Ottawa has traded Mike Fisher to Nashville for 1st pick 2011 & a conditional pick 2012.

good pickup for NSH, and not a huge surprise destination-wise, given that his wife lives there.

should be a great trade for Ottawa. Fisher has never lived up to expectations and is a marginal 2nd line center at best. Considering there is no salary coming back. This looks terrific to help kick start the rebuilding by moving out the multiple overpaid under performing current group who have dragged the team to the bottom of the league

now that Ottawa has two picks in this years draft, and one that's sure to be a lottery, you can bet that they'll shop this one around in the hopes it can bring back some useful assets.

It's a shame to see Fisher go - he's a hard worker on ice and he's made lots of impact in the community via fundraising and such.

Objectively, I think it's a good trade for both teams. NAshville needs an extra something to win in the playoffs and Ottawa has to start rebuilding somewhere.

From what I've heard, the only "untouchables" are Karlsson, Spezza, and Alfredsson (a - because he has a no movement clause and is the face of the franchise and b - because Melnyk said so)

I wouldn't be surprised if the Sens are actively shopping any/all of :

Rutuu, Phillips, Kuba, Kovalev, Gonchar, and perhaps Kelly, Shannon and Michalek.

I can't see Ottawa moving the 1st rounder they just picked up from Nashville, unless it's a deal to move up in the draft or for a very good young player/project.

Do you really think that Spezza is untouchable. I thought at that price if the offer is right he would move. I also believe that Ottawa will be very active come playoff time. They have many assets that teams could be interested in. They have good role players, just not clicking and all underachieving.

Mike Fisher for a 1st and a conditional draft pick seems like a good trade for both teams. Nashville could very well use more depth out front for the playoffs and Ottawa will benefit from the cap room they got all of a sudden, and also a first rounder is exacty what you need for a rebuilt.

What exactly were the expectations on this guy? From everything i've heard, he's a pretty solid 2nd line center with some great defensive capabilities. Isn't that what they expected when they got him? Was he ever touted as a #1 / PPG guy?

It was only a short 14 months or so ago that there was talk he was in the running for a spot on Team Canada 2010! Remember, he was having a pretty darn good season last year, unfortunately for the Sens, he hasn't had a good one this year!

Here's a link the old thread from last year (actually the thread started at the end of '08) where Fisher is mentioned on more than one occasion!

Another trade I didn't see coming, can't wait for deadline day!

There was once a license plate in Toronto that abbreviated "Go Leafs" it read "Golfs".

Was the expectation based on his cap hit or salary? Fair trade. Once the big salary hit was gone in the first few years (started at $6M) of the contract, $4.2M cap hit with the remaining real salary of $4 to $3M made him extremely attractive.

He'll fit into the Preds system quite quickly.

best season is 53 points. in the playoffs he has 28 points in 75 games. now over 30 and has suffered several knee injuries almost certainly his best years are behind him. he can't hit the net with a shot. not nearly as good defensively as he used to be. great community guy. great guy for effort. too much money for what he does.

Let the re-build begin.

Fisher was a quality two-way Center. But, if the Sens are going to rebuild, then a 1st and 2nd or 3rd round pick is what was needed to be added.

IF this is a true rebuild, then I like the return.

The only down side to a first rounder this year is that it's considered a weak draft. Same reason you'll prob see a few more first rounders dealt at or before the deadline.

Also bodes well for TO in that the pick they give Boston this time around likely won't get them a player the quality of Tyler Seguin. It may also be the reason that Chiarelli has openly stated that he's willing to trade that pick for "the right deal".

Absolutely Alex. Boston IS going to trade that pick due to the weak draft. If you're not picking in the top 4 or 5, it's a real crapshoot. Toronto IMO are working their way out of the lottery so don't be surprised when it's traded. Question is, will Chia trade it before T.O. gets to far out of the lottery in order to get a return on it.

I think Murray pulled off a coup getting a first rounder for Fisher, and possibly more. He is a great 3rd line center but a lacking 2nd line center. When Murray gave him the contract he did I thought he was bonkers. To be able to get that off the books, even though it was front end loaded (there is still $7m over the next two years, but a $4.2M cap hit annually) is a good move.

Really?? 3rd line centre?? You sure have high expectations. I mean, with the exception of teams with 2-1st line centres with one of them playing on the 2nd line (TB, Pitt, PHI, Etc) I think you would be hard pressed to find many other 2nd line centres in the NHL with 5 of the past 6 seasons with more than 20 goals and more than 40 points. He's an above average defensive player to say the least(see Selke nomination) and plays both the PK and the PP. His $4ish million cap hit is manageable and he has 2 year left.

I think the deal is about right for both teams. Nashville gives up a late (19th-23rd) 1st round pick an a conditional 3rd for a legitimate #2 centre. In many people's opinions, one of the better 2nd line centres in the NHL.

Mike Fisher is a great hockey player, Nashville knows what its received on this deal.

Ottawa`s late 1st round pick may turn out to be another Wade Belak ( 12 overall ) who knows.

I think Ottawa could have brought back a more proven top notch prospect off most any NHL team for Mike Fisher who is a dam good hockey player. Now they have a crap shoot to look forward to, who knows how this pick will work out.
