Poll Question:
Where will offensive superstar Ilya Kovalchuk of the Atlanta Thrashers end up at the 2010 trade deadline (or sooner!)

Choices:

Los Angeles Kings
New York Islanders
Boston Bruins
Calgary Flames
Philadelphia Flyers
New York Rangers
Chicago Blackhawks
Atlanta Thrashers
Other (who?)

I said L.A., which seems to not get alot of attention as an option. This is a franchise that has been out of the playoffs for a good while, and has a great young nucleus. With the likes of Kopitar, Doughty, Brown and the surprising Jonathan Quick, they can afford to part with some young prospects, a roster player and a draft pick or two to leap towards the next level. This is a franchise that needs to have some starpower and return to the playoffs.

Plus they can actually afford to take the cap hit that will come with a big contract that Ilya will be looking for. That, and LA's not the worst place in the world to live. Atlanta would probably prefer to deal Kovi out of the Eastern Conference as well.

My vote goes to Atlanta. Maybe i'm just hoping (i hate seeing team's lose their stars) but i also think that Atlanta's getting closer each year to having a shot at going somewhere. They're in the mix for the playoffs this year and without Ilya, they're nothing! Giving guys like Peverley, Bogosian, etc a little more time and they could be right in the mix!

They simply have to find a way to keep him because with his UFA status pending, the return won't be enough for this true superstar!

I agree I think he will stay in Atlanta, but if he moves out I also like the possibility for LA. You said many good points Hugh

NHL.com and TSN.ca are reporting that a Kovalchuk deal may be in the works and could be announced as soon as today!

Waddell has apparently spoken with Kovalchuk and told him to be prepared for a trade potentially in the next few hours??

It appears I am wrong. I would have bet my last $1 on Kovalchuk staying put but my good friend Slozo appears to have the inside track.

I gotta be right at least once against him this year, I think I might be ohfer against him. It hurts right here(pounding fist against chest)

I think Calgary...i seems to me that the Flames are gearing up to make an offer. They have tons of depth in the forward department now. No superstars, but lots of 2nd + 3rd line players which we all know are very important in the playoffs. I am Sutter here is my offer for Kovalchuck...

to Atlanta: Rene Bourque
Curtis Glencross
Nik Hagman
1st rounder

to Calgary: Iyla Kovalchuck
Colby Armstrong

And if I am Waddell, I am saying it's Kovalchuk only, not Armstrong as well and I need a defensemen on top of what you offered.

Well i hope he ends up in Boston. I could see Chirelli offering a package that could be:

To Boston Ilya Kovalchuk

To Atlanta David Krecji, Mark Stuart and Toronto's 1st rounder if the bruins can sign him. Boston's 1st rounder if they can't.

Wow, makes sense!! Specifically if TO finishes in the lottery, that deal could be Hall of Fowler.

However, I still don't think Boston has the cash for this. Stuart is a UFA at the end of the season and Krecji is $3.75 million. Boston has $44 million tied into $14 players, so if they sign Kovalchuk to the $10 million he wants, they have a TON of work to do to get below the cap.

I say LA has the inside track. Not only do they have the assests to make the trade, they have the cap space today. Kovalchuk and Kopitar with Quick coming into his own and a very young yet stable defensive group.

Kinda sounds like another version of Chicago, no??

To LA: Kovalchuk
To ATL: Frolov, J. Johnson, 2nd and 3rd round picks.

I think it will go like this.
To Edm Kovalchuk
To Atlanta Moreau, Staios,Souray, Cogs, Osullivan,Stortini,Smid, and that guy who always dresses in that green spandex suit in Van.
Note...we end up trading Penner and Hemsky for that guy.

First of all it is probably between LA or Atlanta
Chicago is already going to have budget problems as much as they want kovalchuk if they were going to get another player it would be a goalie not saying Niemi is bad but if they want a cup they need a consistent goalie as for Huet he is a piece of crap; so I could see a trade between Chicago and vancouver Versteeg and Bolland for Schnieder. If boston was to get him thought they would be crazy to trade Toronto's 1st pick because toronto is going to be 2nd last most likely with Edmonton in last. Team Canada should have Alex Burrows/Alex Sedin on their team. Edmonton should not trade for kovalchuk because he will Heatley on them forcing them to trade him; If i was Kovalchuk's agent i would say stay with atlanta, Atlanta has Antrapov who is really playing well so he has a good chance of making playoff's there. If Ilya went to LA he would have a problem playing on the second line unless Smyth was moved right wing.
Yes the Canucks rule and will probably end in 2nd in the league first in the west.

i could see LA. However J. Johnson won't be part of that deal. Doughty and johnson are there long term if they have any brains.
Frolov, Stoll + Brown. Atlanta's D is fine.

I don't think Johnson wants to be there long term, he and Dean Lombardi do not have a good relationship, and he hasn't been very good, he is a -16 on the season and is 1 of only 2 players who have played over 50 games this year and are in the minus.

This has been an exciting year for deals so far . . . and it looks like he's not going to be a Leaf (can't have that many deals, can we?) so, my bet is on Calgary or Boston or LA.

What scares me is Boston here, specifically that it could instantly provide them with everything they need "team-wise" and put them right up there with Washington and Pittsburgh as a powerhouse. Boston has two first round picks to deal out from the Leafs, and using both to get Kovalchuk (which would be huge for Atlanta's future) plus maybe a Krejci - like someone mentioned though, they would have serious financial finaggling to do first (say that 3 times fast). Hopefully the historical trend continues and they don't go after a big name like this (speaking as a Leaf fan) . . .

I said LA about a month ago, Boston has said they wont move torontos pick no matter what the cost, but I guess he could change his mind last minute.

I'll be shocked if it isnt LA.

There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E".

There are reports that Kovalchuk turned down the biggest deal ever offered to a UFA. I don't know the details but it sounds like he wants out of Atlanta. I really get the feeling that L.A. will be the team that aquires his services. Once they do...look out!!

Here is the link to the statement from Waddell:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=516230

Seriously, what's the deal with this?? Waddell is basically tipped his hand on what the offers were. This does two things. Firstly, it tells all 6 Thrasher fans that he did everything reasonable to keep Kovalchuk in the ATL. But, does this not also tip the teams interested in him at what they will have to offer for Mr. Kovalchuk's services??Could this be considered tampering?? I know that Kovalchuk's contract is property of Atlanta, but I don't recall any other statement like this for a player still under contract and not traded at this point.

This is fresh and new!!

On a side note, here's why I think the teams like Boston and Chicago are not going to be in the market. Waddell wants a lot for Kovalchuk considering the team that gets him this year could end up with nothing if Kovalchuk goes UFA. So it's nearly a forgone conclusion that the team that picks him up will also sign him long term. We have also noticed how difficult it is for teams to move contracts in the cap world. For that reasoning, I assume that the team who gets him has the cap room today. Every team is going to have thier share of RFA's and UFA's leaving and coming so that cash is going to be a wash in most cases.

For example, if Boston was to give up Wideman, another roster player like Ryder and the 2-1st round picks, they would drop $8 million in salary. Say you give Kovalchuk $10 million, you are +$2 million. Meaning they would have 13 players locked up for $46 million leaving around 8 million to sign 10 more players to get to just 23???

I like Kovalchuk and under different circumstances would love to have him play for the Rangers. But the guy is seeking a deal worth at least $10 million a year, in my opinion he's just not worth it, not in this salary cap era. Especially with it being such a long term deal. It's bound to cause problems down the road.

So much for my pick of Atl. Looks like he def wants outta there now! I'd say LA has the best to offer. They've got a lot of young studs and moving him outta the east might please the Thrashers as well?

I too agree that he's not worth 10 mill a year. I just wonder, what is a team gonna give up if he becomes a rental and tests the FA market regardless? That's why i could see LA waiting till after the season when they could then just sign him? However, i guess if a team like Boston or Philly were to step in and get him signed, he'd be gone.

This afternoon, the guy on TEAM1040 said the most likely teams in the mix right now are Philly, Boston, LA and NJ?

that's not a good match. the system they play in NJ and Kovalchuk's style of play would conflict large.

Well 4022, bring on the conflict. He's a Devil!

Funny how NJD didn't even make the poll and no one really mentioned them in this thread (didn't double check but don't recall them being mentioned).

Quite true. The deals of the past week have all been really off the wall in regards to there wasn't really any leaks or leads before the trades happened and the experts as much as us schleps didn't have a clue. New Jersey was never talked about at a potential for Kovachuk at any time that I can recall. Phaneuf to the Leafs wasn't on anyone's radar and Jokinen to the Rangers wasn't anywhere either.

The players getting trades is not a suprise, but the teams involved definately has been. Hopefully, if this keeps up, I can hope for a Horcoff for Getzlaf deal some time in the next week or so!!
