That's what a back up needs to do, be prepared to face tons of shots and win games when your starter is unable to preform. |

It was 2008-2009 when he had a bruised elbow and only played 31 games.
The injury cost him more than half a season.

This is a very tough poll to vote on, really . . . even taking into account only the true back-ups as you say, I had a tough time not voting for Hedberg, Conklin or Theodore.
But I went with who I think is the overall best back-up at this moment in his career, and that's Marty Biron.
Has two 30 win seasons, has been a starter, and although relegated to a back-up role at this point, he certainly has the chops to be a #1 goalie.

It is a tough one - as slozo says, some backups are not true "backups", and are either currently starting or tandem-ing with their respective teams.
For true backups, I look to goalies that have played 4 games or less this year - the rest are tandem goalies IMO, or are starting but were not a team's #1 option coming into the season. My 2 are Hedberg and Schneider (who is not on your list).
Patsy - you seem to have left Schneider off the list because he "should become a starter"? Most of today's starting goalies started their careers as backups or tandems, so I'm not sure why you would exclude him based on this. Although he's playing well now in his role, there is at least a reasonable chance that he will never be a regular starting goalie in the NHL - anything can happen when you're 24. I think you should allow him into the poll based on his current - and in fact the only role he has ever had so far in his NHL career - role as a backup. |

| Does anyone remember Brian Hayward when he backed up Roy for the Habs in the late 80's? In my opinion they were the best tandem in the league for awhile. Hayward actually played a decent amount of games behind Roy. Not like today, when a big-name starter plays 70+ games. |

I've always loved the way Msthieu Garon has played the game, He is a true career back up, the only times he has ever had to play more games in a year than his counter part were due to the starters injury or poor play. I remember his early years in Montreal i thought this guy could be every bit the Goalie Theodore was .. Unfortunatly for Garon he was stuck behind a then Hart and Veznia winner.
But what i think is most important with a Backup Goalie he cannot be a distraction to the team rather he has got to be one of the best teamates possible due to his lack of playing time. Mat Garon is just that a class act and the ideal Goalie as a backup.

Andy Moog is the best backup in recent history. If you are talking current, I'd have to go with Shane O'Brien.
The Oil WILL make the playoffs in 2011. |

They do? A quick NHL stats comparison:
Quick: 61-44-9, 2.54 GAA, .908 SV%
Bernier: 4-3, 2.83 GAA, .906 SV%
Perhaps I'm not clear on the definition of "outshine"

I remember Hayward and you are right. Killer tandem. Back in the 80's is was very common for a team to have 2 goalies to get 40 games each. I remember Fuhr and Moog through the 8o's being an Oiler fan. Billy Smith and Rollie Melanson. There were a ton of great 80's goalie tandems. |

In the same vein as the last comment, the best tandem I ever saw was Fuhr and Hasek in Buffalo. Think they led, or in the top of stats for goals allowed stats that year, both played lots of games.
Currently I'm gonna go with Biron. Can't really call him a starter except in Philly, but in Buffalo and now New York is earning playing time beside true franchise goalies. |

i also said lets avoid young goalies that should become starters and focus more on true back ups
