Poll Question:
The eighth spot on both sides of the NHL is a close race right now, but of all the teams fighting for the last spot, who do you think could actually upset the first seeded team?

I personally think that the Flames are a team that come playoff time can play with a lot of heart, with Camelleri on the lineup, who always seems to play a little harder come playoff time, I think they could be a team to watch out for soon.

I say LA. Quick has proven to be solid and let's face it, they've played low scoring hockey all season which is usually the case in the playoffs! Kipper could win a series on his own so Calgary is also a good possibility. I think this is more likely than any upsets in the east due to the fact it looks like the 8 seed in the west is going to draw the playoff inexperienced Blues!

I voted Calgary, but it is SO close among three or four I would say have an excellent chance. It also depends on what your top team is.

For the Jets, I give them very little chance. Buffalo and Washington could put up a fight - and both have (at least formerly) excellent goaltenders who can steal a series on their own.

Except that . . . they are guaranteed to play the Rangers, the best team top to bottom, with no discernible weaknesses, and the top goalie in the league (IMHO). I don't see it happening in the east because of this.

In the West, I do think LA has a fantastic chance at an upset, but went with Calgary because of Kipper and Iginla and Cammalleri and that crew being so experienced in the playoffs.

But my odds probably change depending on the top team in the west . . . against St. Louis, the probable west winner, I give a slight edge to Calgary. But if Vancouver or Detroit catch up and win, I might give the slight edge to LA - a deeper squad that matches up better against good second line scoring, and a team with the potential for more offense.

But in the end, it looks like St.Louis - the unlikeliest of west winners this year - and I give the Flames the best chance at an upset.

I think LA - that team is stacked, and if they make it into the playoffs they'll make some noise.

I think the advantage in the west is that STL looks likely to finish first in the conference - they have almost no recent playoff experience, and the pressure will be on them to succeed, will it be too much? A hungry and hot team could rattle them and take them out I think, so whoever finishes 8th in the west will have that chance.

There are five teams vying for what looks to be the last two playoff spots in the west.

Phoenix, Colorado, L.A., San Jose and Calgary are currently a point apart with 10-12 games to go.

If any of those five teams make it to the playoffs - look out. They will have a edge on the top teams in the west, some who may (emphasis on may) be on coast mode.

For two of the aforementioned teams to make the playoffs means they will have needed to play very well down the stretch. It's like the playoffs for them right now, and the two teams (of the five) who make it will be in playoff hockey mode.

I agree with Nuxfan about St. Louis. I continue to be impressed by their play this season, and for them to sit atop the NHL standings is no fluke. But it's a tight league now, so I wouldn't be shocked to see them eliminated in the first round. My money would be on the Blues, but I think whoever they play will give them a good go! It wouldn't be a shocking upset to see St. Louis bounced in the first round.

And while this comment might not make sense (when considering the current standings), I would be more surprised if the Canucks were knocked out in the first round.

Kipper is good great but unless he grows 2 extra arms or becomes some sort of god than he aint stopping a good offensive team. Especially 4 times. I would much sooner put my money on Quick who has Doughty in front of him and a supreme offensive collection in front of him rather than just Iggy, Tanguay and Cammi. No offense to the rest of Calgary`s offense but they are basically just fillers and could be replaced with ease.
