Thing is (I've worked in the comedy industry before) many smart people are in fact incredibly witty, but the problem is that they do not know how to say their idea in a funny way. Unfortunately with the new generation, one of the easiest ways to become funny fast is to throw a bunch of properly placed expletives into your work. |

Alex - let me start off by saying I like most of your posts, you add a lot to the discussions, and I enjoy your commentary usually. That being said, I was a little offended at one of your captions here.
The one about Latvians not having seen action for 60 years.
I am Latvian Canadian, and know the history well. Yes, it has been about 60 years since the end of the second world war when the soviet union killed off and deported to Siberia hundreds of thousands of Latvians. You might not know that the last guerrilla fighting left over from the second world war and soviet takeover was in Latvia, fought by the ultra-brave and patriotic Forest Brothers, who died fighting against impossible odds. They all died as free men, knowing that eventually they would be killed - but they died free.
What may have escaped your attention, is that since joining NATO, Latvia has representatives all over the world, currently having troops in Iraq and Afghanistan with coalition forces. On a per capita basis, reflective of their small population (2.3 million), Latvia currently has quite a few troops abroad, although 250 doesn't sound like a lot. On a more personal level, Latvians are not shy about fighting . . . just try making an offcolour remark about one to his face in a bar to check!
In short, I just ask that you try to be respectful of other nations and especially so when making casual remarks about war history or fighting prowess . . . and sorry for the lecture.

sigh....everyone's a critic....I guess if a 13 year doesn't find it funny, it must not be so...my apologies for posting the 'whole page' I just found and joined the site recently, thought the 'caption this picture' idea was pretty funny and thought I would give my 2 cents....wait a sec....I'm currently wearing underpants older than my critic....(no offence taken Datsyuk, and thanks BradTheBadDad for finding some of them amusing)
PS. Datsyuk, if you need background as to why I thought some of these were okay, let me know, I realize some the captions have references that pre-date Britney Spears.......lol....no offence. |
