| ok so i voted EDM. i cant see them missing the play offs after 3 number one picks. but this would require a good offseason with moves and free agent signings. ( number 1 d-man, number 1 goalie.) |

| I pick Toronto. I can't see Burke not making a move for a proven goalie *cough *cough Luongo..... A guy like Lu would be enough to have them in the playoffs! |

This is actually a really good poll, and so incredibly hard to predict! Honestly . . . between the Islanders, Toronto, and Montreal in the East; and Edmonton in the West . . . it's a pick'em.
I went with Toronto (I know, I know . . . you can groan, call it homerism, tell me when will I ever learn . . . I've heard it all), with the caveat that they actually get Luongo or a proven vet goalie to at the very least back up Reimer. Without that, they are probably also-rans . . . but I see that happening, especially with the pressure on Burke now to do it, or your out.
Montreal and the Islanders are right there. I would pick the Islanders first, EXCEPT for the fact that that division is so darn crowded with quality teams. So, I think the Islanders have to continue to bide their time, or wait for at least two of those other teams to falter basically. Montreal may be a year or two more away, but we all know how hard they will work at improbably making the playoffs - and with Price in net, it's doable to get the right cast-offs together to make a run.
So, right behind Toronto, I actually put Edmonton. I think they are less likely because of the defence, and the competition (the 6-8 position teams in the west are much tougher than the eastern ones IMHO) is fierce - however, they did show that in spurts, they can compete with the best. The talent is there, they just have to stay healthy, and they have a few ifs and maybes on defence and in goal.
So, I'll put it this way:
1) Toronto *contingent on acquiring vet goalie, otherwise they slip down 3 spots
2) Edmonton
3) Montreal
4) Islanders
. . . . wait for it . . . .
5) Columbus

I voted Columbus why becuase at the end of next season if they finish out of the playoffs noone will remember this predictions, but if they do make the playoffs then I will remember this prediction and be able to say i was the only person on the face of the earth to predict this!
so Columbus for reasons stated above
Anybody with ability can play in the big leagues. But to be able to trick people year in and year out the way I did, I think that was a much greater feat.

This really is a great question and when i first looked at it i said to myself that i wouldn't be surprised to see 3 or 4 of them make it! However, that kind of turnover for non playoff teams to playoff teams is usually not that abundant! |

Yeah, I have to echo much of what Slozo said. As painful as that it. Let's not forget that the '12 version of the Leafs were comfortably in a playoff spot at the start of Feb. Without drubbing up horrible memories for some, they did have one of the worst collapses in the history of the NHL. Even without Luongo or a vet goalie, that team is good enough to at least make the playoffs.
The Oilers are going to have to improve a lot. Not because they are bad but because their division is strong. Defense is a question mark but not as much as some are saying. They are healthy going into a season for the first time in 5 years. They had some players emerging last year in Potter and Plante. Colton Tuebert is still waiting in the wings patiently, and Shultz and Smid are all the shutdown any team needs. If Whitney can find his form from 2 years ago before his foot injuries, the Oilers defense is fine. Not elite but not a problem.
Their issues is also goaltending.
I'm going out on a limb and saying both Edmonton and Toronto will make the playoffs. Perhaps Slozo and I can be so preoccupied with both of our teams success that we will have less time to focus on our verbal sparring??
